Be warned its trains.
Stats show Cumbrian journeys are some of most overcrowded
In autumn last year, the 04:22 from Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport was the second most crowded train in the UK with 219 passengers in excess of its capacity of 191, 215 per cent more than standard capacity.
The 16:00 Manchester Airport to Edinburgh Waverley service was the third most overcrowded by a rate of 196 per cent and the 18:00 Manchester Airport to Edinburgh Waverley service had 176 per cent more passengers than standard capacity.
Rounding off the top 10 was the 06:15 Edinburgh Waverley to Manchester Airport service which was 161 per cent over capacity.
If these figures related to London the Train Users Council or some other such protest group would be up in arms.
Sir Buffon Tufton of Tonbridge would ensure it was headline news.... not sure what the answer is.
I was hoping 2 years Back Lord O'Neill he of Goldman Sachs fame was going to be a cheerleader for the North but on the face of it he has been an utter damp squib!
Unfortunately the fragmented nature of regional pride "In The North" means we have little or no leverage to address issues such as this at a national level.

Back to aviation, Oman have signed a code share with Saudia. This will initially include connecting flights by Saudi from the UK. Hopefully it will strengthen the new Oman Air Service as well as consolidate Saudi flights ex Manchester.
---------------------------------------------------
Good news also re FlyBe Air Berlin
"Passengers can now enjoy non-stop flights from the German airports of Dusseldorf, Berlin-Tegel, Hannover, Munich and Stuttgart connecting to a massive UK domestic /long haul network direct Ex Manchester.

Trains (briefly). I imagine the chronic overcrowding will be between certain intermediate stations, but interesting that the common link is Manchester Airport/Scotland trains.
Some more good news - our ORD flight is operating for the second successive day and is expected 18 minutes early!
Re. flybe / Air Berlin. Am I missing something but don't only Dusseldorf and Hanover apply to MAN in terms of flybe services?

I often used the 16.00 to Edinburgh in substitution to Flybe, catching the train at Piccadilly. Lightly loaded from the airport, heavily used by commuters on stations between Piccadilly and Preston where it filled up again. I once stood all the way to Edinburgh having given up my seat to an elderly lady, but seldom that full!

Jet
Interesting about the talk of Delta connections at AMS. I know MAN has limited offering compared to AMS in terms of Delta but we are presumably not doing badly against other secondary European airports in terms of our offering when the Delta / Virgin flights are combined. Maybe this would sway Jet in the long run along with the unmet point-point demand.

The main people that could offer connections at Manchester are flybe. Given they codeshare with just about any airline they can get their hands on, I wonder realistically how much more space they can 'sub out' for a codeshare now.
I mean, CX/EK/AB/EY/AY/VS/TCX/SQ and more, I do wonder how many pax are actually their own point to point pax at Manchester now!
In terms of the USA, given how large the network is now, with Detroit looking likely to follow, connections could be sought, who would have thought in 2017 MAN would have more confirmed US destinations than the likes of DUB/MAD/BRU/FCO/MXP/BCN to name a few.

It depends if you view that as a bad or good thing. Airlines like Qatar have made a lot of money and employ a lot of people at DOH with negligible O-D pax. I've come off their flights and as little as 10 people are going into the country from a practically full A330.
I guess Flybe can always increase frequency and aircraft size in the future and more tertiary destinations can be added and be profitable.

Oh I didn't mean it from the stand point of wanting just O&D passengers, more that Flybe has so many codeshares now, one wonders how many passengers on a flybe flight into or out of Manchester have actually brought a full flybe ticket?

Some of those will have LHR/AMS connections (e.g. EDI, GLA, ABZ, DUB?) but some may not.
Places like Norwich, Exeter, Cardiff, or even Stanstead (for Cambridge) are I think ripe for this connecting traffic.

Flybe
There would need to be significant O&D for routes to be viable, the code share is set price per seat in most cases it wouldn't be a big money spinner (for the short haul leg) but a way to get bums on empty seats and cover costs which they may not of been able to do already.
If it's not then Flybe might have some problems.

Codeshares can be good or bad depending on whether the people setting up the deal know what they are doing or not! The good deals for the shorthaul carriers depend on the people doing the deal setting appropriate minimum rates that they are prepared to accept for their flight sectors.
