Very few arrive/depart via Thameslink to Luton, most via M1.

LTNman 24th Oct 2013 05:15

And they would have to change trains as stations like Hendon and Mill Hill don't have a direct service to Gatwick only a direct service to Luton

Good to see easyJet adding new routes and growing its home base, in todays announcement!

I see a planning application has gone in for yet another airport hotel. This application is for a 6 story 120 bedroom hotel just down from the Encore. This new hotel will be built partly on the former Mondi Packaging Premises. If built this will make a total of 6 airport hotels and will be a Ibis Budget Hotel.

With regards to hotel development around the airport there are 5 hotels (752 bedrooms) located close to the airport. This includes a 124 bedroom Ramada Encore and 188 bedroom Hampton by Hilton. Other established hotels in the market include Ibis, Holiday Inn Express and a Premier Inn. Planning permission exists for a 156 bed hotel on the adjoining site (ICH Group) as well as a 152 bed hotel for Park Plaza on land adjacent to Airport Way

True, but relatively easily done at City Thameslink or Farringdon with no change of platform needed. It is as is easy/difficult as transferring to a shuttle bus at Luton Airport Parkway.

Whilst clearly not as convenient as LTN, LGW is relatively easy for train travellers from Hendon, Mill Hill, etc., compared to, say, LCY, LHR, SEN or STN.

Thameslink web site says to go via St Pan, both Farringdon & City have engineering outages at the moment. Any travel journey is about 1 hour more and with London Bridge reconstruction for next few years.....diverts via Tulse Hill etc.
If Gatwick was better for the market, why did El-Al setup camp at a North London airport.
I still think it is not a great route from LGW at the moment.

Quite agree with you Pabely. I am sure easyJet would have tried it by now if they thought it was a worthwhile route.

Do you guys think that, just perhaps, there may be one or two Jews living in that part of the world and, furthermore, some non-Jews might fancy a visit to Tel Aviv? It's just that I read somewhere that some people live close to or like flying from airports other than Luton

LTNman 25th Oct 2013 21:10

Passengers travelling to and from Luton Airport are set to benefit from plans for an improved train service.

It has been announced the company which ends up running the rail link into London will be required to provide a minimum of two services an hour to the airport during the morning rush hour.
They have got the story completely wrong, the requirement is for more night trains. Documents supporting the new rail franchise, issued on September 26, stipulate there must be a minimum of two trains per hour arriving at Luton Airport Parkway between 3am and 6.59am from Blackfriars on Monday to Saturday morning, with a maximum interval of 40 minutes between consecutive arrivals.

Time will tell but I see it being a money burner.
Brighton which used to have a good Jewish community does not anymore. The big growth for this community is Hertsmere, bottom of A1/M25 and traditional community bottom of M1.
As C3B says, EZY must have looked at it.

Sounds like a Hendon/Mill Hill overspill. Same old story probably, youngsters can't afford house prices in the towns they grew up in.
