Can anybody confirm that the following aircraft have left the EK fleet and if so what has/will become of them?

A6-ERG, A340 500
A6-EMD, 777 200 (77A)

Are any others on the way out imminently?

EMD will be recycled into spare parts

Any chance ERG could find a new home?
Must admit I'm very surprised ERG has been one of the first to go after all the money EK will undoubtedly have thrown at it.

Seems like EK is re-structering the fleet instead of growing like in the past as just a few changes for 2015 have been announced so far. Some A345 and B772 has left the fleet in the last weeks.

Are you for real? Shannon daily service on 330!! Heathrow doesn't warrant a 320, with demand more suited to a 319. Equally Paris doesn't work outside of low cost. The route you suggest in my view is a non runner ...

I am completely serious. I can see a market for these flights. How you may measure the market of a certain route off connectivity to a hub is beyond me. If aer Lingus had their old flight times that would allow business people travel to Heathrow, they would be able to fill an A320. Dublin has connectivity to all major European hubs, and has twice daily flights to Abu Dhabi and Dubai using 3 777's and 1 A330-200. In my mind, Shannon would have a market for dubai or even Abu Dhabi. I know countless people who either drive to Dublin, or connect in Heathrow to get to Australia.

How do you know Paris doesn't work? Do you have special figures, market research or wisdom that we do not have?

Now, this route may not work, and I may be incorrect, but I can see a market for it.

Dublin has connectivity to all major European hubs, and has twice daily flights to Abu Dhabi and Dubai using 3 777's and 1 A330-200. In my mind, Shannon would have a market for dubai or even Abu Dhabi.

Carriers have significant presence at Dublin as Dublin serves the entire country. Ireland is a really a small country after all. It should also be noted that those 3 777s and A330 every day don't carry just people, they have cargo from the entire country loaded in their bellies, transported from all across the country's well-developed road transport network. So, in essence, the Shannon region is already well-served.

I know countless people who either drive to Dublin, or connect in Heathrow to get to Australia.

How many are these people travel in J or F class? Emirates A330s, for example, have 12 First Class seats and 42 in Business Class. Do you really see F demand from SNN?

How do you know Paris doesn't work? Do you have special figures, market research or wisdom that we do not have?

CDG has always been cut by the carriers which tried it? Is that not enough evidence ?? lol


There certainly is a market for such traffic ex SNN, but it is relatively small and currently well served by DUB flights. IMO here more likely lies an opportunity for TK than for EK/EY. TK, with their more suitably-sized aircraft and the opportunities to connect to sun holiday destinations in Turkey and Egypt, would seem to be a more realistic prospect for SNN.

I admire your creative thinking, but what we have seen in this age of consolidation is that it takes more than a route that can generate profitability. Airports are competing for airlines to place aircraft on routes, the result being that airlines are shifting aircraft to the most lucrative markets. In my view and based on previous operation out of Shannon that a route by Emirates is a total nonsense and I'd eat my hat if it happened. Sorry to burst your balloon.

Equally re Shannon Paris CDG route; many have tried and many have failed. Amsterdam failed and a start up in the form of Skynet failed. In Paris various aircraft sizes were used and the airlines judged it uneconomic. Such a route is best suited to a low cost carrier.

Equally your comments of Shannon LHR, totally wishful thinking. AerLingus pulled the flight before, in favour of a new base at BFS. Finally, if your suggestion of a SNN DXB did succeed we can expect that many of the users in SNN LHR would deflect to DXB for connections and as another contributor suggested they would jeopardise the success of DUB DXB.

Needless to say if SNN airport pay enough they may get such a route on the map for a limited period of time.

I really hope so because I'm off there in July with school and have been on the edge of my seat hoping Emirates would restart it, potentially giving us an easier route there!

Wow! Nepal, and (from another thread) North Korea - school wasn't like that when I was there. Wish I could turn back the clock. we were lucky to get a school trip to London!!
