Holiday Flights 2010

Considering the urgent need to boost business at LDY, it is telling that there is absolutely no reference (nor do I recall any in the past) to the rumoured new flights to Bourgas for Summer 2010 - which had passing mention locally around six months ago. These are ignored on the website, although the scheduled Faro and Alicante flights are flagged, as are the returning holiday flights to Reus and Palma. A brief visit to the Balkan Holidays website shows that bookings are still being taken for a direct flight LDY to Bourgas, first outbound 08.45, Monday 21 June, last return 07.45 on Monday 2 August 2010. (Corresponding flight BFS to Bourgas operates 20 June to 1 August).

Isn't there anyone at LDY with sufficient experience or entrpreneurial drive to give a potential new operator even the most basic support or publicity? Isn't this what route development is about? What do they do all day?

cuthere 5th Jan 2010 09:14

Geolog, you seem surprised.

LDY is piss-poor at publicity. As I've stated on here before, you can drive through towns like Dungiven, Omagh etc and see ads for Ryanair flights from BHD. I once saw the same ads on the Dungiven Road in Derry itself! (I know these ads are placed by RYR, but surely management at LDY could voice concerns with this).

For some reason the airport has no obvious marketing strategy, meaning local people have no idea what routes operate out of THEIR local airport, and instead ude Lough Neagh International instead.

Pathetic. The website isn't much better mind.

Not a good start to the year, is this a sign of things to come?

cuthere 5th Jan 2010 09:29

Large fingers and an iPhone keyboard.

From an illiterate like you that makes me smile. I keep expecting you to finish your posts with "Sir" or "so it is" "so ah do".

Anyway, I'm surprised to see you back on the Derry forum after your last foray was deleted by the Mods because of its inappropriate content.

Toodle-pip.

Mods because of its inappropriate content
There was no malice, pathetic. The Mods and yourself must be a great bunch for a nights crack (not your way of spelling-but I don't care).

I went to a secondary school and never read.

No excuse for bad grammar from yourself. I have been watching you like a hawk, and it has taken me 6 months to find an error.

B737 EI, LDY FR FRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR (Had to add something of interest to the Mods as they cannot handle a deviation from aviation!) Happy New Year Mods - maybe you should get out a little more this year.

cuthere 5th Jan 2010 09:46

It wasn't bad grammar, it was a misplaced index finger. I'm awfully sorry old boy.

I didn't know I had a stalker (who went to secondary school and never read(!!!!)). Should I be flattered? Hmmmm, probably not.

More delays at LDY this morning because of the wx. The airport stats for Dec/Jan won't be brilliant with all the canx and diversions.

(As an aside I was through BFS on the 27th Dec. Was wondering what all the fuss was about regarding developments at the place; then I came across the new escalator. Amazing. That's really one in the eye for DUB, BHD, and even LDY).

Sorry spelling and grammar

Balkan Holiday Flights

Its absolutely pathetic. The existence of the flight is not even mentioned on the airport website let alone a link to book it.

There is a serious marketing problem with LDY. And its the same if you go to a local travel agency: full of BFS and no mention of LDY. This is the fault of LDY. If they can't even get local travel agents to promote the airport, how are they ever going to progress the facility.

I wrote to the previous manager about this very issue and he stated that advertising was the responsibility of the operator and not the airport. That's all very well but LDY is a loss making facility. Any advertising spend would also be in the airport's interest but if they're not even prepared to meet a tour operator half way is it any wonder that most avoid the place.

E for Effort.

So what you are saying is that there is a flight from Londonderry to Bulgaria next summer and there is no mention of it on the official airport website.
If this is the case, this is a disgrace and shows how inefficient local government is. Alright if it was Manchester airport I could understand a flight or two missing, but an airport 'fighting for survival' should have every available flight linked to the website. Basically if this was privately owned every flight would be listed especially with the location of your local airport. Surely your local newspaper should be looking into this, as government money is being invested and nobody at the facility seems to be given a damn.

speedbirdATC 5th Jan 2010 18:31

Could it be that these Bulgaria flights are in fact so popular that they do not need advertising?:) I hardly think so. I wonder if they are promoting Londonderry on the Bulgarian end of things?

gate 22 6th Jan 2010 11:57

Both Belfast airports (The City and Lough Neagh International) must have been closed as you got a BE diversion from BHD this morning (BIRMINGHAM)

cuthere 7th Jan 2010 14:35

The website has now been updated to include the Bulgarian flights. Do the good people at LDY read these forums?!

That brings to 10 the number of routes from the airport during the summer (assuming LTN is discontinued). It's getting there.........slowly......!

One wonders! Just in case: Edinburgh, Manchester and Paris please!

I see there was an arrival from Cardiff today, a FlyBe diversion from BHD, one of a few diversions over the last few days.

Mind you LDY has lost a few flights diverted to Belfast also.

I don't understand why the runway is closed first thing in the morning. If they know it will take 2 hours to clear the runway and they know the first flight is at 7:30am, why don't they start clearing it earlier?

cuthere 7th Jan 2010 16:11

With FZFG persisting ay BHD, I wonder will Derry see a few more divs?

Public servants as employees, a powerful union and staff unwilling to work outside contracted hours perhaps. Maybe the attitude of "but I don't start work until 7 o'clock".

speedbirdATC 7th Jan 2010 18:05

Flybe flights to/from Leeds, Doncaster due in later tonight.

Amelia Earhart 7th Jan 2010 18:40

Well if nothing else, the aviation statistics will be interesting for January.

Look at all the places it's possible to fly . . . . . . . but not from LDY! :{

speedbirdATC 7th Jan 2010 18:50

BEE 412 just landed from BHX. EMB 195 a/c

speedbirdATC 7th Jan 2010 20:52

Went to have a look this evening down at LDY. Four Flybe's in (3x EMB 195 and 1x Dash 8). Also a full load nearly on the Aer Arann to DUB:eek:

Amelia Earhart 7th Jan 2010 21:26

Any chance it might give FlyBe an idea that they should be operating flights to LDY anyway (and not the feeder service to BHD that they previously operated!)
