PS. Bet they were pleased to be using a remote stand now that work is being carried out on stand 11 !! |
lets not start having a pop at NQY!!! Whats the chances of RYR eventually using one of their BRS based aircraft and muscling in on EZYs good little number up to the Toon. |
If you are interested in an objective view, I would say NCL is geographically remote from other competing "major" airports and this has been its major attraction. This gives it a wide geograohical catchment (in terms of sqaure kms) but to suggest that the number of people living within it is "huge" is not accurate. 2.5m including the Teesside catchment. 3.0m if you include Cumbria.
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2...ds/pages/a.asp If 2 airports are extracting over 6m passengers per annum from that, I'd say that's a pretty good achievement. However, unless you can create a bigger catchment area by getting people from overseas to fly into the area, then the number of passengers you can extract from the 2.5m - 3.0m local population will become progressively more difficult as passenger numbers rise and even tougher in tighter economic times. It is quite the opposite problem to somewhere like LBA or DSA, where you have lots of people nearby but lots more competition too. If you live in Newcastle, I imagine the sum total of where you get to in say 75 minutes is NCL or MME. Live in Leeds and, on a good day, 75 minutes will get you to LBA, MME, MAN, LPL, DSA and EMA. I wouldn't assume either that everywhere else is seeing "massive growth" for summer 2008. Quite the opposite I suspect if you actually look closely at what is actually being added in terms of extra seat capacity. |
NCL
Hold on the razor blades chaps. Over recent years, unless I am mistaken, NCL has seen consistant growth. Alright there is a blip at the moment but this is common through numerous regional airports.
Take my 3 locals. BHX. Similar passenger levels to 2003 but expected to increase this year. EMA Boom with Easy and Baby, stagnant then boom with Ryanair. This year there will not be such an increase. COV. Boom with TOM, now cut back but will I am sure recover. Look at the NCL positives. The First long haul has only recently started operating and is doing, on the face of it, OK. This is a new market for Newcastle After the Open Skies has settled down I would expect NCL to be one of the first new regional services. New operators will be attracted but the aviation industry is full of ups and downs. Centre cities |
CC, agreed - NCL lagged behind in the original LOCO boom and then caught up and we are in a lull again. We still have a better mix of operators than many - LOCO, Charter, Regional, Mainstream e.g. we are well ahead of many regionals in terms of EK and other mainstream carriers (LH, SN, AF, KL).
Now, where's NIA's Kevin Keegan... |
That would be Dave Laws :ugh: Not quite the Messiah needed though in all honesty

Some interesting NCL statistics....ex CAA
Year Passengers Movements Freight 2000 3,147,000 82,940 4,246 (tonnes) 2006 5,431,976 58,940 8,190 Can anyone explain the huge drop in movements coupled with the huge increases in Pax and freight. PS This statistic should be brought to the attention of those who always object to airports in principle....NCL has achieved a massive increase in passengers with a massive reduction in flights. |
Gill used to have quite a few ATRs coming and going, also their maintenance base here too. However the numbers were probably no more than EZY and LS are now. I also wonder if light aircraft movements are included in that figure, JP did a good job at decimating that number.

“no doubt ATC & amended CTZ's did their bit too” What a load of b*****ks ATC has never turned away G/A, nor has the extended CTA (the CTZ is the same size!!) had any effect on GA traffic in and out of NCL. NCL ATC has always had a very good relationship with local G/A as you would see by the amount of traffic transiting the Controlled Airspace. I would suggest the increase in charges brought in by our last CEO created the drop, however I would look again at the CAA stats as they cannot include all traffic? I have listed the years movements stats below 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 82929 82385 78699 75175 76025 78693 81559 These do not include touch and goes and go-arounds! |
As one of the P/T Destructors I must say that with very rare exception ATC do an excellent job in coordinating local GA with commercial traffic. If anything, albeit anecdtotaly, coordination has improved over recent months, with controllers being much more relaxed about "expedited departures" with commercials established. Maybe their new tower with improved view has helped.
p.s. Thanks to Sophie for the Tower visit a couple of weeks ago! |
I've been looking at a ski brochure for 08/09. When I find a place I quite fancy I see that I can get to it from: Gatwick, Heathrow, Glasgow, Stansted, Bournmouth, Exeter, Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham, East Midlands, Manchester, Leeds/Bradford, Doncaster, Edinburgh or Belfast.
NCL? Not a chance. |
Newcastle used to have a fair sized ski charter programme, with weekend services to GVA, SZG, INN, CMF, TRN, PDV, LYS and GNB. However currently the charter operators, usually TUI, Crystal, Inghams and Balkan only serve SZG, INN, GVA, TRN and PDV - having stopped GNB, LYS and CMF. The reason I suspect flights have been dropped from the charter programme is that low cost carriers are now beginning services to these places during the winter, so passengers now have a choice to build their own package and obviously the charters were loosing the competition. I suspect it wn't be long until we see LS or EZY doing SZG etc in order to try and get some custom away from the charters.
Having said that the charters always seem pretty full and NCL still has a fair choice of destinations, but I agree it would be nice to see more, judging by the success of current ski orientated destinations, the Geordies are quite fond of a bit of piste action!!! |
The Thomsonfly ski flights have been quite busy the last few weeks.
Jet2s flight to CMF however it has been very hit and miss! |
lukeylad... all the ones i have done so far have been busy, and ive got a few more coming up! (jesus, gettin out of bed at 3am just shouldnt be legal)
The CMF will start getting busier as the Ski season really only kicks into full swing after the xmas, and it wont be long till all the school trips start! just watch! |
Ah 3am starts how i do love em!
I see what you mean about the school trips etc tis the season! |

Came across this on another thread. Flybe are trying to buy Jet 2's Gatwick slots Im afraid for a Newquay service
http://www.westernmorningnews.co.uk/...=sidebarsearch Wierd, since I was thinking the other day that Flybe could be a good replacement should Flybe every drop the service |
Jet2 Gatwick Slots
Sadly it appears jet2 are in freefall at the moment at newcastle. Its looks as though the curtain is about to fall on the London Gatwick route. I personally feel that at newcastle jet2 appear to have had little success, with Loads on any 737 route rarely above 100-110 and more regualrly around 70. I think the Gatwick and cork routes would be better served by a CRJ700 type aircraft where they would be full almost every flight.
I feel jet2 should focus on the 757 routes where i believe they will have seen the most succcess. They can now compete with the main charters (thomson and TCX) using same standard 757 aircraft and not a 737 which is quite small for a TFS. they even now have Inflight entertainment available which will be a big draw. Sadly i feel that J2 days are numbered at newcastle and it will be a sad day if they do draw to a close. Maybe a better plan for newcastle would be 2 757s and 1 737.. However i know this will never happen as jet2 make there money on the mail flights. I was just thinking about PAX operations. |
