Can imagine the procedures to be followed,as stated not just the departure lounge to be cleared but all 3 of the SAT`s as well & no rescreening until the whole of airside is sterilised with then with the added complication of which flights will now be canx anyway & filtering out of the security lines those passengers....a mare.

Just observed the RYR from Warsaw transit overhead at 38000` heading W so STN still not accepting traffic.

Remarkably little ill informed comment tho which is a good sign so far.

Very very unfortunate but cannot see any other means of getting it back on track tonight.

I also think tomorrow morning particularly Ryanair’s first wave of departures will be cancelled due to tonight’s last wave of inbound being stuck at out stations and some having diverteded to other UK airports not a very good Easter weekend at all.

Having said that I do not blame MAG/Stansted for the situation I bet it was quite a worrying situation have a fire on a bus not knowing the cause I think evacuating through security was the only option.

Really unfortunate incident at a peak time.
Looks like it was handled very well by the Airport, but it really shows up how little extra capacity is available at surrounding airports to deal with the volume of a/c in such an event.

Just watched some so-called reporter doing an OB from Stansted on BBC Breakfast. Never seen so much incompetence in my life. Obviously not done her homework - saying the fire was out at FIVE am yesterday and interviewing two people who should have been on a flight to Barcelona. As a good old Army friend often said 'a total waste of rations'. Where do they get these people from. Rant over.
Good luck to everybody who could not travel yesterday evening hope you get on your way today.

Not a rant Compton, more a statement of fact. I studiously avoid TV News these days as it seems to be over populated with bright young things, oozing degrees simultaneously displaying zero common sense. Best wishes, of course, to all those caught up in this awful situation and ruined travel plans..My heart goes out to them..

I imagine I shall be heavily criticised for this but why did a bus on fire necessitate closing / evacuating the entire airport ? I get the police would be jumpy about terrorism, the risk of explosion of the bus fuel tank and all the smoke, but complete airport closure just seems to me slightly over the top. Yes I have seen the photos

What happened to Keep calm and carry on ?

No idea, can understand reason for stopping outbounds...were inbounds simply cancelled due to the resultant lack of stands or was there more to it?

Whatever happened it does make one wonder about the wisdom of nominating Stansted as an alternate if a relatively small landslide vehicle fire shuts down the operation (and gets you wondering about the robustness of more than just Stansted).

What happened to Keep calm and carry on ?
Thatís been a myth for a few years now; itís a phrase beloved by certain politicians, tea shirt and coffee mug makers but generally not matched by reality.....

Sorry, but shouldn't the airport's RFFS nearby have been able to arrive there immediately and extinguish the fire within a couple of minutes? It is not their duties perhaps? Just ponder the results.

From what I've read on Twitter it sounds like people were "evacuated" through security from landside to airside, or there was something linked to the evacuation that caused a security concern. The comments weren't completely clear but the impression I get is that people got airside without being screened, therefore the departures/airside areas are no longer sterile. It's then a case of everyone out, security and dogs in, and the entire airside area having to be searched that can take a long time.

People were evacuated from landside to airside without the necessary security checks. As I understand it, the whole airside part of the terminal including satellite buildings needed a security sweep before these areas were useable again. Thatís why no flights departed until after midnight (if any) because of the security operation to secure the airside areas.
I can only assume that because the fire was at the front of the terminal (landside) that this was the safest option available. None of us were there so Iíd say it is difficult to comment or have an opinion.
Praise to the staff and firefighters involved.

A nail a horseshoe, horseshoe a horse, a horse a King etc

Cheap/delayed bus maintenance, elec fault, small fire (groundside), multiple diverts etc.

Swiss cheese holes blah blah. Anybody care to guess the consequential costs to the likes of RYR, EZY and Jet2?

Maybe STN RFFS crews are only allowed to work airside.

The AFS whould have been first on scene.
Stansted has an appliance ready to respond to any emergency situation landside of the airport grounds whether thatís medical/ traffic accident/ fire.

Fire reported at 16:20
Fire under control at 16:40
Fire extinguished at 17:00

Oh dear it appeared hopeful at one stage this morning but the ill & uninformed posted as feared.

I honestly began to think that the question..."why did a bus on fire necessitate closing/evacuating the whole airport?"... would not appear on a "professional" forum.

A little thought, common sense & knowledge of the situation that evolved quickly coupled with familiarity of the layout at STN would save the "clever" remarks.

Kudos to the terminal management who took the right decision being fully aware of the disruptive ramifications for ops later to evacuate thousands of pax to "safety" airside.

Perhaps the speculators here would have preferred to be evacuated outside into acrid smoke & an unknown potential threat anywhere landside.

The first duty of the terminal management is toward the travelling public & staff`s safety & in this they fully succeeded.
