Local news says the court case DTVA against Bmi baby starts today.

Might we hear what actually did happen?

The High Court hearing between DTVA and bmibaby happened around three or four weeks ago. Local radio reported that it’s the judgement on that case that’s expected to be given today. DTVA claimed approx. £11.5million compensation from bmibaby but the financial implications are not apparently expected to be given today.

Great, more bad press. In fact I'd even go as far to say bmibaby have not only won, but completely stamped us into the ground. Surely that £3m loss quoted was not from DTVA alone?!

Surely it is now time for the inept management at MME to go and get some professionals in who can actually run an airport and realise the customer (airline) is king and that their attitude towards the airlines must change otherwise MME is doomed !!

If rumours are to be believed (and rumours surrounding MME often do come true), there are two individuals in management who haven't got long left to go.

Makes for pretty depressing reading.
However, looking on the bright side there will be lots of MOD Charters coming in shortly, blowing the dust off the runway.

Peel seeks investors to take stake in its airports

from Crains Manchester Business News website:

Peel Holdings said today it was seeking investors to take a stake in its airports arm. It said the move followed “a number of approaches” and would support its plans for further investment in the terminal at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

It said the the proposed developments at JLA would create about 1,500 sq m of additional retail space, several new shop units and a new passenger security search area, with new, latest generation passenger screening equipment. Peel Airports also owns Doncaster Sheffield and Durham Tees Valley airport but the division has been losing money.

Neil Pakey, deputy chief executive of Peel Airports said: “Liverpool is now one of the UK’s major airports and has been less affected by the current aviation slowdown than most other airports. Peel has grown the Airport from 0.7 million passengers to 5.4 million passengers in just over 10 years and it is well positioned for continued development."

Peel said the search for an investor was consistent with its “strategy of developing greenfield assets into attractive infrastructure investments

Simple isn't it!
Get investors to buy into the airports group, then swap their investment for MME or DSA with 2 of the investors. Easy way to offload the 2 loss-making airports and keep LPL with a profitable airports arm! Cynical I know but who can't see that coming

Can you really see any investors coming forward though in the medium term? I hope they do though, since any potential business deal that rids us of Peel can only be a good thing - having said that there's always the possibility that any new owners are as bad or even worse than Peel. Still, I'm getting too far ahead of myself.

No flightplan as of yet and i would imagine about 1315 take off from LHR with a 1400 landing and 1700 take off from from MME

Just been looking at the passenger figures for this year so far and it shows a 50% reduction on last year's 1st quarter.
If the remainder of the year carries on in this vein and there is nothing to suggest that it won't, the passenger total will be around 333,000 for the full year down from 650,000 last year and down from 918,000 in 2006. Total aircraft movements are also down enormously.
There may be a fine dry summer forecast for the weather but I feel there may be thunderclouds approaching Teesside Airport.

"Durham Tees Valley Airport is to keep its name"

From the Evening Gazette Website

CALLS for Durham Tees Valley Airport to revert back to its original name have been rejected by the airport’s owners. Teesside International airport changed its 40-year-old name to Durham Tees Valley in 2004 after Bmibaby pushed for a more marketable brand which incorporated a city name.

This emerged earlier this week when Durham Tees Valley lost its High Court bid for a £12m damages payout, after Bmibaby controversially pulled its planes out of the North-east. But with Bmibaby no longer flying out of the region, some people feel the time has now come for the airport to return to its Teesside roots.

Five years ago, former Redcar and Cleveland Council leader Dave Walsh publicly criticised the re-branding, but was eventually outvoted by his fellow councillors. Mr Walsh said today: “I think in retrospect, my concerns have been proved correct and I still think the re-branding was a mistake. It was given its Teesside International name for a very good reason - because the name Teesside is familiar to businessmen and engineers across the world.“Perhaps given the loss of flights recently, Peel Airports might want to re-think. I’d be happy with that because that’s how the airport is known throughout the world.”

Peel Holdings has however today confirmed that there are no plans for change - with a spokesman saying: “The Airport is not considering changing its name back to Teesside Airport.”

Despite having been called Durham Tees Valley for nearly five years, many people still refer to it as Teesside Airport - as do major travel websites such as ebookers, lastminute.com and Travel Republic. Many of the region’s road signs are also still to be altered. Back in 2004, Stockton North MP Frank Cook, who has been a champion of the airport for many years, was also against the name change.

“There’s no doubt it was changed at the request of Bmi,” he said. “They insisted on it despite protestations from myself and other people. I wouldn’t be opposed to a name change and it might be appropriate to do it before they change all the roadsigns, which still say Teesside. It was an unfortunate re-naming, and if they were to rename it, I would hope we think of a decent name - perhaps I would suggest Cleveland Airport. That would get a few pots boiling.”

Not so sure it was totally the work of BMIbaby. I think Peel Airports went a little crazy with the naming thing. LiverpoolJohnLennonAirport, and the ludicrous DoncasterSheffieldRobinHoodAirport went with it.

Still I agree, Teesside was a far better name, it did the job

However, I think the folks at MME have far bigger worries right now than another corporate branding

Agreed ..

But the name change was certainly the start of the slippery slope
