Cost, going up North

Tryed WW/FLYBE for EDI for end of Jan, they even charge for an infant, £15 for no seat?
EZY are over £35/£40 cheaper for same trip!
Tax, surcharges, etc,etc.
Tempted to go over the bridge.

ABZ plus AMS still top on 19% in the survey, Germany not far behind.
The Coldra J24 is the mid-point between CWL/BRS, perhaps we are losing a lot of NP area as well?

LHR and CWL...

Did anyone hear Hodgetts on Real Radio news today moaning about the fact that the LHR 3rd runway has got the go ahead and that CWL could easily have taken slack up by doubling its throughput, along with some others, thus making the expansion unneccesary ? Several of us nearly choked on our tea as we were waiting the 2 hours between flights as we couldn't believe what was being said. The only flying we seem to be attracting lately is of the seagull variety - come on ! :ugh:

Actually to be fair they could. A direct route from the motorway or a direct link to a main line railway that ran regularly and it would be amazing what could be achieved. A simple extension to the runway the installation of Cat 2 and 3 ( yes yes I know about the terrain) and bobs your uncle you could have a genuine transatlantic airport.
Cardiff is about 2 hours from the outskirts of London it is on the Atlantic routes so why the heck hasn't somebody grabbed bull by horns and done something about it, it would need new terminal buildings well a total overhaul but I have been surprised over the years that no one has ever done anything to move that idea forward.
Before anyone pops up and says people if you provide the flights and the means to get to them people will fly. I travel to Heathrow Gatwick etc to catch flights and trust me I don't want to go there so if somewhere was easily accessible and you gave them the flights at the right price people will come.
But as ever with Cardiff it is a pipe dream :oh:

Sounds great on here, but the cost must be huge!
And there's no guarantee the airlines would come in. Might as well just start over.
Build the proposed Severn Estuary airport and uncle bob may appear!
Good location, accessible to South Wales / South West / Midlands even as far as Swindon/Reading. You can get your high speed rail links to North/South/East and West. Right by M4, road link already in place. Chance to create new layouts/terminals whether lo-cost style or transatlantic widebody style.
....We can but dream....

And.......
We'd save a couple of pages on the CWL forum carrying on the repetitive comparisons between CWL and BRS!

Regional airports

At least three other airports are within two hours of London that could take the biggest planes: DSA, EMA, BHX and perhaps there are others. But people do want to fly into London as a destination; there is a massive outward market from London and the SE; and then there are all the transfer passengers.Same reason why Manchester never won the Olympics but ended up with the Commonwealth games.

Cant Believe the Canada(Globespan) route is cancelled, slippery slow and going down fast!

Why can't you believe it? just read any Globespam thread or read customer feed back on Skytrax.

They have canned MME & ABZ already this year (09) and with Ryanair increasing at EDI will feel more pain to come, more and more they are becoming a wet lease operation with the odd MOD contract. The reduction in pax numbers this year will hurt like hell and whilst oil might be cheaper the exchange rate makes flying to Europe for your hols an expensive trip.

stalling attitude 16th January 2009 09:01

The truth is that most of the airlines that serve Gatwick would prefer to use Heathrow. Look how many US carriers moved up the road to LHR as soon as they could. If carriers use Gatwick begrudgingly then they sure as hell aint gonna use CWL as a second choice, sadly

pipertommy 16th January 2009 11:51

Yes I can believe it, just a record for Cardiff normally takes six months for a new airline to pull out:ugh:Thanks Facelookbovvered for that input. I mean that the airport has geared up for CAT 8 movements over the last couple of years now it appears we wont have any 767`s ect:)

INKJET 16th January 2009 14:03

At least baby are still there, whilst they not grown as some would wish they are still around, up at MME they were up in arms when baby pulled out followed by comments by DTV & MME saying they were glad to see the back of baby when Globespan arrived.

In my view airport expansion over the last few years has been a bit like the property boom, in part driven by equity release from soaring house prices. The next two years will be very lean, even Ryanair are feeling it, they will be glad they moved to proper airports like EMA/BHX/EDI but their cost base must be rocketing.

CWL needs to focus on what it can do to keep what its got, if you get Ryanair it would be a few units at most, but you'd probably see baby move its units back to the Midlands and Manchester, take a leaf out of what Leeds are doing, simply replacing Jet2 flights with Ryanair is not a way forward

cyfarthfa 16th January 2009 15:28

The news that Ryanair are introducing 12 new routes from BRS must be very worrying for the management at CWL. There were rumour on this thread that these routes were coming to CWL. My guess is that it was nothing more than a ploy by M.Oleary to squeeze a better deal out of BRS. I agree with the previous writer, management must do all it can to hang on to what it has got. How secure Baby will be once Lufty takes it over is anybodys quess. FlyBe are in no hurry to expand and what chance there is of that which cannot be named ever getting airborne?
The fact is that success breeds success and at the moment BRS seems to be having it all.

interested penguin 17th January 2009 19:43

completely agree with you

WELSHGUY40 17th January 2009 20:20

i think will will end up back too seeing j41s soon back in cardiff the way things are going everything going to brs and we had nothing for ages not one bit of good news and on weds there only one flight from baby thats all :ugh:

mathers_wales_uk 17th January 2009 21:12

looking at the website i can work out 4 Baby flights departing within 2 hours of each other approx every week day. Looks like theres a 4th aircraft on a W pattern (Step in the right direction)

iflycwl 18th January 2009 12:20

Let's face it CWL need to do a deal with Ryan Air - get them into CWL on some sort of deal and then you will see the difference.........some nice new European destinations would go down a treat. Gerona, Rome, some Polish destinations. They have the know on what to do so get the ball rolling !!!

BMI Baby have come to a practical standstill, bye bye LIS hello MAH - whoppee, Flybe seem to be happy with what they have - mind have heard NQY is next for them at CWL with Logan Air's Saab 340's. Thomson are zzzzzzz - it only seems to be Thomas Cook showing some sort of interest, mind you they have dropped x1 PMI for AYT and LPA for BJV but have also added an additional DLM on a Monday with an A320.

Summer 2009 has to be the worst expected summer by far unless we see the Marketing Management pull something great out from their hats !!!!

No long haul flights - we have lost CUN, POP, SFB, YYZ & YVR......simply a sad statistic. Even the rugby flights look awful this year with only Monarch's A321 operating to / from EDI for the Scotland game, which I know is the quietest - lets hope some more interest is shown for the Rome game in March.

boyyo 18th January 2009 13:27

summer 09

Also heard that there will be no Onur Air flights this summer......have to agree that in the 12 years i've been here, from the programme i got, it looks set to be the worst summer yet, also heard from someone that Air Lingus are looking at the possibilty of starting up routes(what, where ,when i don't know) but surely this is something possitive.
Whats happening with the departure lounge above stand 1? this has been vacant for a long time now.
Going back a while, Thomson extended there crew room into the old FCA offices, surely if they were not planning on expanding then they would have given that crew room up because the rent would have doubled, like i said some threads back, crew on TOM were saying that they were told 2010 is going to be TOM year with regards to expanding at CWL.(fingers crossed).
Anyone else heard of the Air Lingus rumour???

Welsh Bobby 18th January 2009 14:04

I wouldnt hold my breath on TOM - blow hot and cold.... do you remember the rumour on here last year that they saw CWL as a major base with maintenance facilities etc.?!! Now we will be lucky to have two based aircraft S09 and only one W09/10!! That extra 752 from BRS was shortlived!
What about TCX -anyone know their plans at CWL? Is it just the one A321 based S09? Is there anything additional even on a W pattern bearing in mind BRS will have 2 based and possible 3 according to rumours there?
Does winter 09/10 show them doing more?

britannialad 18th January 2009 16:26

Tom Expansion

It isnt going to happen, totally agree with welsh bobby they blow hot and cold. The potential is there alright! But with the severe route cuts for this summer another carrier could easily come in and pick up the trade. My Question is why dont the management see it. Or do they? Recently did a trip out of CWL the crew room is huge. They did see CWL as a major base nearly all flights were full this summer. Money wasting is huge also, positioning crew all over the country.... When there is no need.... checking CWL crew out on the 767 and they dont even operate there own long haul flights. Instead they are taxied over to BRS to operate ski flights, whilst the poor TOM BRS crew are sat at home. Somebody needs to tackle all these problems and im sure they could make some money instead of wasting it.... OPEN YOUR EYES TOM Management the potential is there!

WELSHGUY40 18th January 2009 16:56

Air Lingus

why would air lingus want to start up in cwl ive not heard any rumours they are and what routes would they do

planenut321 18th January 2009 17:31

With Aer Lingus, I think the problem would be that they are not lo-co so it may be a risky venture. Lo-cos have always done well at CWL such as WW, BE and TOM (I know currently it doesn't look it, but think....they are still here) But if Aer Lingus did i.e. follow in Gatwick's footsteps, then I could see many more irish routes such as Belfast, Cork, Dublin and Shannon all being possiblities even with high competion. Also route in Europe such as Rome, Milan, Hamburg, Berlin, Oslo, Zurich, Vienna and Malta all being on the cards. Remember Cardiff is not the only airport having problems this year, at least we are not a Coventry (no offence). But give Cardiff and the airlines 2009 to get back up on their feet and they will tackle 2010 full force :ok:

Also with the cutting of routes..... look at the positive.....they are still here!
