Oliver Jaycock, ‎general manager, marketing, for London Luton Airport told a business meeting in Leighton Buzzard on Thursday that part of the reason so many people drive to the hub is the currently limited rail service from London.

He said he felt it would make a difference if there was a reliable and frequent service 24 hours a day.
What is he talking about. There are already at least 7 trains an hour in each direction plus a service that runs through the night. What needs to be sorted out is the delays caused by fare collectors on the shuttle bus. When the service was free many passengers got to the terminal quicker as the just hopped on a bus without have to queue up.

New rail franchise includes requirement for more night trains to serve Luton Airport - Luton Today
I wish they would extend the franchise up to here in Northamptonshire, especially once the Midland Mainline has been electrified north of Bedford.

The last East Midlands train leaves Luton Airport Parkway by about 10.30pm and the first train doesn't get to the airport until about 6.30am, plus we only get two train an hour and fares are horrendous compared to First Capital Connect.

If my flight is due into Luton any later than 9pm, I won't risk the train incase I get delayed and left stranded, only being able to go as far north as Bedford.

Weekdays your last train into Northamptonshire is 0044 from Luton Airport Parkway. There is one at 2332 changing at Luton Town.

I agree that there is a paucity of southbound services from Northamptonshire. Given sufficient funding EMT could run a shuttle from East Midlands Parkway to Bedford and return a couple of times a night thus serving both airports. One stumbling block is the overnight engineering works on the twin track sections north of Bedford. Still, it could be made to work.

I think the situation will certainly improve for Wellingboro and Kettering as the sensible thing to do will be to extend outer suburban services to a mix of Kettering, Corby or Leicester. This happened when Peterborough was electrified, and some slower trains from Euston end up going well north of Northampton, the end of the "traditional" commuter belt there.

But right now adding more long-distance trains at LAP probably means less for Luton...

I know my memory is fading, but the exit route would have been a 'new' road along the route of Percy Way, tunnel exiting in the region of the old control tower, then left behind stand 10 (was Monarch hangar). Demolition of Hangar 24, Halcyon House and then down the embankment through what was Vauxhall staff car park. Just like the People Mover from the Parkway, this was, and I quote, "cost engineered out!". A really useable one way system.

What Norwegian rumours nothing has been said before

Errr then what? Do you think that the old approach road via Eaton Green Road and its residential housing would be a better solution as an exit? That's an extra 4 roundabouts on narrow roads that are congested just to get back to where the existing airport road hits the A505. Also you would be looking at a tunnel at least twice as long as the exiting one.

Clearly there would have had to be a new exit route constructed and as Buster has mentioned it was obviously considered! (I heard something similar at the time!)

Ref: Wigmore Park.....Nothing has been mentioned to local residents.

To be honest now that the one way system has been sorted out I can't see any problems with what we have now as the traffic is flowing. Also it is using the shortest route for the M1 and Parkway.

The horseshoe arrangement of the aprons allows a maximum amount of stands to be used.

A new exit route would have required the road to be dropped again thus wasting space in the CTA to allow a tunnel to be dug. Whatever route was used it would have had to pass under either the terminal or the Easyjet hangar.

Also Easyjet want more non stop trains from London to stop at Parkway. That can only come from EMT as the long distance provider of trains to the North.

boeing_eng 14th Oct 2013 08:09

The traffic may be flowing but the set-up is a total bodge!

That could well happen with EMT in the next year or two... There is talk of a third hourly service being introduced for Kettering and Wellingborough, which will continue North to the East Midlands.

As when Corby station opened, which is a spur off the Midland Mainline, both stations had their half hourly service to Leicester and the North reduced to hourly, with the other service terminating at Corby. But due to local pressure, people want a twice hourly service to Leicester re-introduced.

BUT it all depends if the service would stop at Luton Airport Parkway, as at present both half hourly services from Wellingborugh and Kettering stop at Bedford and one stops at Luton and the other at the airport. While the other three hourly EMT services run non-stop to London from either Market Harborough or Leicester to London.

I doubt any of the current non-stop trains to Leicester will stop at the airport, as people from further afield already complain the Midland Mainline is one of the slowest Intercity routes in the country, when you compare it to time/miles that you can travel on other routes.

I suppose it all boils down to space being available on the tracks and additional rolling stock. But at present there is only five trains an hour running on the fast tracks in each direction.

Another alternative could be that some First Capital Connect trains run non-stop to the airport, and then continue all stops to Bedford. London Midland which runs similar services on the West Coast Mainline, and they run non-stop trains from Milton Keynes to London, so surely trains to Luton Airport must be feasible, and I am sure commuters from the town would like this too!

Ultimately the problem with the airport station is unlike the other three London airports, it has no dedicated train services purely for users of the airport and has to fit around the current timetable, with trains stopping to serve other towns too.

As we all know, the airport also does not have its own station and lies a mile away from the terminal. The inconvenience of this will prevent some train users from using Luton.
