Especially for SASLESS and those who understand. The country where helicopters rarely return from... a 180nm by 180nm death trap. More fun and games and a largely frustrating but seriously rewarding experience.

On most of the police helicopter photos where you see a pilot, it's me flying, complicated fleet, AS350B3, AS355F2 and N, Bell 206JR and L4, Bell 412, and I also fly an A109E. It's not too uncommon to fly 4 or 5 different types around here in a day.

Right! Those involved with good intentions, and an interest to develop a sound helicopter operation in Croatia worked their butts off to make this happen. What we did not consider was that we were mislead by a few persons on what the actual purpose was to establish the operation. I contributed to it by co-authoring a bloody JAR-Ops manual, apart from other activities, which kept me on my feet for 24/7/365.

Some folks quit their current jobs at that time because they, including myself, believed that this was a supreme concept. Just to find out later that our trust and loyalty have been abused, and sugar coated with all kind of bull****. And finally the sugar coated bull**** was what broke this concept's neck. That is the reason the helicopters got repo'd.

Not to mention that I had to chase them for my pay check. Enough said!!! I still could get temper tantrum when I think about it.

However, I must say that the conversion course, and the winch training was tops. Everything else was flops...

When I left the company, the BK 117 and the EC 145 still were parked outside in the grass in Lucko exposed to the weather elements.

Supposedly, the Croatian EC-145 (nowadays registered D-HDPP) might end up with the DRF Luftrettung in Regensburg (at least if the speculations on rth.info (http://www.rth.info/news/news.php?id=821) and helionline.de (http://forum.helionline.net/viewtopic.php?t=6321) are anything to go by).

I really like this thread - and some of the photos are staggeringly good. Lets keep them coming. Commonsense you mention. That is the good thing about this thread, full of commonsense, unlike a myriad other threads, where common sense seems to be overtaken by personal battles to gain oneupmanship - never mind the facts!! :)

Birddog,

Those shots are of what I know as "Roof Tops".....the landing of guys with guns on top of very small flat surfaces....usually done at night on NVG's putting just one skid or wheel on or just nearly on the surface. It can be good fun with some wind blowing and misty rain flying about. In the dark without any lights to help in seeing the wires and such.

and I found New Ray's 1/48 model a half year back. It looks a special detailed model comparing with their 365s. Unfortunately the model has been set in a flight condition only with a stand and the main landing gears have not been contained in this model though the nose gear is retractable and installed in the model. Anyway, for the price, I believe it has an excelent balance of value for money.

the quiz is easy.

There has been a recent announcement of massive infrastructure spending to revamp the OZ navy.

That there is the newest addition and flagship, the HMAS KIVIN KRUDD.

It is powered by two dynamic machines, built with someone elses money, which is usual for KRUDD, and they will work in opposition to each other when the ship cast off.

It will eventually wander aimlessly about driven by the wind (as he is, a hot wind) until it strikes an immovable object and then like the OZ eceonomy its great engines will disappear in a spectacular exhibition of diametric opposition.

The crew will all be saved, having done backflips, like their fearless leader, into the sh***y local creek.

Then the local care-flight will save them as all other reputable HEMS outfits have also gone down the local sh***y creek, I mean gurgler.

amen

Then the spin doctors will start.

Ringer,

The company was Specialist Helicopters, but were bought by PDG around three years back.

I was a groundhandler with them for four years, and have to say it was the best job i've had:ok:.I can't say enough about the skills these guys had/have in the lifting game, and i'll forever tip my cap to them:D.

PDG are the only players up here doing this kind of thing now,and probably lead the market at it nationwide too.

Kangia:

Nice shots Gordy.

Thanks---I cannot take credit, I was flying--The pictures were taken by our aviation safety officer Bob Barnes---who is also an amateur photographer.

I've always wondered this but is there a procedure they follow if the engine quits in the Long Ranger with the two guys roping down?

There are different procedures depending upon the severity of the problem. According to the "book", the spotter can signal the rappellers to speed up---OR, if the engine quits, he can cut their ropes.

We discuss the issues often and I have come to the conclusion that if the engine quits, I am going to nose over slightly to gain some speed, (depending upon height---we rappell anywhere up to 250 feet), the guys on the line will go down with the aircraft, which initially will be descending quite slowly. They will not hit the ground that hard. We train typically in open areas first, then putting them into tight areas. If they are rappelling to a tight area, they will be drug into a tree and can cut themselves free from the rope quickly, and then climb down.

You bring up a good discussion---some of us, by the very nature of the work we do, will rarely have a good spot to auto into. We also do not have the luxury of flying above 500 feet all the time---in fact I rarely fly above 300 feet. There was a manual produced by the US military many years ago called "How to crash a helicopter". It discussed how to crash and survive in those situations where you had no choice. Here is a link for the document.

How to crash a helicopter (http://fireheli.com/Files/howtocrashahelicopter.pdf)

My goal was always to put the guys on the ropes....or fixed line....down as gently as possible and make sure the aircraft did not fall on top of them. I accepted the fact the aircraft was going to be a write off but hopefully I could use it up in a manner that kept me as intact as possible.

When you have folks hanging under you.....you accept both a responsibility and liability as regard their safety and well being. In all of my helicopter flying....these were the times I most keenly felt the burden of doing things as perfect as possible. There seemed to be a heck of a lot of difference between carrying people inside the aircraft as compared to their being slung under you or rappelling down the rope. Rappelling generally went quickly and thus the exposure was not very long in duration but fixed roping/short haulling was an altogether thing. I had nightmares about dragging folks into something....or losing the entire line.

All of my rappelling and fixed line work was done in either Hueys or Chinooks so I had a lot of "aircraft" to use up if things went all wrong. Never worried about the Chinook as it had plenty of power but the old Huey being single engined posed an all together mindset.

The key was being ready to react should anything go even slightly wrong....delay could be a killer!

The importance of a very detailed brief for each flight...so everyone knew what to do....which way to run...or hide....and which way the aircraft would move went a long way in improving the chances for the guys on the ropes or on the ground.

Thank's Gordy,

that's very interesting reading. Your techniques sound sensible alright. Would be fun to try and practice with some weights. Not the same obviously but I've known a couple of guys who had engine failures with loads on long lines. After releasing the load 'late' in the auto they were always amazed at the lack of damage to the load.

Looks like nice flying.

SASless I can understand why the feeling of having someone hanging outside your single engine machine would be a fairly intence one. Not sure I'd like that at all. I've become too used to two engines and plenty of wind. And everyone in seats.

If I may offer a suggestion, slow your shutter speed down, preferably down to 125th of a second or slower. It gives the rotor blades some movement. Something just doesn't look right when the blades are frozen in flight. :ok:

Hi Blender Pilot, a few questions...

Is that the paramedic symbol on the engine cowls of the two Police helicopters?

And what does the G.D.F stand for on the nose?
I see the Squirrel was lucky enough to the registration XC-GDF.

Some nice paint jobs over there!

Hey Blender, My Wife and I happened to be Betty's instructors out in Fresno. It's mad that she's in the 135 and 412 already and I'm still in a Robbie! Ask her about her first solo x-country that turned into a night dual with me!! Funny stuff, although not so much at the time.

BlenderPilot
31st Jul 2009, 03:30
ChopperFAN,
Well the 119 feels like a tractor because the rotor isn't really smooth except when you are in cruise, if you are manuvering around on in approach it will make your teeth rattle!!!

Zhishengji751,
G.D.F. stands for Gobierno Distrito Federal (Federal District Govt. = Mexico City Police) and yes that is the paramedic symbol on the helicopter, traffic is really though in Mexico City and in many cases a 5 mile trip by ground could take an hour or more so we do a lot of medical evacuation flights, we just pretty much land anywhere around the city where you can fit a helicopter and transport the patient to an available hospital around the city, most within a 10 mile radius, but we do it in under 5 or 10 minutes, instead of an hour by ground, the MC police does on average about 3 flights of the kind every day.

darrenphughes,
Spoke to Betty about two hours ago, she laughed when I asked her about her x-country ;) She's doing really good fortunately, I keep on telling her she's doing great but she still demands perfection! She almost went from the R22 Fresno to the EC135 and she's doing really well. Last thursday we flew that black Koala you see in the photos for about 8 hours in one day, went from MC to Texas and back the same day for paperwork and it was fun for me, but Betty, being Betty, wanted to perfectly hover and fly the aircraft although she'd never flown it before! I would say she did better than most who fly it everyday, me and her have been up flying the 206L4 and the AS350B3 and she's always done great so I thing you guys are great instructors! ;)

Some of the contributors in these pages are really awesome.

More than once they remind me of previous greats, like Frank Hurley ( of the ill fated Shackelton expidition) or even Damien Parer (famed war photographer).
I suggest that some of you put together your efforts in saleable form that can be preserved by many of us and our age of the contempory helicopter design, at work, and maybe at play.

After all, many would have us believe that we are on the verge of moving way ahead of the efficiencies of the best of the fifties designs. Who knows?

A somewhat "normal" scene from the middle east or Africa...

Can anyone confirm that they normally glue their hats on in Mexico? (excess of 20 caps/hats still on the head while the Uh-60 lifts). Yes, I have taken off with big crowds around much smaller helicopters before and the crowds usually has dispersed quickly, not to mention all the hats and other loose items leaving the scene as soon as a little pitch is pulled.

Hello birrddog,
seems, that pictures hosted at the fotocommunity produce problems with pprune.
I rehosted the pictures and hope, that you can see them now.

Here are some more - Bell 206 in front of a new AIDA did the pleasure flights around that ship ;-)
http://www.uheeren.de/pprune/aidabell.jpg

and a police BK117 blowing away the middle markers of a smal UL-landing strip
(I replaced them later)
http://www.uheeren.de/pprune/wind.jpg

and a BK117 coming home at sunset

last but not least, an EC135 of the police of the city of Hamburg

A few pictures from a recent trip to Iquique in northern Chile. We were based at the foothills of the Atacama Desert, which is apparently the driest place on Earth. Having been there I understand why. The pictures of the desert don't really do the 'emptiness' of the place justice.

Some desert and a pitot tube.

I've just returned from a 4 week trip to Antarctica, flying an AS350B2 supporting the French at Dumont D'Urville. My first trip to the ice, and it was certainly eventful!

A few of the photos:

L'Astrolabe is the smallest ice breaker in use, and the evolution to get the Squirrels in and out of the hold has little margin for error!

http://gallery.me.com/johneacott/101843/DSCN5784/web.jpg

http://gallery.me.com/johneacott/101843/DSCN5785/web.jpg

We initially flew pax and supplies into DDU, but the ice was so thick this year that the distance from the ship was nearly 60nm, making for a lot of flying

http://gallery.me.com/johneacott/101843/DSCN5800/web.jpg

Lots and lots of icebergs, and vast distances with confusing perceptions of range. The ship's nearest iceberg was visual at 50nm from only 1000ft

http://gallery.me.com/johneacott/101843/DSCN5884/web.jpg

http://gallery.me.com/johneacott/102043/helico14/web.jpg

The thick ice kept us trapped for quite a while, we worried about getting out at one stage

http://gallery.me.com/johneacott/102043/astrolabe-on-ice-sm/web.jpg

http://gallery.me.com/johneacott/102043/helico15-sm/web.jpg

One session with 68kt winds and frozen sea spray we could have done without

http://gallery.me.com/johneacott/101929/DSCN6138/web.jpg

http://gallery.me.com/johneacott/101929/DSCN6153/web.jpg

But a fresh water blast with warm water, lots of WD40 and a long ground run got us going again

Funny how that many of us rusty rotorheads have tread long and rough paths from bank to bank to raise finance on things that fly, (or float) but still that are tangible, definable and officially registered on a national register, but now banks are eager to hand out spondoolicks by the bucket load on hot air.
