Problem with fuel supply @ O.R.Tambo
Bring on 2010!

"URGENT!!
Dear Airline Colleagues
Please refer to the e-mail below from Mr Dave Scagell, Area Operations Manager, Chevron.
As mentioned below, the supply of jet fuel to OR Tambo International Airport is currently disrupted due to logistical issues related mainly to the transport of jet from the coast to OR Tambo Airport – in particular rail tank car supply has become erratic. Attempts are being made to augment this supply with additional pipeline slugs but the benefit will not immediately be realized.
In an effort to avoid possible fuel rationing, you are all therefore requested with immediate effect to take necessary measures to reduce jet fuel uplifts at OR Tambo International Airport. This is a request to you all to implement a voluntary reduction in jet fuel uplift at OR Tambo International Airport with the goal to achieve a 30% reduction in uplift amongst all carriers. Should this not be achieved and the transport problems not be resolved, the Consortium will have no option but to consider rationing of jet fuel from the beginning of next week. The Consortium will be able to monitor the efforts taken by the airlines independently to reduce fuel uplifts at OR Tambo. Should it be necessary, an urgent meeting of all airlines will be called at short notice to discuss the problem and fuel rationing requirements. Daily updates will be forwarded through.
Your cooperation and assistance in this regard will be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards"

Does this kind of lack of planning happen at "real airports"? Seems this is the third time in two years. Is the reserve too low or is the fuel farm too small? You define "real airport". Don't ask me to.

How could they have a request like this. Most Airline are already taking Min fuel. what do they want BA/SAA/VS and all the bigg boys to da a tech stop.
Sounds like bad planning or maybe we need a bigger fuel farm in FAJS.

Yeah sure, we'll take 30% less fuel. Will you guys pay for our tech stop then? Only in Joburg.... 3 aircraft at the holding point and we have congestion at the holding point, expect 30 minutes delay. Marshaller's running away while guiding you in.... ORTIA is a bad joke. 2010 here we come!

Seems more like a transportation issue. Planning not going to help you if you can get the product from the coast to the airport.
So on a related note is this a temporary problem with the railways or is there a general decline in infrastructure reliability?
Will be interesting to see what will happen during the world cup if such problems continue.

A funny thing happened a few years ago in country not too far from here...
Legislation went to the birds, Government followed shortly thereafter.....
Farm invasions (publisised....(sp))
Comments along the lines of "It'll never happen here.... because of......."
Hmmm......
I hate to say it boys and girls.... It's happening! Right here, right now!
Rand vs Dollar pegged at 7-point something....."Oooo we have all these ships and planes to pay for... and now you want to build all these stadiums????? Oh, okay then"
Get real people..... this is the "lay of the land".
Like it, or lump it. A bit like being employed in The Dune State....
The choice is yours.... acting like you didn't see it coming is no arguement. Hind-sight is indeed a wonderful thing.. but you really must step into reality sometime!
Free-choice people.... whinging isn't going to help. I promise you....
Been there, done that.
