Well, the news we were all expecting has arrived - bmibaby to be closed down by Monday 10th September, unless a buyer can be found in the interim period. A very sad day for all concerned.

Dear all,

We have started consultation today with bmibaby staff, union and employee representatives to review together future options for the bmibaby business.

Despite attempts over many months by both Lufthansa and IAG to sell the bmibaby business, so far we have been unable to find a suitable buyer. While the efforts to sell the business are ongoing, we do have to look at options for bmibaby, including a proposal to close the business on 10th September 2012, subject to the consultation process. If we can achieve a suitable sale, or find an alternative solution, then we would avoid a close down situation.

bmibaby has delivered high levels of operational performance and customer service. Yet despite efforts to turn the business around, the high cost of fuel, competitive trading environment and economic pressures mean the business is incurring losses of around £25 million a year. IAG has also consistently said that bmibaby is not part of its long term plans and would not be integrated into British Airways.

Therefore we are reviewing the future options for the bmibaby business, and as a preliminary measure, we have made some changes to the summer 2012 schedule. There will be a number of bmibaby service cancellations from Monday 11th June 2012. These consist of all services to and from Belfast City, services from East Midlands to Amsterdam, Paris, Geneva, Nice, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newquay, and services from Birmingham to Ireland West Knock and Amsterdam. Customers affected by these cancellations will be offered an alternative date of travel or will receive a full refund.

The majority of bmibaby’s summer holiday flying will continue and customers can continue to book and fly from Birmingham and East Midlands Airport with confidence. Full details will be available on bmibaby’s website. We will continue to operate these flights due to the large number of customers who have already booked to travel during the busiest period of the year. We want to protect as many summer holiday bookings as possible.

We appreciate that this news is difficult to receive and understandably this is an unsettling time for the bmibaby team. We will ensure we keep you updated as the consultation process moves forward.

Regarding the sale of bmi Regional, detailed discussions continue and we remain positive of a successful outcome. We hope to provide you with more information very soon.

As you know, the proposed integration of bmi into BA is underway and we are currently validating the BA integration plans regarding bmi aircraft. Once these are complete and have been agreed then we will be in a position to share this information with you.

Thank you for your continued support,

Peter
Thanks for nothing DLH and IAG.

Has he got one? I'd rather hoped he'd be out on his arse with the rest of us.

More hot air from JC.

To the bmibaby team,

Today, we have entered into a consultation period with bmibaby staff, union and employee representatives to review together future options for our business.

In order to fully appreciate the options available to us, it may help to understand the current position we are in. While we have taken great steps forward, having delivered market leading operational performance and customer service levels, our business continues to incur significant losses. In recent years we have taken the necessary steps to improve our business such as reducing in size to reflect market demand and consolidating our operations into the Midlands and Belfast.

However, while the changes mentioned above have had some positive effect, the sustained high cost of fuel, competitive trading environment and economic pressures mean the business continues to incur significant losses. We are also constrained by our fleet type, and the network that is achievable with such aircraft. Most of the losses occur in the winter season, where demand to the core leisure routes is much reduced. Customer demand in the winter is for longer routes such as the Canary Islands, Egypt, etc, which are not within the effective operating range of our aircraft. In order to add these destinations to the winter network, the addition of longer range aircraft would be required. This would require significant investment, and against the backdrop of the losses being incurred, cannot be justified in the present circumstances.

Therefore without fundamental changes to the external operating environment and our network capabilities, we would continue to incur significant losses. In addition, following the sale of bmi, IAG has no plans to integrate bmibaby into British Airways and is making efforts to sell the business.

As a result the future options for our business are being reviewed. Whilst a sale of the business could still take place, if the company is not sold then, subject to the consultation process, the proposal is that the business would be closed down with effect from Monday 10th September 2012. If a suitable sale can be achieved, or a suitable alternative solution can be found, then a close down could be avoided, or at least the impact of such could be reduced.

While we review the future options for our business, as a preliminary measure we have made the decision to cancel a number of routes with effect from Monday 11th June 2012. This will aid in securing operational robustness, protecting the integrity of the remaining network, and alleviating any pressure on the network over the summer. It will also orientate the network to focus on core leisure markets only. Flights for the majority of our holiday destinations will remain in operation throughout the summer and customers can continue to book these routes with confidence. Any customer affected by a cancellation will receive a full refund automatically to their original method of payment.

I appreciate that such news is difficult to receive and we had all hoped that a suitable buyer would have been found by now. Understandably this is an unsettling time for all of us, and I will ensure I keep you informed and welcome your input as the consultation process moves forward.

Thanks as always for your support,

To anyone from baby who reads this from a mainline colleague who's had the pleasure of working with you.

Sorry. This is awful and in no way the fault of the people who work for baby. You've been marginalised, ignored and now treated like cr*p. Good luck in finding new jobs and thanks for being some of the most professional and competent people that I've ever worked alongside.

You don't deserve this one little bit.

What an utter sack of sh*t.
This is a result of years of mismanagement.
Typical airline don't-know-how!
When bmi mainline was driven onto rocks by idiots like Nigel Turner, it could (should) have been asked, didn't they see where they were going?
For instance; increasing frequency to twice a day on a particular route and then just 3 months later coming off that route entirely??? LHR-TLV springs to mind!
What utter idiot can do that and call it a business?
Now baby, the child of such stupid parents, it's no real surprise that this is where it had to end up.
I'm sorry for my ex colleagues, hope you all find something else in due course.

And yet the baby site is still taking bookings for all cancelled flights after June!

May I wish all Baby staff the very best of luck in the coming months. A credit to the industry.

Announcements made on a Friday are rarely good news IMO. Especially with a bank holiday.
Good luck to all of you and I hope the future improves!
