I understand that flight + cabin crew are worked hard over summer with less work in winter (so fewer annual hours used in November), and that aircraft maintenance will likely be weighted towards winter rather than summer - so there is less flying capacity in winter. I realise also that some older aircraft will be exited over time. However, is the fleet really that stretched in winter ?
I always thought that in winter Ryanair had plenty of slack in the system. I don't see Ryanair leasing lots of aircraft over summer 2019, so am wondering if there really will be a severe aircraft shortage over the coming winter. My suspicion is that this is just an excuse to cut some underperforming / loss-making routes |
A couple of years ago they had to cull flights because they didn't have enough pilots. Now they're saying that they have far too many, according to another press story

Anything more than a marketing ploy? “If you want flights next year book early because there won’t be so many” probably a better campaign than “fly on our new 737max .. er 737-8200”. Easy might just be wiping it up with their A320/321 fleet.

Will be interesting to see how much ezy will have raked in over the summer compared to fr, their neo aircraft apparently 25/30% more efficient than 320/319 fleet, fr must be pissing their pants atm.

Such challenges will lead Ryanair to trim the worst performing parts of their network, and re easyJet, Ryanair are considerably bigger and significantly more profitable. Let's not forget Ryanair can expand through Lauda with Airbus too, so the 737 is the not the only option for the group at the moment ...
