Yes MrG, yes you are right, but it's because of the number in the catchment area of BRS which attracts us (and by "us" includes me I'm ashamed to admit) over the bridge. I agree with you that the choice of routes is limited on this side of the Severn, but until "them upstairs" at CWL pull their fingers out, it's going to carry on that way. I do think eventually that these people will come back once the routes (old and new) will come back to CWL, but I don't think it'll be this year. I really do support CWL but I do get frustrated with the way things are at the moment

Dragon tracker 13th January 2009 07:44

what is it you think the management are not doing?

You all seem to lay the blame squarely at the foot of CWL management and not the airlines.

what is it that you know they are not doing?

Welsh Bobby 13th January 2009 08:52

Dragon Tracker- quite simply not attracting/securing airlines through appropriate incentives!
Read through the threads and you will see the pattern of lost opportunities and poor management....FR to mention just one!
There are so many of us crossing the bridge for the variety and times offered at BRS.

caaardiff 13th January 2009 09:24

Its all well and good saying there's so many Welsh going over the bridge. But, is it enough to actually fill an aircraft from CWL?
BRS is attracting from this side of the severn. But i cant imgaine that 70% or more of them are actually Welsh. Which means CWL needs to attract more people from England to fill those aircraft part full with Welsh punters. Which isn't going to happen coz of the choice of routes already available from BRS.

In my personal opinion, i see alot of people from the Southwest going on the CWL charters. Even though there's probably more choice from BRS.
CWL should encourage the charter operators to expand. Lo-cost is dominated by Ezy and slow expansion by FR at BRS. Charter pax tend to spend longer in the airport, resulting in more revenue for retail, and maybe retail expansion within the terminal.
Baby at CWL, for whatever reason, have chosen not to expand. Maybe they are being over cautious, whereas EZY or FR have to power to risk expansion. But if FR do come back in and start operating to sun destinations, as thats what seems to work at CWL, they may just scare Baby off and start throwing their weight around again.

CWL v BRS

It seems that some of you are living in a world I 'once' inhabited, when I was 17, I dreamed of the amount of flights that could be operated from CWL, and at the time I was a regular spotter there and part of the aircraft museum team.

However, wake up and read the headlines gentlemen, we are in a RECESSION, no airline manager worth his salt would risk his company on the 'off chance' that certain routes 'might' prove succesful in a few years.

Bristol was extremely lucky when GO decided on it as it's additional base, and yes the airport management were proactive in chasing other airlines on the back of it. Get over it and live with it . At least BRS is closer than LHR.

But do you honestly believe in todays economic climate that Continental would start operating from Bristol given what's happening?

Besides just think what an airline executive must think when despite all this constant whining about lack of routes, the W.A.G. puts back the road improvements AGAIN. :D:D

WAG

Right, I've been reading these posts with interest, but I'm going to show my ignorance. What is WAG? I thought it was "wives and girlfriends" of famous footballers until a post suggested they would rather go to Brussels than New York.

Let me complete your education, Welsh Assembly Government.

johnnychips 14th January 2009 00:06

Thanks. It's easy, and blindingly obvious, once you know the answer

When we really want to confuse you we write it in Welsh 'Llywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru'

ryanair

brs gets 12 new routes and two more based aircraft not looking good for us :ugh:

mrgittins 14th January 2009 13:28

FR...

I suppose it shows that the recession is being bucked at least by FR.
The CWL ''red hot'' news shows tie up with KLM to Canada, ad says 4 outbound a day to AMS (not at present? - when ). This barring tecs/cancellations etc etc - hope trading standards are watching:(.

WELSHGUY40 14th January 2009 13:41

cwl

yes i agree and we could do with better hot new,s then that had no new routes no based aircraft at cwl just losing routes and aircraft you cant fly into cwl or fly out its very sad :ugh:

Welsh Bobby 14th January 2009 16:05

The FR news at BRS just reinforces what we have been saying about CWL's continuing demise and now surely even the unrealstic ompimists can surely see it!? The 'breaking news' about Canada routes via AMS is farcical!:ugh:

Em0866 14th January 2009 16:24

Interesting that FR have announced those new flights from BRS, given the current economic climate, maybe a bit risky perhaps? Who knows. I wonder how management at CWL are taking this? Do they have a strategy plan? Will this mean more people will be tempted from this side of the bridge to the other. Time will tell

Welsh Bobby 14th January 2009 16:27

'Will this mean more people will be tempted from this side of the bridge to the other. Time will tell '

Its already happening!!

cyfarthfa 14th January 2009 16:55

If you live on the eastern side of Cardiff, and especially Newport and Monmouthshire where many of our upwardly mobile folk live, its almost as quick to get to BRS as it is to CWL. Having said that, Ive just moved to west Wales and journey time to CWL is one hour forty five mins. if no hold ups.By the time it takes to get from the M4 to CWL I can be on the Severn bridge heading in to Bristol. I just glad that there is now a real regional choice of routes without having to use the London airports.

Em0866 14th January 2009 17:01

Welsh Bobby. I was asking the question on MORE people than already are heading the other side of the bridge. Not a dig, just pointing out that with the expansion will mean a bigger numbers will be heading over

WALES-TAG-TOP 14th January 2009 17:22

BRS Capacity

With these new routes/ flights launched, has BRS got the room for any more?
The rapid drop off is not really that rapid, its always busy, is there enough car park space on site/ check in/ departure space?
Is it becoming too big, too quick?

mrgittins 14th January 2009 17:41

Getting to BRS

I agree that the capacity front of house at BRS is getting very squeezed and maybe that'll lead to saturation. The M4 to BRS is generally good but it becomes so scenic as you amble through places like Barrow Gurney whilst giving way to horse riders and flocks of sheep.... airport link decision being delayed is another hammer blow to CWL that would help but is being missed and gives advantage to BRS but for how much longer due to these issues ??

Em0866 14th January 2009 20:54

I hear what you are saying MrG, driving to BRS is not too dissimilar to going to CWL, only difference being fewer roundabouts and fewer sheep LOL

The decision on the airport link road being delayed is very frustrating. Whichever route they eventually go for will come up with opposition from people who will be living near it. Yes they should have done it years ago but they didn't have the foresight or didn't think it was worth it.

As for BRS with being squeezed at front of house, well the airport there will have to think of something.
