Surely just another demonstration of the myth of low cost air travel. It's only achieved by lumping the costs on to someone else. The Belfast Telegraph article was pretty badly written, seeming to fit a particular agenda and more designed to antagonise the ill-informed rather than to inform: On Wednesday a spokesman for the shadow council admitted that extra money had been signed off on to cover the cost of Ryanair's demands but said that only £369,000 had been agreed. At a meeting held in private in the past 10 days the super council's services and transformation committee agreed to sign off on the extra money, with the bill to be added to the annual rates collections. The forced adoption of the airport by Strabane's ratepayers has been a major bone of contention since it was first announced that the two council areas were to merge under the Review of Public Administration. despite the fact that only 4% of the local population actually uses the terminal. No doubt the people of Strabane would be happier to use one of the two airports located nearer to the newspaper's offices. |

These were the outbound services from knock who positioned back from Derry they operated the outbound knock services to stansted, Luton, Liverpool and lanzarote

As a Strabane rate payer I will not be holding my breath to benefit from the profit that CoDA will be making despite their rather optimistic business plans. I read the initial article in the BT and it came across as a rather cynical attempt by the airport management to lay the blame (for the uninitiated) on Ryan Air for the increasing losses. There was a follow up article which was more accurate but the damage was done. As a regular traveller I would prefer to use Derry but the routes are not there. On a slightly different note I have in the past had dealings with the airport management regarding private flying and I can assure you that they are in no way general aviation friendly to the extent that few private owners keep their aircraft there if any other options are available. In fact there are frighteningly similarities to Blackpool in most of CoDA's management methods. I would love to see Derry make a go of it but as you point out with the present road infrastructure it's almost as handy for Strabane folks to use either of the Belfast airports. CoDA is as your well aware a political decision airport and as such will continue to drain the council resources for the foreseeable future. I'm not sure what you mean in that it is in the Limavady council area, if that is the case why is it being funded by Derry? Solar |

Didn't know that. I understand that the council border between Derry and Limavady is the small stream that you cross just before the roundabout turn off to the airport, this stream borders the east side of the airport. I have a couple of mates to the east side of the stream on Brisland rd who are happy to be on that side of it. Cheers |
Current Airport general manager has resigned and will leave the company in January. He will be replaced in the short term by the chap who managed Blackpool Airport, until a permanent replacement is found.

This mornings inbound Liverpool and Stansted arrivals both diverted to Aldergrove. Not sure about the outbounds.
Weather is being blamed, some say fog but a few passengers on the flights posted on twitter blaming ice on the runway. If it was ice then it is not acceptable as a Met Office warning about ice was out in advance and thus the airport should have been prepared. |

Still no Faro for any month other than July in summer 2015. It usually runs from May to October.
Surely Ryanair have finalised their 2015 summer time table by now? If so then overall Derry Airport 2015 figures will not be too healthy. The Faro flights often showed >90% load factor plus they get a good run on the beer trolly, especially on the way out. |

The airport master plan predicted 480,000 to 550,000 for 2015, at what point do the planners have to sit down and rewrite the plan? How does the money being pumped in to keep this airport running stack up against the claimed benefits for the local community? The master plan claims to contribute £14m to local economy when the passenger figures were 400,000+ Based upon these GVA per employee values, it is estimated that CoDA currently contributes £7 million to the regional economy from direct jobs and a further £7 million GVA resulting from local indirect and induced jobs. In total therefore, CoDA currently contributes over £14 million to the north west economy. It is estimated that by 2022 CoDA will contribute £34 million to regional GVA. |
Airport has confirmed via telephone that the RyanAir CoD->Alicante flight will only run during July this year.
Considering the "traditional" Derry holidays are always last week in July and first week in August this is another blow to the airport. Has there been any confirmation on the Faro flight availability? |
Alot of people in close proximity to that airport choose Belfast i.e people from Coleraine or even Ballymoney or Tyrone.
When I was there it seemed like there was more people from Donegal than anywhere else. They really need to bring in more routes.. But then the problem is no one uses it. I think when people hear derry airport they don't know about the flights out of there. |
I'd say the Faro flights are in the same boat and are running July only.
Really surprised at this, Faro was a good seller, have used it several times over the last few years, was even packed late Sept and early October never mind peak summer, would love to know the reasoning behind Ryanairs' decisions. August is the summers, kids are off school and people want to go on hols, does not make sense at all. I have no proof but I have a niggling suspicion that Ryanair may have wanted to pull the Faro and Alicante flights altogether but may have been persuaded by Airport to try July to see how bookings went before committing to any other months. |
