the market for 2nd user 738's being dead
Trust me, that is nonsense. How many decent 738s are out there for sale or lease right now? VERY few if any.

Now classics and jurassics - millions. But NGs? Rare.

FR

As per my post 3rd Jan FR will not use CWL as a base as ILS is CAT1. Mathew Berger FR route planning manager is on record (lo-cost airline conference 2007) that FR will only plan a base with a minimum of CAT2 ILS.

Caaardiff- I am afraid I do not share your unrealistic optimism although I would love to be proven wrong!

I do not know who are the mutitude of airlines operating from the airport when you say we should be thankful for the " majority of airlines that operate from there! "....I can count them all on one hand!!

frank murphy 7th January 2009 19:17

Do you have seven fingers?

Em0866 7th January 2009 23:35

At the current time, given the current economic climate, I cannot see an expansion or new airlines announcing they will be operating new flights from CWL this coming summer season. Remember people are watching what they are spending and are looking for cheaper holidays at home or avoiding the Eurozone given the weak pound against a strong Euro. It may be disappointing for supporters of the airport and the airport itself, but it is common sense. Maybe it'll be better later in the year and then hopefully it'll be better by S10

planenut321 10th January 2009 11:40

Nantes not operating for summer 09. Looks like it might be a quiet summer aswell.

3 in a row...

KLM gets the hat-trick ! Thurs/Fri and todays 10:15 (div to BRS) all cancelled. Anyone know the reason or is it the same old ''ageing fleet, waiting for new a/c'' ? Even the few flights that CWL have got ain't running=more disgruntled pax ?? We know where they'll be going, like last time this kept happening - BRS. Shame.

MerchantVenturer 10th January 2009 13:00

KLM

The Bristol Airport Apron website shows KL 1059 currently parked on stand 12 at BRS (F100, PH-OFB). It is shown as having arrived at 1126 today and has a scheduled departure time for AMS of 1500.

No idea why it landed at BRS. The corresponding mid-morning CityHopper from AMS to BRS landed as normal and returned to AMS per schedule, according to the BRS departures page.

WALES-TAG-TOP 10th January 2009 13:16

Booking site?

Are you able to book flights on cwlfly.com site again?
If BRS has cat3 ILS, why 2 diverts yesterday?

flyerboy 10th January 2009 14:08

PH-OFB landed on full emergency at BRS with hydraulic problem. We were told unable to land at CWL as they were giving rvr's.Busy for us after though as we had 12 aircraft in the hold.
Diversions yesterday were simply that aircraft unable to land with cat III need 300m for cat II or 700m for cat I and our rvr's were never that high

planenut321 10th January 2009 14:09

KLM suffered a hydrualic problem and diverted to BRS due to better visibility. Then it was canceled from Cardiff as for the 2 diverts the other day, OLT and RE, that too may have been due to better visibility at CWL.

Welsh Bobby 11th January 2009 10:23

Brs/cwl

I think Watabench's post on the BRS thread sums up well the drastic contrast in the prosperity of the two airports. If I was part of the senior management team at CWL,I would be asking myself some serious questions?!...Or perhaps they too are working for BRS in not providing any competition!!
A sorry and pathetic state of affairs for us at CWL!

WELSHGUY40 11th January 2009 10:59

cwl

i agree with you its just sad case for cwl there going down hill fast routes dropping like flys the airport dead now in the winter and summer now but all other airports are still getting new routes more based aircraft still with the credit crunch so why not cwl not one very sad i like to know what they do at these meeting in cwl just sit back drinking tea watching it go down hill :ugh:

CabinCrewe 11th January 2009 11:23

To be honest there are very few otherairports getting lots of new routes. Their totals are down even with new additions. CWL is not the only one...

Welsh Bobby 11th January 2009 11:30

Cabincrewe- you are missing the point.
We are comparing CWL's fortunes (or lack ot it) with BRS.Two very different stories even under the present financial climate.
BRS is now THE airport serving the Welsh public!

pipertommy 11th January 2009 19:54

We do always compare BRS and CWL, but I think they are in two different levels to each other. One is ran well the other not so.
The pax figures also are completely different, Cardiff is like Exeter, Coventry... type airport-not much happening.
It will take years to close the gap.
You would think the WAG would be disapointed and ashamed.
Example, they bang on about the meetings they have and promotions in New York, quite alot, you cant even get there from Wales so whats the point? Giving more business to yes ... Bristol.

mustrum_ridcully 12th January 2009 13:02

Forget NY the WAG can't even get to Brussels, pretty poor considering Wales got/gets £££ EU Objective 1 money.

Unfortunately BRS is in a different league now (to think 10 years ago they were pretty much the same) and that's not going to change until the economy improves and the next boom period gets going. The best CWL can really hope for is that routes aren't lost, they just need to ensure that they put themselves in a position to benefit from the next boom - as I bet BRS will be.

HZ123 12th January 2009 16:16

Don't dispair even the mighty LHR is quieter than it has been for many years. Since T5 and T3 was refurbed the other 3 are ghost towns for most of the day. Without people you can see immediately the dirt and decay. How many people are in the catchment area for CWL?

Em0866 12th January 2009 21:22

Further to pipertommy's comments, here is my opinion

I think the main problem is that we shouldn't compare Bristol with Cardiff anymore. Both airports are in different leagues. Like it or not Bristol does have the edge.

One of the main reasons for this is that Cardiff's catchment area comes of roughly 2 million people. Bristol on the other hand has a catchement area of roughly 4 million people, the majority of whom have an average GDP much higher than the average in Wales. This means that the Bristol market is not only larger in size, but more productive in terms of higher prosperity of that population to fly.

The economics speaks for itself. The higher the catchement area the more choice/services you're gonna get

mrgittins 12th January 2009 22:24

Customer base...

Em, the numbers of Welsh pax through BRS is high though. This says to me that choice of routes, times etc is too limited at CWL thus the seepage over the bridge. Anyone got any figures re this ? The obvious history of CWL and FR et al will take a lot of the blame for this along with current climate but many contributors to this site are obviously fed up with the situation and look forward to bridge building the other way, ie, back to at Rhoose.
