I couldn't resist posting this from another thread, with apologies to the original poster!

IAS Cargo's Britannias in the '70s only had a very smelly Elsan down the back.

One of the local ground staff in Nairobi had the happy task of emptying it and he was telling me one day how amazed he was that us white folk could sh1t so neatly into "those little bags".

They were, of course, used tea bags. Seemed a shame to dissolution him!

When the Nation Airline crashes, and leaves their scrap metal on the the runway for 3 days. The news paper reports that the charter company you work for was actually the Airline involved with the crash!!!!

KAG 11th Sep 2009 08:27

I cannot beleive there is a thread like that on PPrune.
I guess 99% of the posters are not born in Africa right? Makes easier to bitch I guess...
And for the ones saying it should be taken with a grain a salt, that is just humor, remember, humor is always easier when the subject of the thread is not the country you were born, or when you are not the target.

Alright what do I know, I am not african. I just imagine what they would feel reading that.
I wouldn' t like it.

Bla Bla Bla 11th Sep 2009 08:32

kag,

Calm down mate, like people have said before its not a dig if anything it just reminiscing.

KAG 11th Sep 2009 09:14

kag,

Calm down mate
I am perfectly calm. I was just wondering about this thread.
I don' t say you are wrong or right, I just tell you what I feel. Honnestly. Calmly.

I read some post about african women, I read the word "monkey" several times, and this kind of saying would put in jail an american or european politician.
I know you guys are not politicians, and you may have a hard time, still, what I read in some of the post here is border line.
Being the truth, or humor is not the point, but some individuals may get angry by reading your thread.
Maybe the issue you encounter in this continent could be explained in a more gentleman manner, especially when we understand you guys are the civilised, organized, smart ones. Sure it won' t be that funny, but this is the price to pay when you are the supposedly educated and civilized one ;)

My point is having been rised and educated in a rich country and at the same time bitching on a poor continent in which you accept to work for personnal reasons is asking too much to destiny.
You are educated? You cannot be bribed? You smell good and eat healthy food? Well be happy about that and don' t make fun of the ones not having your chance.

CJ750 11th Sep 2009 09:21

Kag have you flown in Africa at all. Maybe come and experience the continent and its idiosincicies (spelling ??) and you will understand what we are reminiscing about. :E:E

Bla Bla Bla 11th Sep 2009 09:55

"My point is having been rised and educated in a rich country"

Really I wish I had been RISED as well as you Kag!

KAG 11th Sep 2009 09:59

Well, I went there many years ago, for a peace mission with the military.

What I have seen there was HIV, poor peasants, high crime rate, victims, civil war, and nothing to bitch about or making fun of. It was just sad. I still remember having seen one huge tent full of dying people. Won' t tell you the details.
However I was in a poor country, center of africa, my experience is maybe different than yours.
And as I said this is what I feel. I didn' t say you are not having a hard time.

I am just not comfortable with the way this thread talks and makes fun of the african work condition.

I could be wrong, or maybe too "politically correct" on that one. But I had to say it.

superserong 11th Sep 2009 11:35

Cry me a river!

Kag

I think a lot of guys/girls on this thread have spent a very long time in all the "poor countries" in Africa (oh...most of us were born and raised here). Tents full of dying people, planes full of "spares" and weird new holes on pre-flight. Get over it. This thread is intended to search for the humor in the sometimes less than ideal situations this beautiful continent can throw at us. Join in the fun or go start another money-grabbing NGO.:}

Fly Safe!

KAG 11th Sep 2009 12:13

I have said what I wanted to say.

I have nothing more to add.

Fly safe.

jab 11th Sep 2009 14:29

I am from Africa, have flown over a good deal of the continent, I have seen, heard of or experienced a lot of these events as described and this is one of my favorite threads on PPrune. Too many like KAG think this thread is mocking Africa and Africans, I don't take it that way. I generally have a smile on my dial reading the different entries and shake my head knowingly, brings back a lot of memories.

I landed in a village in West Africa and one of the local soldiers was wearing a gas mask, over his head with the eyepieces all fogged up! Must have been 35 degrees outside with way over 90% humidity but he thought he looked cool, I have a photograph of him somewhere.

Once had to fly a live calf because they wanted to slaughter it Halaal when it got to the destination. Its legs were tied and it was quite docile but then one of the dinner guests hauled the calf out the back and let it fall onto the ground from about 3 feet up, after all it was going to die so why be kind to it? The guy never did figure out why our flight engineer gave him a roundhouse slap to the ear.

President was given a live goose as a gift by a village so one of his flunkies strolls up to stuff it into the baggage compartment of the helicopter, notwithstanding the luggage already in there and that it must have been about 50 degrees plus in that hole. After I mentioned that it was not a good idea he just strolled over to another helicopter and shoved the goose into that baggage compartment, problem solved in his eyes.

When contacting the tower for the wind, was given 270/5 despite a howling wind out of the NE. Queried him a few times and eventually did my own thing. Went to the tower and asked him if he could see the windsock and where he got his data from? Reply was showing me the METAR from last week.

No other place quite like Africa, both the good and the bad things.

non iron 11th Sep 2009 21:49

Kag, one of the things that has stayed with me over the years is the local, UK approved, medical examiner signing my certificate and asking if l would be so good as to take his money and deposit it in a UK bank on my next visit home. On first meeting.

At that time 500,000 kids a year under the age of 12 were dead through malaria alone in Nigeria, the recorded ones ( if we can believe the records ).
The oil companies made a fortune, the powers that be made a fortune, the kids had no schools. Would these robbers want to educate people
or keep them in the dark ?

Buggered if l know.

mtoroshanga 12th Sep 2009 08:02

You know your in Africa when you've flown for 90 minutes without seeing a soul and are dying for a dump so land for one, just as you get going you realise you are the centre of interest for about a thousand people, watching with rapt attention.

And KAG I was brought up in Africa and have flown there from Cape Town to Djibouti Nd my girlfriend is a Nigerian as are some of my best most trusted friends.

non iron 14th Sep 2009 19:36
