Bmi A330
Well over the last couple of months there has been many rumours to the plan BMI have for the extra A330 thats been hanging around MAN. Well I have it on good authority that after all the rumours, there is going to be no third route out of MAN. Apparently out friends at LH are going to take it off there hands.
Bit of a bummer really cause the service out of MAN - ORD/IAD isnt half bad!!!
Anybody knows any better then interested to hear!!

This is not good news indeed if true.
Do you know of plans for the 4th machine still in Toulouse ?
Have Midland finally given up hope of longhaul from LHR ?

Unsubstantiated, but I had been led to believe that the 'Star' A330 was going to be borrowed by LH who are still umming and arring over how or what to replace their A300s with.
I do believe that MAN - SFO is still being considered as a serious option for ship no.4, but as yet no decision has been made.

Well I did get a little info from an inside source but as far as transatlantic pulling out of Man that all depends on the LHR situation as MAN - ORD/IAD has been up and down but over the whole doing rather well (freight/pax loads).
Personally i feel if they go to LHR when they are just going to be another US carrier out of LHR. Its taken them this long to get under way, they should stick it out for at least another 2 years and i bet it will pay off in the end.
As for A330 number 4 i dont think even BMI know what they are going to do with it........Watch this space.

As for A/C No. 4, latest inside info, which is from a very reliable source, 2 days ago, is that this delivery date has been put back to December 2002.
SFO apparantly has been dropped as been not viable, but are still looking at BOS,MIA,DEN,LAX and poss JFK ( subject tom BA possibly dropping the route).
As for the service to ORD/IAD thanks for your comments, we try our best

See the bmi transatlantic operations release put out yesterday.
Interesting to see that they outperform AA on the ORD route after only 12 months operation.
Doubt we'll see HKG from bmi as the CX loads were only around 100 passengers per flight (don't have the figures to hand).

I must agree Ringwayman. I have dealt with the transatlantic first hand and the pax figures are usual 150+. Freight also doing really well as they are easy carrying 11 tones a flight which cant be bad. Long may it continue. Any thoughts on the new route ringwayman (or is it a dead loss.)

Hasn't capacity on the route effectively doubled with the introduction of the bmi service? If so, and the split of traffic is 51% bmi, 49% AA - then it stands to reason that AA are carrying roughly the same number of passengers as they were before. Given the high numbers of inter-lining pax for whom ORD is merely a transit point there is no reason why the two services cannot run alongside each other. The battle for the hearts and minds of the relatively small O&D, business class market will be more telling in the long-run I suspect

I think you have hit the nail on the head there. Is all well filling the a/c but you have to take into account the fairs being sold. There is very little point saying the pax figures are higher on one because it could all be bucket fares. BMIs "The Business" class is a good product and it does seem to sell well but the next 12 months will tell if the business pax feels that it was good enough to return to......

The point about numbers on the Cathay service is true about never having big loads but that is to do with the fact that priority was given to Amsterdam or Paris as it flew on to those cities first before HKG.A non stop would do well as all the seats would be avail for sale from Manchester.

Jocko0102, the CX service saw around 87,000 passengers carried in 2000. Compare that to the 1994 total of around 145,000 passengers whilst remembering that the same one-stop operation was in place. Where did they go wrong?

I went to one of Richard Hill's pilot's briefings early this year and HKG is a not on as the A330 can't do it. Range isn't a problem. It's getting over the Himalayas on one engine with a useful load that's the problem.
Going around them isn't an option apparently.

Well, what can i say, Montreal is a new one for me. My main worry is that BMI have been quite happy to leave the third A330 (returned early by SAS) under cover parked at MAN airport. This was be costing them a few notes in fees. So what is to stop them doing it to the four aircraft as well. The third aircraft has ONLY been used for spares for the other two aircraft or possibly operating the odd sector when the others go tits up.

I hope you have already thought of this but here goes. Stick the Star 330 on the LHR-DUB routes and mop up some pax over the next few days. It's a commercial operation is'nt it!!
