dear Groundhog

I think you have agreed with me on the higher prices.
As for reduction in services if there is only one company handling the ground services then they dictate the terms and conditions to Management who from recent decisions by airlines to pull out of DTV will roll over and accept anything which is thrown their way.
P.S. I have tried to find out if the weekly Thomson Flight to Tenerife has been withdrawn but Thomson's direct me to a premium rate tel. no. to sell me another holiday and DTV have totally refused to even acknowledge my E Mails. I think this is what you call a monopoly albeit with two Holiday companies in the UK now instead of 20 some 10 years ago.
It does not auger well for " our favourite local airport "

flyglobespan holiday and flight bookings booming

From DTVA website, 6th Feb 2008

HOLIDAY AND FLIGHT BOOKINGS ARE BOOMING AT DURHAM TEES VALLEY AIRPORT

Flyglobespan, who serve more destinations than any other airline from Durham Tees Valley Airport, has today announced a fantastic rise in sales for January 08.

Destinations that have proved to be particular hotspots include The Algarve and Alicante, while Malaga tops the popularity leader board. Jersey, which flyglobespan offers exclusively from Durham Tees Valley airport only has also proved to a be a real hit with the local market. A new destination for 2008, Tenerife, is also selling well and show signs of becoming the top selling destination.

This huge rise in bookings follows the announcement of flyglobespan’s biggest ever seat sale, which launched on Boxing Day. Although the sale was predicted to be very popular, the demand for flights far exceeded all expectations.

Commenting on the sales, flyglobespan CEO Rick Green said, “I am particularly delighted that our sales for accommodation and flight packages are so strong and credit this to the fact that our team now has a real understanding of the North East customer and what they want. We now offer such a range of accommodation type in terms of board basis, location and star rating – which gives our passengers a huge amount of choice and flexibility.

Added Durham Tees Valley Managing Director Hugh Lang, “The boom in booking vindicates both flyglobespan’s decision to offer flights to those destinations most popular with North East passengers - and our confidence that the public would respond positively to the chance to travel from their local airport. The success achieved by flyglobepsan is underlined by the fact that we expect they will be flying their 150,000th passenger from Durham Tees Valley within the next few weeks and everything points to the rapid growth in bookings being maintained in the months ahead.”

Globespan spin-Stop me if you've heard it before !!

In my experience .. this a gentle reminder to the north east folk that these flights are actually operating...and please can we have some bookings!!

One of many announcements that are put out this time of year by all airports to encourage people to book??

Look back on previous postings...sorry but heard it all before!

Most of GSM flights this winter have been split loads with other airports. Can anyone tell me how many have actually departed DTV,with it being the only departure point?

Normally I would dismiss such a press release as pure spin, but it mentions they're about to carry their 150,000th passenger from MME - didn't it take bmibaby about 3 years to reach the same milestone?

Are DTV and Globespan so desperate that they are to celebrate such an insignificant figure as 150,000? It's a number, what next? 160,000; 175,000?

Marketing spin.
When (and if) Globespan reach 1,000,000 then it could be seen as significant, but until then please, no more irrelevant numbers.

Groundhand - Considering GSM have only been at the airport for just over 15 months and have only been operating a base from there for less than 12 months then yes, I consider it to be a significant milestone. The figure is mentioned as an extra in an article that primarily focuses on the rise in sales for their flights so I suggest if you don't want to read any more "irrelevant numbers" you look elsewhere...nobody is forcing you to read this?!

Bartrams - I believe 4 flights a week are split loads with either EDI or GLA - Lanzarote, Tenerife, Malaga and Alicante though I stand to be corrected on that one. Obviously it would be better to have our own aircraft going to these destinations, but if we don't have the loads for a full aircraft then it's the next best thing - at least we have a service!!

Hope GSM keep on operating beyond Summer '08 - but Bartrams is correct-we need the folk of the Northeast to book the flights!!!

Pure spin I'm afraid. These are not departing passengers but arriving passengers included. So the average Joe bloggs goes off on his hollies for a week in magaluf, he's counted twice as he departs then comes back a week or so later. The more realistic figure is 75000 departing pax.

Help!!!!!!

I have been using this airport for 20 years and have seen many changes in that time.
First the good news.
The access is improved and soon to be improved beyond recognition. Car parking is now just like a grown up airport ( relatively expensive but quite well ordered and organised ). Check ins are well sited and unfortunately very quiet. The photo recognition system at security control (which delayed flights to no purpose ) has at last been binned and at my last visit about a month ago the security staff were smiling which made the stripping off in front of them less intimidating.Air side is till a problem with most of the staff giving the impression that they are doing you a favour serving you drinks and they do not want to be there but unfortunately this is not just a DVT problem.
Now the downside.
Thomson have dropped their Tenerife flight,Globespan do not inspire you to book early in case they drop or reschedule the flight and for holiday destinations this unfortunately a huge problem.
Where do we go from here?
Peel Holdings looked to be a good fit for the airport when they took it over but from looking at the dropped flights and the apparent dissaray in the senior management of the airport it would appear that the only increase in passenger numbers is being generated by the regular trooping flights into the airport. Thank God for the Middle East conflicts and Catterick Garrison say the numbers men.
It is very easy to abuse the people of Teesside by saying they are not supporting their local airport but the destinations are not there. Chicken and egg I suppose.
P.S. Why is it that airports cannot organise a smoking area airside?. Looking at the layout there are at least two areas which can be utilised with security and also safety in mind. But there again I am only a customer.Think about it DVT and be a leader rather than a stagnating soon to be industrial estate.

Paarmo - smoking inside??
Where have you been since last summer?
It is now against the law to smoke inside a commercial building.
We can't blame DTV management for this, they are just adhereing to the law.

Groundhand - the question was for smoking airside not inside. I guess Paarmo has identified areas airside outside that could be used. Personally I think smoking is a filthy habit anyway so I am delighted the ban is in!

Sadly GSPN's business model revolves around doing all that is needed to keep a flight in profit. The customer just has to accept it. Until GSPN gets some decent shareholders and stops being the family business that aint gonna change.
So as far as I know there are no plans to combine and or change flights but that can change for reasons that are stated above.
If the flights are well booked then they will go uninterupted. Lately the loads have been really very good indeed. Let's hope they stay that way.
At least when you get on you will get great service, the crew at GSPN MME really are a lovely bunch, all local and desperate for the base to work. Quite simply to keep their jobs.
So fly with them and get the decent personal touch, alot of other airlines do not offer this.
At least with the flights that have been combined, it isn't the MME pax that suffer, it is the GLA or EDI. Small point I know but worth bearing in mind eh?
Keep my glass half full please

I went to a pub on Sunday. The Barstaff were friendly , efficient , knowledgeable about the drinks and in one particular case singularly outstanding in a female way. The result...the Pub was empty.
The reason why it was empty was that the structure of the pub was decrepit and the drinks disgusting ( It was a Sam Smith's house ) . There was no entertainment as all equipment which had to be hired or licensed had been taken out to save money.
The local Globespan staff may be very nice but I when I book a holiday some months in advance I expect it to go ahead and unfortunately I have very little confidence in Globespan to deliver. Until they can convince everyone that they will deliver months in advance then I am afraid that many other people have the same view. Oh and by the way Jet 2 are less than half the price to Tenerife.

Last word before bed

Ramps , wheelchairs and special access toilets are provided for disabled passengers and no one has any prolems justifying these changes in the structure of buildings. Baby changing facilities are freely available. Why shouldn't smoking facilities be made available for those that wish to shorten their lives. After all some 25/30% of people at DTV smoke and the disabled facilities and baby changing facilities are used by less than 2%.
I guarantee that halal meat would be made available if 25/30% of passengers asked for it.

Because smoking is a health risk to others. Wheelchairs, special access toilets, baby changing facilities and Halal meat is not.

Paarmo, I read with some degree of acceptance particularly about lower fares with other airlines but Jet2? Not exactly known for the bargain fare at least not in my experience. Great for localilty and very efficient at what they do but cheap they aint. Bangers for aircraft too.
Anyway more to the point you are correct in making the issue about cost because that is what dictates where Jonny punter goes. FR have consistently proven that most will travel with whoever has the cheapest fare on the day. In a way good for them, free market and all that. The customer wins in the short term although watch those fares go up stedily over the next few months, airlines will not keep taking cuts in their revenues with fuel costs going the way they do. Who will blink last depends on who has the biggest coffers. FR certainly have a large pot of loot so expect them to be one of those who blink last.
I guess all I'm saying is that if one wants a local airport then one must be prepared to use it, or frankly; loose it.
GSPN certainly have not helped themselves with their flight changes and that I must admit would make most think again. The flights at the moment are selling well, so hopefully not too much of those changes for this summer. Just the one aircraft with a reasonable schedule, lets wait and see?

Just to change the subject a bit, according to yesterday’s local papers (19th Feb), a planning application’s been submitted this week by a local Darlington based property development company for a total of 11 two-storey office blocks on a ‘brownfield site to the NE of the airport’. All are intended specifically for airport /aviation related small / medium sized businesses apparently, with the potential for 1200 jobs.

No details as to the exact location yet, so it’s difficult to tell whether or not this is actually on the airport site itself or the farmland somewhere along the main road past the rail halt. As Mr L was quoted as being ‘unable to offer any comments on the plans until he’d seen the details’ (finger on the pulse as usual) it suggests that it falls outside any of the land currently owned by Peel.

If the scheme’s approved, it’s likely to be competing for the same limited number of tenants that Peel themselves would need to attract into their own site development. I believe Peel were supposedly planning to use the revenue gained from letting their own business park premises to fund some of the airside work at DTV so I suppose this could now depend very much on who wins the race to construct and let their buildings first, and from the delays to date, it doesn’t look likely to be Peel.
