It frightens me to think that when I fly in and out of Dubai that my life and the lives of others around me might be put at risk by someone with such a bizarre personality disorder.

Might surprise you but he's good at what he does...

Still working out when ACE finished so will update shortly.

FAO could surely go X3 weekly for the full season in 2014? The loads have been great all summer. Also why are RYR still hanging onto PIK, surely they could give another operator a go at a GLA service.

VickersVicount 15th Oct 2013 20:08

would have though a GLA service would be perfect with the newly invigorated Loganair / BE on a Saab

SWBKCB 15th Oct 2013 21:45

Also why are RYR still hanging onto PIK
Because its a nice short route that fills in a gap in the schedule - presumably even on these loads RYR are making more (losing less?) than having an a/c sat doing nothing?

Decry a GA airport!

Hi Folks
TR between his spats with C U stated that CoDA is a GA airport, I can assure that since it adopted commercial status it has been anything but GA friendly.
In the early days this was down to the original manager's attitude and his indoctrination of other ATCos at the time.
ATC is the front door of any airfield and CoDA has a terrible reputation.
Since the "new" management have arrived and regulations have eased somewhat (training does not require an airfield to be licensed) there has been no change in flying hour allowance as GA still have to adhere to the commercial scheduled hours which have been cut dramatically and are set to be reduced even further for the winter. These reduced hours are at the stage where the flying club, helicopter school will have to either move (where) or close. As for the home based operators they are all actively seeking other fields to operate from.
I understand that CoDA lost 3.3 million in the last financial year.
Glad I'm not a Derry rate payer.

GAZMO 23rd Oct 2013 07:42

WOW....3.3 million!!!!
With these annual losses can LDY survive

Can you provide a link?

Reducing the opening hours of operations is a standard means of reducing costs.

If no ATC presence does the airport simply revert to uncontrolled?

I do not hold a UK licence so I do not know the UK legal requirements for GA training at an uncontrolled airport.

Could some agreement regarding the use of the airport outside of published opening hours be entered by the Airport owner/operator and the flying schools concerned.

This obviously would require the flying schools concerned to have appropriate insurance.

A300BOY 23rd Oct 2013 17:11

They could allow movements outside published hours when the airfield is un licenced but I doubt they will. More likely they will ask for a large fee to stay open when required.

Solar 24th Oct 2013 14:16

A300BOY has got it correct, they could allow it but they won't. They apparently have concerns about train safety. Train passes close to the end of a runway and causes delays to air traffic but not the trains.
As for the 3.3 I don't have a link to prove that as I said I understood they had lost that amount, that not withstanding it is Derry council we are talking about and the losses at CoDA are well known but not I fear always recorded as airport losses.
With regards to asking the resident club and commercial operation for additional fees that's the same as cutting the hours, both are feeling the recession as much as anybody else.

Needs a bit of thinking out of the box. Based GA could be asked to sign a Letter of Agreement regarding out-of-hours use that specified a displaced threshold to avoid probs with the trains.

Rush hour

Must be a lively afternoon at LDY with all the day's flights arriving within 45 minutes (at 14.07, 14.30, 14.37, 14.52) and the first out at 15.06. So four on the apron at one time!

Tom the Tenor 30th Oct 2013 15:23

Any hope of seeing a few pics from Derry, please?

Thanks and hello from Cork. Cork-Derry-New York; Derry-Cork-New York and v.v. has a certain ring to it, does it not?!

Nice idea TTT but Derry`s main runway is is too short.

FR appear to be doing W route NOC-PIK-NOC so that in itself won't affect LDY. Personally I would have said reducing PIK-LDY and using the capacity for NOC would have been a way round it, would help LDY load factor.
