what is the market?
how many people go from Leeds to the City of London everyday - probably enough to fill one aircraft IF they all go at the same time
There is a train every 20-30 minutes and 2-13 travel time - miss one it's not a problem - miss the only aircraft of the day and you are stuffed

Is Leeds East Airport just like Manston Airport?
An analogy worth quoting:
A former RAF airfield in a relatively rural location, reasonable road infrastructure not too far away, huge catchment to the west, nothing much to the east but with better alternatives in the region.........Church Fenton? No, I'm talking about Kent International rather than Yorkshire International. The same fate would await investors in 'YIA'.

Using the same watershed method for Leeds East airport as a direct (more suitable) replacement for LBA and for the benefit of the catchment test ignoring airports of less than a million passengers within Yorkshire that would be further impacted by Leeds East Airport [watershed airports are NCL, MAN and EMA] then the time catchment population is approximately 5.5 million people.
So under these circumstances Leeds East airport has approximately 7 times the time catchment population of Manston airport. This is of course before any road upgrades from LEA to the motorway network have been constructed which of course increase the time catchment population. This figure also ignores the potential elevated time catchment population due to the East Coast mainline and the Trans Pennine express fast rail connection as well as other potential rail connections.
This is why you cannot really compare the two airports.

but why would anyone pay to REPLACE LBA which is (more or less) equidistant from the regions two main cities???
You open CF and people in Bradford have t o travel miles further - and they are voters as well

David, The Parish Council were on BBC Look North the other night with mutterings about noise, traffic etc and were asking for a planning consultation - all pretty low key though.

A start has been made. The first thing that must get built is the bypass of Yeadon and Rawdon.

It was an airbase for nearly 80 years. The RAF could have kept it and had fighter jet after fighter jet going in and out. That's why the local pub is called the 'Fenton Flyer'...
whereas I can understand the annoyance against HS2 going past the village (I am pro HS2).

No one is paying to replace it! Someone is paying to offer an alternative that may have better medium and long term aviation prospects for the whole of Yorkshire not just one city (I would say it definitely has better prospects). Because of the motorway connection v gridlock the difference in time between Bradford and LEA/LBA is negligible. There is already a direct rail service from Bradford to Church Fenton without the need for any expensive tram/trains going up hills! When you reposition an airport there will be losers and winners - there will be more winners than losers with this project. There have been discussions for some time now involving all parties who want to realise Yorkshire's civil aviation potential (please somebody put a link up to 'Calls for New Leeds Airport'-yep). The issue is not party political as the two airports are privately owned and this is not about winning votes it is about the best way of solving a problem. That problem involves historic exodus to other region's airports.

Exactly the same as Heathrow v. Boris Fantasy Island

I agree with your points Frank - it's a total non -starter
if you live East of Leeds you can drive to Doncaster or York and get a fast train; if you live in Leeds you can choose a train or LBA; if you live west of Leeds it's LBA, MAN or a train from Bradford

Film studio to be created at former RAF site
A major new film studio is to be created at the former RAF site at Church Fenton.
Screen Yorkshire, which has provided financial backing for a number of major films including A Right Royal Night Out has secured the rights to develop studio space in three of the hangars.
It is hoping the studios will deliver a significant boost to the region’s burgeoning film and TV infrastructure.

That sounds a bit awkward I mean if they are filming say a period drama and Jet2/KLM et al are `pushing tin` at the same time, its going to make sound editing a tough job, especially if one of those pesky high speed trains goes thundering past at the same time...
Still on the bright side you`ll be able to book a studio tour before your holiday flight to whereever....monster

Church Fenton Dispersal Tunnels
When I was instructing at Fenton students mentioned exploring the tunnels which would take flyers across to the dispersed aircraft areas on the South side - during an air raid.
Would anyone with actual knowledge of these tunnels - ie where they start and end, please pm EESDL

Leeds East Airport
Reminder of Air Display this Saturday. 26/9/2015
Vulcan Bomber - not many chances left.
Genuinely one of my favourite aircraft is the BAe 146 - So quiet they call it the WhisperJet.

Birmingham based Cello Aviation is to start 4+ new routes from Leeds East Airport commencing from May 20th 2017. The airport was granted a licence for international charter flights after an CAA inspection earlier this week.
Cello plan to operate flights to Faro, Malaga, Cannes and Palma using a 62 seat (first-class configured) Boeing 737-300 aircraft, with return fares starting from just under £1,000.

A grand, good luck with that.
Pop over to Leeds and fly with the Northern favourite airline and you will have plenty of spending money left once you get to your holiday destination.
