The news here in Ukraine states the reasons why Wizzair Ukraine are closing down on 20 April.
1,Loss of passengers, they were expecting a loss of passenger numbers in the region of 45 - 50% for 2015 compared with a loss of 20% passengers in 2014, so far this year numbers are already down 18%. 2, The continuing conflict in the Donbas region, the loss of services to Lughansk and Donetsk caused the airline to return the two newer aircraft last year. 3, The huge depreciation of the Hryvnia. 4, Control of foreign payments, meaning payments are only allowed in Hryvnia, causing major problems with suppliers. 5, The upcoming new regulations by the ministry of infrastructure regarding daughter / sister airlines, whereby the CEO of the daughter / sister airline must be a Ukrainian citizen and have at least 50% controlling interest, that airline must also provide national services as well as their normal international routes, which Wizzair say is not possible because there is no way of filling a 180 seat A320 on regional services. It has been expected here that Wizzair would close it's Ukraine operations since last year when Wizzair voiced issues with the new regulations which they say are for the sake of UIA only, so that UIA have a monopoly for flights. The closure comes just days after Wizzair's application to operate two new routes from Kiev / Lviv to Doncaster / Sheffield and Kiev / Lviv to Kosice were rejected by the ministry of infrastructure. The biggest losers by the closure of Wizzair Ukraine will be Kiev Zhulyany and Lviv airports, as well as the Ukrainian cabin crews. Source: Several Ukrainian news websites. |
Points 3 and 4 played the biggest role. If you can't get your money out of a country for 6 months (while you lose 40% of it in EUR/USD for the rock-steady local currency) you won't continue trying for long. The introduction of the mentioned local rules had been suspended for now (it wouldn't save Ukraine International anyway). Nothing changed in Ukraine in the last 25 years, the man with the stamp is controlled by the one coughing up the dosh. Which is a shame as the people of Ukraine would deserve better. Btw suddenly UA authorities would negotiate Open Skies which was delayed by them for something like 5 years already.

TBSC, you are correct points 3 & 4 played the biggest role in the demise of Wizzair Ukraine, as for the new rules they have been reinstated and are supposed to take effect 15 December.
It is a great shame for the Ukrainian people as they have lost the only LCC they had, yes they still have Wizzair but only flying half of the flights. One of the main headlines today is that the government do not want to lose Wizzair at all and are trying to arrange meetings with senior management of Wizzair, but it seems to me that the decision has been made and will not be withdrawn anytime soon. Sad times indeed for Ukraine passengers until the open skies agreement comes into force, which we are told will be this year, but this is Ukraine and nothing gets done when they say or so it seems. |
My understanding is that with the start of the S15 season, the open skies agreement signed by the EU and Ukraine in Nov 2013 means that any EU airline can fly from anywhere in the EU to/from Ukraine. Thus the legal existence of Wizz Air Ukraine becomes substantially less necessary on purely nationality grounds for the parent Wizz group. If I've misunderstood what the 2013 signed agreement means, I'd be very grateful if someone could correct me.
Is there anything that Wizz Air Hungary cannot do between Kiev/Lviv and the EU that Wizz Air Ukraine could do ? I imagine that the liberalisation afforded to an EU rather than Ukrainian registered company is well worth having to give up flying Kiev-Moscow. I'm curious in particular why all 6 routes between Ukraine and Italy are being dropped - is this down to poor profitability / lack of aircraft or something else around licencing ? I thought there were a large number of Ukrainians working in Italy which presumably translates to consistent demand for air transport. Furthermore, as mallorcaguy mentions, why did Govt decline permission for WU to operate routes between other EU airports and the Ukraine for dates post open skies liberalisation, on what grounds was this refusal enforceable in law, and can these routes be flown from today by Wizz Hungary instead ? |
