There was heavy rain and crosswinds at Bristol, two diverted with a possibility of more but the winds then calmed. Both aircraft positioned back to BRS after less than 1 hour on the ground but not sure if the passengers were remaining on board.

rossym 4th February 2008 19:25

The diverts were G-EZBO (EZY6032 from Madrid) and G-EZBM (EZY6222 from Paris CDG). :8

Alpha has lost another catering contract, BmiBaby has gone over to LSG.

Is it only KLM that still use them (and that is only to store their catering overnight). I heard that they transport catering down to BRS is that correct?

boyyo 7th February 2008 09:31

This is correct, LSG now cater everything except KLM, i don't know what is happening come May 1st though.

nesboy 1976 7th February 2008 10:41

Why whats happening on May 1st?

4 engines 4 longhaul 7th February 2008 12:20

start of Summer timetable for the majority of carriers, i.e a big increase in rotations!

nesboy 1976 7th February 2008 12:26

Surely though, the extra increase in rotations won't give Alpha anymore business as the airlines in question have already got a catering contract sorted elsewhere?

I assme boyyo is reffering to LSG Skychefs, rather than Alpha

boyyo 7th February 2008 16:07

At the moment Alpha only have KLM, but i was told LSG are looking into taking this on, aswell as looking into Thomas Cook.

mathers_wales_uk 7th February 2008 17:03

Don't shoot the messenger, but i heard today that the airport as issued a warning to BmiBaby that if they don't invest further this summer, they will allow the likes of easyjet etc in to the airport.

I wonder how the airport can do this, and i wonder if easyjet are actually looking at coming into Cardiff.

Looking forward to your opinions.

Hi, this is my first posting.

I think that bmibaby have not expanded as much as they should have, compared to BHX, so a little bit of competition might kick them into gear. Mind you, that could backfire with bmibaby pulling out of CWL completely. With easyjet just down the road at BRS I don't know if they'd want to fly from another airport so close. Will be interesting to see what happens

4 engines 4 longhaul 7th February 2008 20:09

I seriously doubt easy, in fact I can pretty much believe they will never launch ops from CWL, now ryanair could again be a glimmer of possibility but only to complimenet BRS services, i.e dare I say it a few more bucket and spades from CWl whilst BRS focuses on Business pax etc, but then again why would they set up so close to BRS, now I know BHX and EMA for example are fairly large bases close to each but lets be honest its a different catchment size completely and giving that fact do you really think to lcc co co-eexist within 45miles of each given one-anothers catchment area.

Maybe WW will expand this summer who knows they have said they will be announcing more routes, Or more likely is our new found glory FlyBe, it's a pity about TOM though, i've noticed an ever decreasing route network from cardiff since the merger:rolleyes:

CheekyVisual 8th February 2008 12:41

Don't kid yourselves. Airport management don't protect anyone. If EASY or Ryanair pitches up tomorrow saying "can we open a base" the answer would be "yes how little do you want to pay?" not "sorry we have to protect bmibaby they've been good to us". There is no hoard of airlines beating on the doors waiting to be let in. I wish there was I might be able to get a job there !

The truth is if they were at all interested they'd be there. The bean counters know that CWL is a marginal airport for yield. Not a good thing at this point in the aviation economic cycle. Please don't get me to explain the whole yield thing again ! No matter how good the management of the airport is they can't expand the catchment area by 2 million people ! Airlines are not charitable institutions for plane spotters and wishful thinkers. At the moment even the best routes from STN, LTN, BHX, BR and MAN are struggling to break even. If you want evidence look at Ryanair's profits and they make little or no money actually flying passengers !

Please no one make the arguement that the airlines are totally short sighted and the airport management are useless unless you've done more than stand on the roof taking numbers (oh you can't do that any more can you).

First Warsaw flight today, what was the pax load like?

mathers_wales_uk 11th February 2008 15:25

Over 100 pax on the warsaw each way, not sure of the exact load as wasn't in work today. I hope the GDN loads will pick up in the summer when they will attempt to launch it for the 2nd time.

Very impressed that the news on the airport website is being kept up to date once again, hope this will continue.

pipertommy 11th February 2008 17:01

Cheers Mathers!Good to see the initial demand is there for another new route:ok:

Wellington Bomber 12th February 2008 15:12

Airlines prepare for Cardiff Airport battle

11.02.08
The expansion of services by flybe at Cardiff Airport from March 30 will see competition on a number of key domestic routes. It will compete with bmibaby to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast and Jersey and with Eastern Airways to Newcastle. There will be variations in service levels between the three carriers with different types of aircraft being used and the frequency of service varying from route to route, but there will be real competition on the routes for the first time.
bmibaby will fly to Edinburgh twice every weekday and Sunday and once on Saturday, to Glasgow once daily, to Belfast International once daily and to Jersey on Tuesday and Saturday. Flybe will fly to Edinburgh three times every weekday and twice on Sundays and once on Saturdays, to Glasgow twice on weekdays and once a day at weekends, to Belfast City twice on weekdays and once a day at weekends, to Newcastle once a day and to Jersey on Monday, Friday and Saturday. Eastern Airways has responded to the competition by announcing a three times every weekday service to Newcastle.
bmibaby uses a Boeing 737 jet, flybe a Bombardier Q400 turboprop that is about half the size of the Boeing and is very fuel efficient and Eastern Airways uses an even smaller Jetstream 41 turboprop. The cruising speed of the turboprops is slightly slower than the jet but for these short flights there is virtually no difference in journey times.
It may seem odd that, with other routes that could be developed out of Cardiff Airport, it now has this level of competition on existing routes. However, domestic routes are very lucrative for the airlines with their short flight lengths and ease of marketing. With the expansion of low cost airlines, there are now fewer domestic opportunities left and airlines are trying to consolidate any opportunities available to them.
The airlines with the highest frequency on routes will be more attractive to business passengers, giving an advantage to flybe on the Edinburgh and Glasgow routes. Eastern Airways will pick up the business travellers to Newcastle until flybe goes to a double daily service, at which point it will make it difficult for a small company like Eastern to compete.
If flybe captures the lucrative business traffic, the reaction of bmibaby is uncertain. For the passenger this will be a good year to travel on these routes as the airlines compete for market share. Six years ago passengers were paying BA more than £400 to fly from Cardiff to Edinburgh. Now there are fares available for £50 return including taxes.

birdscarer 13th February 2008 15:54

"Bye bye Baby, Ba-by......good Byyyyye!" (IMO). Eastern may be first to go though being a smaller operation and doing well out of Gloucester.
Guys - the Flybe empire has arrived.....
