I think it's 2 aircraft all week with a 3rd on Fri - Sun. It's certainly for first to base an aircraft at an airport for only some days of the week.

I wonder what it will do from Mon-Thu? Perhaps it will be a different aircraft every weekend where it flies out empty and get's maintained, where another will operate the next weekend and then that will fly out empty and go to a maintainance base, then another aircraft for the next weekend, flies out and gets maintained and so on...

That's correct.

This is actually baffling, reducing flights which have higher frequencies in June and July during the peak travel month of the year? No doubt due to Ryanair demanding lower fee's and throwing their toys out of the pram as per usual.

ryan2000 11th Feb 2013 18:46

What ever happened to the 5th LHR which was to compensate for the loss of Aerlingus' Gatwick service this summer. No growth from Aerlingus since 2006. I'm not a great fan of Ryanair but they have gone from 3 to 23 destinations from Cork since the recession began and are paying full charges on most of them.

I know they've muscled in on some existing routes but who else would have started Fuerteventura, Pisa, Betgamo, La Rochelle, Bordeaux and Carcassone from Cork?

They didn't get the slots, in their preliminary report for FY2012 Mueller states new slots at Heathrow for the domestic Irish operation is a priority.

FR have being going down this road over the last 2 or 3 years. Take DUB:
Busiest month is June, reduction in July - very large amount of traffic is to sun spots of Eastern Europe in June. Reduces in July and turns more to inbound markets. All reduces in August/September. Most people get out in June/July and return more gradually during July/August/September. FR are unlike Aer Lingus who can maintain a constent schedule and profit at the same time.

very high loads on bhx/ork route almost up to a320 load on some days
and man also good with overload on snn flights

EI-A330-300 22nd Feb 2013 23:20

Aer Lingus will now operate Palma from 31 March to 26 October, flights outside of 1 May-15 September were loaded earlier this week.

With Jet2.com launching services to New York(Newark) towards the end of this year from East Midlands, Leeds Bradford, Newcastle, Manchester and Glasgow, would not the CAA not approach them and entice them to offer some of the services via Cork?
Knock managed to do this with some other UK carrier several years ago..just a thought.

brian_dromey 23rd Feb 2013 10:58

I think those Jet2 flights are basically scheduled charters, mostly sold through Jet2 holidays. I think the aircraft even stay in New York for the duration of the stay.

LHR certainly had a 5th daily summer rotation for a number of years, think it used to be a W pattern from DUB. I guess that slot is being used for BHD or SNN services these days. ORK seems to be in a difficult place at the moment for EI. On one had there are opportunities for additional flights and routes here and there, such as a 5th daily LHR, increasing frequency to Paris, possibly taking over some BHX and MAN routations by mainline, or frequency increases at Regional. The problem is that both the Regional and Mainline fleets are pretty stretched at the moment and there is no large-scale order of new aircraft. the VS contract takes care of the new mainline arrivals and the new Regional fleet is backfilling mainline out of DUB and replacing older units. It would seem a mixture of commercial and strategic reasons are conspiring agains expansion at ORK for the present time.

not a good start to the year at cork
January traffic down 2.2%

cloudier 28th Feb 2013 16:00

sorry traffic down 2.7%

BlueSki 1st Mar 2013 16:55

Any news on the airline filling the gap on the summer charters this summer? We had Monarch last year, Orbest gone into receivership. Any word?

ryan2000 2nd Mar 2013 18:53

Traffic at Cork slightly down for January and February. On what basis is Cork predicting growth in 2013? All of the major carriers have less capacity than in 2012 with the exception of Ryanair and their extra European routes. Wizz have withdrawn from 3 routes since January.

CCR 3rd Mar 2013 12:37

Often thought Turkish airlines would be a great candidate for Cork. 737`s operated into Dublin always have great loads, a massive hub in Istanbul with connections to China, Japan, India, South East Asia, Middle East, former Soviet Union countries, Africa and in itself, one of Europe`s largest economies and one of the few actually growing well!

Tom the Tenor 3rd Mar 2013 14:46

Turkish has been mentioned on here now a few times. Apparently, a few years ago TK put Cork under the microscope but nothing came of it at the time. However, you can always return to the well and my understanding is that a contengent of the Cork Airport gang were recently at a Turkey tourism fare in Dublin. As against that Turkish are about to increase their service to Dublin from daiy to about eleven or twelve a week once the summer schedule begins so that will have made it somewhat harder for Cork in the Istanbul department. No harm in plugging away at it though for next year if the increased Dublin services do well.

What is of far more concern is news that BA biz type passnegers are being offered very significant price reductions if passengers begin their long haul travel from Dublin through Heathrow as against Cork and for that matter, presumably, Shannon as well. There are so many empty seats on many of the BA Heathrow Dublin flights that if you compare fares with Cork on the Aer Lingus/British Airways codeshare as against Dublin originating BA long haul flights the saving ex Dublin are very substantial. One example quoted was a biz class fare from Dublin to Australia was more than Euro 1,000 cheaper than a Cork originating flight on the BA codeshare.

I prefer not to use coarse language on this forum as there is enough of it in daily life but with the above comparison in mind Cork Airport is bolloxed!

Game over, nearly. It is all very discouraging.

At least snn will have their core North Atlantic long haul assured in the months ahead with the Aer Lingus 757 deal. I am mentioning snn not from an envying point of view but it must give some kind of reassurance.

Hope in the future of Cork Airport - what hope?

CCR 3rd Mar 2013 17:22

Would be happy to see EIR basing an extra ATR and recommence some flights to Dublin, Belfast and London Luton for a start:{

cloudier 4th Mar 2013 10:01

Anyone know why EI725 LHR/ORK diverted to SNN last night?

widebody69 4th Mar 2013 12:35

It's the same in economy, though I'm not sure on who's side the problem is. Is it EI jacking up BA codeshare prices or the other way around. Just did one this weekend return, 100 cheaper to book 2 flights individually than as one through codeshare. BA out of Cork is very hefty for shorthaul, though longhaul is more reasonable.

brian_dromey 4th Mar 2013 14:51

Probably represents EI charging hefty sums for the connection. In fairness the LHR flights are always busy with people just going to London, although of availability is that tight maybe they should consider putting the A321 back on the route instead of the fifth daily, if they can't get the slots.

widebody69 4th Mar 2013 20:04

Hydraulic problems. Needed the longer strip, no steering on landing.
