Coronavirus: Air passengers told to wear face masks https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52498345
Passengers are also being encouraged to pack their own food and drinks to decrease contact. |

So how do you eat and drink wearing a mask? |
Most aircraft the cabin air consists of 50% recirculated air already been used in the cabin. So it will be interesting to see what if anything is done by Regulators/Manufacturers/Airlines to keep the recirculator fan filters in better condition. Maybe change the filters more often than they do at present?

Germany started tracking and testing from Day 1, their deaths are 20% of the UK. Govt pumps billions into GCHQ so pretending we could not do something like this is laughable, phone companies can tell you where you have been to within 30 metres day by day for months. Inept, incompetent, complacent is the hallmark of this Govt. A relative of a family friend who is Polish was studying in Uni in UK. He went back in mid march when lockdown happened. Met at airport, app installed on his phone, told to isolate and told they would track his phone. He got messages to respond to at all time of the day and night from 9am to midnight. It wasn't that difficult. BTW for England we are talking about 550 new cases per day for a week or so, at best. |

Airflow in cabins is very complex, but in general you are mostly affected by those around you. So if the infection rate is 20/100k a flight of 350 people will have <<1 (0.07) case. The risk on the aircraft in these cases isn't really to other travellers, but to the crew. If you are limiting to people without symptoms you will get a lower number of infectious people. If everyone then monitors themselves/is monitored you have the ability to isolate them quite effectively. The premise of 14-day quarantines is that you are expecting numbers to be much higher than 20/100k. "High" infection rates are a very safe assumption right now, but might not hold in 4-18 months. SARS-CoV-2 is more infectious than SARS-CoV-1; therefore, harder to contain. However, it isn't impossible. What is does require is significant coordinated action, and a risk averse attitude. |
Another conundrum for the airports and airlines is that on one hand they will try to introduce 'measures' that they think will reassure passengers (or 'theatre' as one poster has said) but on the other hand they make what was already a horrible airport / airline experience so utterly unbearable that people will just not fly in the numbers they used to. The sight of an airport or plane full of glove and mask wearing folks is only likely to promulgate fear not alleviate it.
As far as business travel is concerned, there was a chance of redemption if this had been a short-term issue but the longer this goes on, the better people will become at finding alternatives to the point that only really occasional travel will be required. I wondered how I would cope at first without being able to fly to projects but frankly technology (far from perfect but functional) has allowed me to continue without the stress of airports and the cost of flying. Profit margins are increasing due to the lower costs involved. The money stays in my business rather than being spent at airports and airlines. |

Just heard an Aer Lingus flight from Belfast to Heathrow was 95% FULL ! Told demand was high. Demand is high for people to try and get back to normal but we still have to stick to the rules.
No social distancing, no hand sanitizer, no face masks on the plane and passengers told to wash their hands on landing ? What was the airline thinking about, they will screw it up for all others ? |
Article on the EI BHD-LHR flight refered to above contains a couple of interesting points:
Loganair's chief executive, Jonathan Hinkles, said conversations were continuing about how to move on after lockdown, but that social distancing on board was impossible, due to:
The European Commission is preparing to unveil a set of rules for the safe reopening of air travel when the lockdown ends. Measures being considered include compulsory face masks, disinfection of planes and social distancing requirements in planes and airports. |
London Heathrow airport’s operator is looking to assist with establishing a common international standard for health screening, by testing technology intended to reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission. It is to explore such options as ultra-violet sanitation – which could be applied to security trays – plus contactless security procedures and equipment, as well as thermal screening combined with facial-recognition technology to assess passengers’ temperature. The operator says the data from the trials will be shared with a view to “jump-starting” the creation of common international standards for health screening. Chief executive John Holland-Kaye told a parliamentary transport committee on 6 May that such a standard would be central to freeing passenger movement. Flight - Heathrow trials aim to set common standard for bio-screening |
The Canary Islands will be the first destination for flights with passengers monitored by a secure health application called Hi + Card and free of Covid-19.
This was transmitted today by the Director-General of the World Tourism Organization, UNWTO, Zurab Pololikashvili to the Tourism Minister of the Canary Islands Government, Yaiza Castilla, who thanked him for this “great news” Hi+ Card hi + Card is part of the solutions that the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is supporting based on the commitment made with the Government of the Canary Islands to help the recovery of tourism in the world. It is a Canarian initiative, global in scope, linked to Turisfera the Canary Islands Business Innovation cluster, and launched by Air Institute and Tourism Data Driven Solutions (TDDS) in collaboration with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) |

Re travelling if you don’t want to sit next to someone stay at home it’s your choice nobody is forcing anyone to travel. Borders need to be opened up and planes need to start flying ASAP. Otherwise you are going to end up with ruined economy’s. Unemployment will be higher than it has been for decades. The state will be supporting all the extra unemployed adding to the already massive state payments which we can ill afford. |
Spacedog, I couldn't agree with you more. Unfortunatly, the climate of fear created is now so great with daily artificialy death counts (Yes, people dying with Covid is not the same as dying because of covid) and comments from Scientific advisors and Ministors with comments like 'Deadly virus' means that people are now scared witless to even leave their homes. The virus in the community at large is actually very low, where as the virus in care homes and hospitals is more prevalent and because this is the area in which the majority of the testing is taking place, this is having a dramatic effect in skewing the figures.

UK airlines say they have been told the government will bring in a 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving in the UK from any country apart from the Republic of Ireland in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The new restriction is expected to take effect at the end of this month. |

Why is it unenforceable? Other countries have been doing it successfully. The numbers arriving each day are so small as to be manageable.
Agree it should have been done at least two months ago, more like three. |
All well and good to ease lockdown and protect the vulnerable BUT untll the UK gets the testing to the higher levels? Nothing.
1) I am a key worker but because I have no symptoms, I cannot get a test to see if I am an asymptomatic carrier. 2) My partner is a key worker in the NHS but, likewise. 3) My partners daughter (aged 30) is a key worker and had the virus badly but just scraped through not having to go to hospital - so she was not tested. Doctors allowed her to return to work. Her mother nursed her at home (we do not live together) and isolated from work but also allowed to return to work. So that's three of us with no tests and all at work. Not clever. |
