Wizz Air routes now bookable, Cork-Warsaw ending 27 October asweel as Warsaw-Barcelona, Forli, Glasgow-Prestwick, Madrid & Venice-Treviso obiously due no doubt to the charges WAW charge.... :mad:

Are you sure its definitely axed? Considering that they've only just loaded the other 4 routes, the timetables may not be finalised and they could still be loading routes?

The other 4 routes all have daytime flights. This is the first time I recall that Wizzair haven't operated any red-eye flights from Cork, when Wizzair first launched at Cork, the flights to Katowice were after 1AM!

Yep Wizz Air have been bitter with Warsaw Airport (i.e FR-DAA) for a while over fee's Ryanair completly pulled out and Wizz Air are downsising routes their if you check the website all other routes except the 1's ive listed are axed are not bookable....

They may still be loading flights given the number of routes still not bookable. I'd have expected an announcement by now (ala Ryanair) if they were axing all those routes due to high airport charges.

Ryanair axed flights from Warsaw to Dublin in 2008??? Wizz Air (look threw press releases) have critisied WAW on a number of occasions for their charges just seems very likely at this present time as all other routes (check) are now bookable...

All RYR flights to Ireland from Alicante were cancelled, seemingly at short notice if the reaction of pax is anything to go by.

Slightly overstating it...one person was escorted from the terminal.

To liven the thread up a bit - well, you all know how much I like Madrid from previous rants so today Cork does indeed have one of those rare arrivals from the Spanish capital in the form of a student flight at 2030 this evening. Looks like it will be a Swiftair MD.

Enjoy what there is of the summer at Cork because come winter things look like they will be dire and normally I try to be kind of optimistic for the place. :eek:

Bordeaux Airport
 

Just returned yesterday with FR from Bordeaux. I am a regular to that part of the world and was delighted when Mr O Leary decided to go direct from Cork.
He has done some kind of deal with the Airport and is based in a galvanised shed next door to the main Terminal which they call BILLI . The faclities here are overcrowded and very hot. The old terminal which EI still fly into from Dublin is so much better.
My friend who was travelling with me got all the way Air-side in the other terminal and there was consternation trying to get him back out and over to the shed however the security staff were very helpful unlike the shower we have here in Cork who are overly paranoid . Thank God we did not give FR the old terminal here as it does give a very bad impression when you arrive and leave if the facilities are crap.

Thank you for the short but interesting and informative report about the Ryanair operation to Bordeaux. Sure hope the destination returns next year as it is a part of France which I have felt would work from Cork in the summer season.

The flight had about 100 pax on the return leg from BOD but was full going out on Friday Night. As per usual there was about 98% Irish on both legs. Why oh why cant Failte Ireland / Cork Kerry Tourism /Cork Airport try to work marketing campaigns around Airlines which open new routes to try and encourage tourists from these countries. While in Bordeaux I was at a food and wine fair where the Canadian and Hong -Kong tourist boards had stands . There was about 500,000 people there . I have no doubt the costs involved would not have been huge considering the exposure available .Cork Airport /DAA need to do more to bring people in .

But the problem is that visiting Ireland is prohibitively expensive. 6 quid a pint in Temple Bar, burger and chips are the staple menu items, crap B&B's who feel that charging 100 quid a night is a rite of passage. Latest survey in the Indo has Ireland as the 2nd most expensive place to buy your groceries. Beer 67% more expensive than the EU average.

Ask yourself why a frenchman would want to leave behind the weather, a superb motorway and rail system, great fresh food, inexpensive wine etc etc to visit Ireland and be ripped off. Hell most people in and around Dublin are still heading to the north to stock up which should tell you something.

1/ Not all want to spend holidays drinking pints in Temple Bar. The average price of a pint in the country is between 4 and 5 euro

2/ Ireland now have some of the best restaurants in the world and I know here in Cork you can get fantastic value.I eat out two weeks ago in JAQUES here in Cork and had three courses for 25 euro

3/ The average price of an average B&Bs here now workS out at about 30 euro per room per night .

and Ireland is vastly different to France in both good ways and not so good

Yes Ireland is expensive but having just come back from Bordeaux .The prices except for local wines are not hugely different.

Whatever the reason the fact is that inward tourism to Cork in particular is almost non existant. The terminal there is full of Irish people going on holidays and Polish immigrants going back and forward to their homeland.

The additional Ryanair aircraft that's based there for the Summer will probably mean that Cork will out perform Dublin and Shannon for the Summer months in the rate of decline but the loss of the 4th EI 320 from late October will result in another significant drop in traffic for Winter 2010/11.

While there has been some reduction in prices in recent years, the rip off practices in the final years of the Celtic Tiger did huge damage to our reputation abroad and it will take a while to convince people that Ireland offers good value for money.

Furthermore airports became complacent and assumed that the growth would go on and on. It's also easier for EI and FR to ferry Irish people to Sun destinations than it is to operate more challenging routes that require marketing abroad.
