Have relatives flying this Sunday on Monarch to Maldives (on hols). Rest of family worried. Anyone have website or Monarch Ops number to confirm flight arrival there? (and departure time on return following Sunday). Maldives Airport site does not give live flight arrivals/departures.Thanks. Your help appreciated.

Hi,

I would imagine that the flight will most likely be cancelled unfortunately. But don't take my word, please pass these numbers on as these are the tour operators MON fly to MLE for and at that, they recommend calling them:

Cosmos - 0161 489 3465

Kuoni - 01306 747 012

Thomas Cook -01274 387 634

I am booked to go to the Maldives with Kuoni (via Monarch) on the 9th Jan. Been keeping updated mostly by Kuoni's website: www.kuoni.co.uk

Anyone who feels they shouldnt go to the Malidives and wants to 'give' their ticket to me, feel free to send me a PM.

In the travel section of The Times is gives a Hotel Update of how they are coping!

If anyone hasnt a copy and wants me to have a look, give me a shout.

Personally I would find it very uncomfortable lazing around in the sunshine whilst not far away, thousands of people have been wiped out by this tragedy.....Think I'll get a refund and send a donation!

Most Maldivan islands are fully operational as is the Airport. The last thing the locals would want is people cancelling holidays. The islands depend overwhelmingly on tourism and the best way to support them would be to carry on with your plans as long as your Island is not affected.

Mrs. OddOne was berating the holiday companies for continuing to advertise on the telly, even for holidays miles away from the affected region.

I agree with the consensus on this thread; the only way many of these communities can begin to rebuild their shattered lives is with the support of the tourism industry, so don't feel guilty, enjoy your well-earned break.

It was good to see Emirates advertising a selection of far east destinations, specifically mentioning Gatwick as the starting point for these flights.

Cheers,
The Odd One

IMHO the best thing to do notwithstanding the terrible disaster is when the infrastructure can cope with it to keep going to the area.

Friends have just returned from the Maldives, they arrived there on the 25th Dec to be hit by 2 tidal waves on the 26th. They suffered some property loss and inconvenience and also witnessed some distressing sights.

As they were leaving, the resort staff were very concerned would they be coming back to the Maldives? The whole economy of the Maldives and that of many itinerant workers from Sri Lanka and other countries in the region depends entirely on visitors.

Many have suffered dreadfully, the wounds will never heal entirely, support these areas in the best way possible when they are operational again.

I still plan to go down again as I have every 2 years. So long as the islands are there, I will be too. I'm currently planning a trip to Sri Lanka with a UK based relief agency. I've volunteered my services to them for a few weeks. The infrastructure must be rebuilt otherwise they will, in the case of the Maldives, sink literally.

Thumbs up

Hi all, my wife and I flew to the maldives on honeymoon on the 3rd of jan and got back this morning. Although we had some concerns over going there given the recent events, we were reassured by the resort staff (Meedhupparu) that the resort was fully operational, that Male airport was likewise and that the best thing we could do to help and support them was to continue with our planned visit.
We are so relieved that we took their advice as the situation (at that location at least) was exactly as they described. Our honeymoon was wonderfull and the quiet dignity of the maldivians and Sri lankans we met has made a deep impression on both of us. Their tourist industry is vital and should be supported.
None of the foregoing however should obscure the real damage and loss of life that has occured, and I offer my deepest sympathies to those affected..

Mark and Christine.

ps
can anyone tell me the reasoning that have led to Monarch cancelling one of their A330s on that route, and where they have redeployed it to?

The reasoning I believe is that many people have cancelled holidays or have chosen to go to alternative destinations. Therefore two A330 flights are not needed. The decision would not have been made by Monarch but by the tour operators who sell the flight.
