We are back to the topic that will always crop up when discussing Humberside International Airport, "CATCHMENT" Area, it does'nt have one large enough to either attract operators or make routes profitable unless your charging high costs.
HUY cannot compete with other regional airports, take Exeter, regional airport but has regional and european routes......then have a look at other regional airports and the answer is......HUY is im afraid in the wrong location Not doom and gloom though........theres always the charters and police helicopter and not forgetting the fish flights......I'll get my coat NikNak - agree with many of your points, concise and to the point! |
My poor little brain is now competely addled!
Here we have an airline that charges £200-£300 to ABZ, might be the reason why they do not do more routes suitable for the 'great unwashed'. I find it extremely difficult to equate a 500 mile flight compared to a 1500 mile flight at half the price (say £200 return to Austria with the flag carrier) but am not niave enough to not understand 'economies of scale'. We the 'average traveller' would find it hard to justify flying to London at such a price, when travelling by car costs about £60 and parking at about £25 per day. (London return at about £145 would be reasonable on an advance booking-competes with 1st class rail fare bought on the day) I know the BA route from MAN is costly, but it is a 73 and sometimes a 75 plus if you book in advance the price IS cheaper than the 'headline rate' also the off-paek fare is a lot different (bought a fare on the day MAN-LGW return £160 +tax -out on Sunday afternoon, back on Thursday evening), not so with Eastern. (Not suggesting Eastern start offering flights at half a Euro, but on wonders how long these ticket prices will be sustainable). Will be interesting to see what happens at NWI with FlyBe doing ABZ as well. (are they lining up Eastern for a head to head.) :uhoh: |
How do you define a catchment area though? I do agree that maybe we dont stand a chance of low cost now but i would not rule it out completely.
Hopefuly though, excel may be able to base an a/c at HUY year round and offer a higher frequency to ALC,AGP and PMI. DSA will do a good job (Ihope) of supplying the low cost flights but i would much rather use HUY for the conveniance if not because i can get cheaper tickets to ALC than i can from DSA! |
Eastern picked a niche market and HUY to ABZ is an oil business route, that is why a ticket costs so much. However KLM also charge over £300 for a business return to AMS, if you need to go on short notice the price will be high if you follow general corporate business practice and let your travel agent book you on a full business fare. The so called privileges of a full fare ticket don't always work. I remember changing to an earlier flight cos i had finished my business early and arrived at Schipol to find i was actually on standbye and not confirmed cos the flight was full. I managed to get on the flight and found myself sat next to a guy in a shell suit coming home from Miami, he had paid £275 for a return and I had paid £330 for a HUY to AMS return.I decided to plan my travel better after that and never pay full fare as a first option.

What was it Fred Ohlsen used to say on those 1970's holiday ad's.
"Remember...book early" :ok: Anyone see the ad in the ScunnyT. There is a tender for buiding a Perishables Hub (whatever that is) at the airport. What's that all about? anyone know anything?? |
They are trying to get more freight flights into the airport, and where better when its near the 'food town of europe'?
Think in that one HUY win hands down. Its all on the North Lincs Website, search humberside airport and it wil bring it up. Tender: Humberside Airport Perishables Hub - closing 19 September 2005 The council is inviting expressions of interest for a partnership arrangement. This is to operate and manage a new perishables hub cold storage facility at Humberside Airport. The new facility will provide approximately 10,000 sq. ft of storage space. It will include chilled facilities for perishable goods. We will select the operator before appointing building contractors. They will have an input into the overall specification and design from the beginning. Humberside Airport sees approximately 55 tonnes of fish imported each week. With additional general cargo, the airport expects a throughput in 2005 of between 2,500 - 3,000 tonnes. With additional flights to other destinations, it expects this to rise to approximately 4,000 tonnes in 2006. Longer-term growth in the fresh fish markets is forecast. Realistic targets of 9,000 tonnes are predicted for Humberside Airport by 2020. With the anticipated market growth, this proposal has the potential for significant business opportunities for experienced operators. Contracts are expected to start on 7 October 2005. Further information will be provided in the Invitation to Tender. Expressions of Interest should be submitted in writing to: Val Porteous Senior Regeneration Officer North Lincolnshire Council PO Box 42 Church Square House Church Square Scunthorpe North Lincolnshire DN15 6XQ Tel: 01724 297331 Fax: 01724 297500 Email: [email protected]. The closing date for the receipt of completed tenders is 19 September 2005. A Contract Notice was issued on 28 July 2005 for publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU). This is in accordance with The Public Services Contracts Regulations 1993 (Open Procedure). September 2005 |
Anyone got any ida where this new perishables hub might be placed? I was thinking maybe on the opposite side of the runway?
|
Maybe it is the big green hangar?!!!!!
;) |
Whats happening with that hangar anyway? Nothing seems to be going on!
Maybe we will see the perishables hub on the business park. Incidentaly, what will happen if HUY where to see pax expansion? Surely the terminal could not cope with many more pax than it currently handles, and there is very little space in the terminal area to expand onto! If anyone has seen the plans for HUY please post here! |
For the terminal they could expand into the helicopter terminal and relocate that elsewhere. Would make a nice termonal for Eastern and any other regional aircraft. Also they could expand towards car park 1, make car park 2 short stay and build a new long stay car park at the business park
|
That would be a lot of money for little gain, better to expand along the grass area between the restaurant and Scotia's hangar. 2 storeys of modern build would look cool and a huge drop-off area to the front.
New car park on the Business Park, there is a hotel going there, I have seen the sign on the entrance!!! Seriously though, they have to do something to get ready for expansion with XL etc :ok: |
That would be a lot of money for little gain, better to expand along the grass area between the restaurant and Scotia's hangar. 2 storeys of modern build would look cool and a huge drop-off area to the front. Rebuild the current departure lounge into a large modern arrivals area! The current check in area as a large 2 story departure lounge with half of the ground floor as a shopping area landside! with the obvious car rental desks too! It could happen if we get more traffic because the place is crammed when there are a couple of 737's on the ground! AIRPORT LOOKING TO LAND BIG FISH 12:30 - 08 August 2005 Operation Pilot Fish at Humberside International Airport could be about to boost the economy of North Lincolnshire. Under the operation, the tonnage of fish and other fresh food flown in and out of the Kirmington airfield every week could be trebled. And North Lincolnshire Council is currently looking for a partner to operate and manage a perishables cold store to hold mainly fish at Humberside Airport. Currently 55 tonnes of fish are imported into the airport each week - but the proposed development would allow a surge in exports from North Lincolnshire. Researchers reckon the export figure could be stepped up to 9,000 tonnes a year by 2020 to keep up with long-term growth from consumers in the rest of Britain. The proposed hub would provide about 10,000 square feet of cold storage space, including chilled facilities for perishable goods. Coun Liz Redfern, deputy leader of North Lincolnshire Council, explained with consumers demanding higher quality goods, ensuring fruit, vegetables, fish and other perishables arriving at the airport as fresh as possible was a real priority. "The hub would help companies meet this challenge," she said. "The cold store could provide a boost not only at Kirmington, but also to the wider North Lincolnshire economy." Coun Redfern said the facility would increase the flexibility of handling and storage of perishable freight. The freshness of the fish, both imported and exported, would also be improved, potentially giving importers or retailers an extension on the shelf life of their products. The Humber Trade Zone has been asked to secure funding for the airport project from Yorkshire Forward and the European Region Development Fund. Humberside Airport would provide the site for the new hub, with North Lincolnshire Council paying the ground lease and the chosen partner paying the rent. A council spokesman said the actual development of the facility was likely to start next year subject to the response from potential funders. The authority added it was seeking a minimum lease commitment of five years and the business could be enhanced or expanded to meet market growth. |
Wahhey there Andy!!!, sudden thoughts like that make Humberside Airport jump and break into a sweat!!!
One thing at a time, just the two storey extension with the large retail area on the ground floor would be brill, especially if they get an Austin Reed maybe just a Costa Coffee, a decent brew would be whizz! The article suggests a tripling of fish imports, that would mean a flight a night at least plus based aircraft in 2006, Tunisia and more to come maybe HUY is going 24hour. (Hope Jack Bauer does not find out!) :ok: |
We can dream......
Just hope it becomes a reality! There was a news article a couple of years ago that said HUY were trying to add at least three new routes a year! Maybe they do it in spurts and concentrate on one thing at a time! Charter (XL) Freight(New perishables Hub) Next stop? Scheduled.... Oh no have i sparked controversy again? |
Latest whisper is that XL might go 365 on some of the routes at HUY, would be nice if they had more than just The Canaries for winter sun.
|
I recon we'll get SSH with them! Would they base an a/c at HUY all year round and run higher frequencies on some routes?
|
That is the rumour, not sure about SSH though. Additional interlining capability would be great (Paris/Brussels/Dusseldorf) nothing wrong with KLM but seat capacity limits availability hence drives up prices.
|
Winter flights would be the next logical step from Excel. Could see TFS, LPA, ACE, AGP, ALC - enough for an aircraft based half the week

A-H
was alluding to the F70. if they ran a 737-800 they would still max out on seating capacity, I am sure. The scheduled was a 'flag carrier'/star alliance suggestion. Lo-co is great for A-B but through ticketing is a no-no and that is what a flight to another hub would be ideal, giving the travelling public more choice and therefore by definition, better value as competition drives down prices. |
Sorry, thought you were meaning Excel as you mentioned SSH on the same line:O
