EZY new base is Basle
EUROAIRPORT-BASEL-MULHOUSE-FREIBURG
easyJet has announced that EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg will be its next major airport base and has signed a long-term deal which will guarantee low fares to consumers for years to come.
During the coming summer season, easyJet will base three additional Airbus A319 aircraft at the airport and will also recruit flying crews locally. This will make easyJet's famous low fares available to the 4.4 million who live within 60 minutes' drive-time of the airport and will create substantial economic benefit for the local communities.
easyJet already operates from EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg to Berlin Schoenefeld, Liverpool, London Luton and London Stansted and expects that 1.5 million passengers will use the airport in the coming 12 months. This number will rise significantly during 2006, as it is likely that easyJet will add more aircraft next year.
easyJet is in the process of negotiating a number of new routes from the airport, but is also inviting consumers to suggest where, within Europe, they would like to travel and why.
Consumers can post their suggestions to a special email address [email protected] . Those whose recommendations match the destinations chosen by easyJet will enter a draw of 1,000 free tickets to fly on the new routes during the summer.
Airports that want easyJet's services and are willing to commit to attractive long-term arrangements should also get in contact with us.
Ray Webster, easyJet Chief Executive, said:
"We have been negotiating for many months on this deal and I am delighted that easyJet will be able to provide the long-suffering passengers who live in the area with a stable airline offering the lowest fares in Europe.
"This is a great success story. Our existing routes have already proven exceptionally popular with passengers and easyJet looks forward to recruiting and basing flying crew at the airport, providing significant economic benefits to the whole region.
"I must congratulate the management of the airport for putting in place a deal, open to any airline, that recognises the particular needs of low-cost operators - this is a great contrast to the management of Zurich Airport which is presiding over spiralling costs and dwindling passenger numbers.
"easyJet is already the largest airline at Geneva Airport and this deal will make us the largest airline at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. As Swiss joins the other dinosaur traditional airlines by limping wounded back to Zurich it shows their inability to compete with easyJet and how we are quickly becoming Switzerland's national airline."

Please correct me if Iīm wrong but...
As EZS and EZY are two different companies, I heard that you have to do a new selection with EZS, quit EZY and sign a new contract wih EZS.
Furthermore I heard upgrading can take a long time in EZS (very little movement as few people quit EZS) so itīs only an attractive option if you already are captain. I guess that being a DE captain in EZS will not make you very popular with the FOīs that are waiting for a command.
Besides all of the above, can anyone tell me how it works to live and work in Switzerland as they are not part of the EU? Does one need a workingpermit?

I'm not sure that you do need a work permit as such, as I understand it you need to get a residence permit if you are going to stay longer than 6 months. Provided you are going to be employed for over 12 months, you get granted a five year residence permit and for employment up to 12 months a residence permit is granted for the length of the employment.

EZS and not EZY will operate from BSL and it is expected that locals will be offered an opportunity unless no other choices EZS will take nationals !
Switzerland is not currently a really good place for aviation employees since massive dismissal have and will occur at the great Swiss carrier...
I hope as national to have a chance to be offered a seat in my small country while it is a fact that beeing Swiss (and not beeing part of EU) despite the bilaws is not very advantageous in those time to help to find a job.
Try to find a job in France for example and you will see the unions coming to break your knees...and thanks to the immigration office who is useless to protect their citizen in EU.
I am not at all against foreigners to work and live in Switzerland,
I am just hoping not to be discriminated in my own country...

airmen - you will find that there are already a number of Swiss pilots working here in the UK and some of them for EZY - I flew with an excellent one the other night. What the European pilots want is the ability to work in Switzerland on the same terms. I am not aware of any limitations on Swiss pilots working in Europe and I hope that none will be placed on European pilots working there.
EZS are effectively operating as another company entirely from EZS. From my perspective I see unnecessary and restrictive employment practices in place there that are not operating at EZY. This is a great opportunity to address those problems and I hope EZY management do not shy away from the need to sort the situation out. We are not in the business of shoring up the rights of Swiss pilots against those of the other European pilots.

Confusion over EZS or EZY.
There are still different opinions floating around within EZY about whether BSL will be operated by EZS or EZY.
So far there has been no official statement/email from easyJet, apart from that BSL will be the next base and that the route network still has to be announced.
Could it be that this īconfusionī over whether EZS or EZY operates BSL is because easyJet probably does not want to pay for type changes of 737 rated pilots as BSL will be an Airbus base?
Will EZY prefer to recruit new TRSS pilots (who pay for their own type) assign them to BSL and then announce BSL will be operated by EZY, thus cutting out the 737 rated pilots?

It would appear BSL will be run by the Swiss. There are vacancies for FOs in both GVA and BSL. To move you will have to resign from the EZY contract and go onto the Swiss one, although time in EZY will be credited.
