If licence and experience is not a problem......
Anyone want part time Dornier 228, Emb 110 or King Air 200 pilot, South Africa/Botswana for November to April?

D-OCHO 29th Sep 2008 14:29

I could not help noticing a post above in which someone claiming a total time of 3850 hours claims to have 1650 hours of instrument time.

As a rule of thumb instrument time is normally between 5% and 10% of total time, depending on where one is flying. Anything much above the 10% level would be most unusual and would require some explaining. Any resume with such numbers is likely to go straight in to the garbage can. What’s the point of posting figures such as those mentioned?
European Law states any flight on a Instrument Flight Plan you can log as IF time even if the complete flight is done in VMC conditions.

Was also strange for me but who argues with the law when I came back to Europe after training in the U.S. where you can only log IF time in actual IMC. /:}:D

Der absolute Hammer 29th Sep 2008 16:33

IF time in log book? Reality time is time for let down.
If all flying done in South Africa then I take, for interview assess, 1/4 total time and 10 minutes for each hour. So..if TT = 4,000hrs, then 1/4 = 1,000hrs and 10mins/hr = 10,000minutes = 167hrs. With 167 hrs of let down practice, pilot should be pretty good. So..if he cannot fly let downs well with airmanship, then rest of log book hours are suspected. Therefore, no job. Damned simple.

Jobs in South Africa

Hey Guys,

I've been reading through the posts in this forum the last little while and I'm thinking South Africa might be a good fit for my next adventure. I was hoping you guys could give me the low down on the current job scene out there. I've got 1500 TT, 200 PIC, 1200 ME Turbine, currently flying SIC DHC6. Flown in North America, Asia and a bit of the Middle East. Do you think I'd have a decent shot of scoring a job or would it be wise to wait until I have a little more time before I head out there on the job hunt?

Cheers

Speaking about the forum...

I am currently rated Captain on the C212, 1500 TT logged, portuguese ATPL, been flying for Portuguese Air Force till now. Some experience in Africa. Flown essentially in S Tome and Principe (I know it is not Africa actually), but been to Dakar, Niamey, Bamako, Nouahdibou, Lome, Accra, Libreville and Port Gentil. Know something about living and flying in Africa. But still would love to make a living there. Do I stand a chance with an outfit in Africa?

Thank you very much for the replies.

Cheers!

I was looking at heading to Tanzania in a couple of weeks but a buddy of mine out there is saying things are starting to look bleak at the moment. I'm still planning on showing my face but is this economic thing in the states affecting everything in Africa?

2400 TT, 1800 PIC, 1300 Turbine, 1000 Multi Turbine and 500 MTPIC
Have both Canadian and American ATP licenses.

Any other suggestions for where to look. Doesn't need to have 2 engines on it either.

Low timer Jobs

Hey..

I have done my Comm. with FAA ME IR and have TT 260. I'm still lukin for that first job :ugh: If some of the members could help me out here and please share the info regarding any openings for low timers... whether it is P2 job or instruction.. it doesnt matter right now.. we can be debating all day long whether u should fall for P2 jobs or increase your hours first.. but the base line right now is that.. fetch whateva u get. and hang on in aviation.. ( For Low timers ofcourse :})

So please share some info.. and before someone tells me to do my own research.. I hv already done tht.. and Botswana was the one where i got some leads.. but still trying on that.. any info will be appreciated..

Thanks
:ok:

Propellerpilot 19th Dec 2008 11:43

That is not how it works - if there are openings, the ones that are there in person will be the ones with chances. By the time you get there, the job will already have been taken. So the only way to do it in this region of the world is to show up and stick around like everybody else. But even that has been said a thousand times in this forum. Positions are generally not advertised, there is no need for companies to do that, as there are always enough low-timers sticking around to get in.

Anyone looking for DHC-6 captains??

Hi guys

Just got notice from my employer a couple of weeks ago that at the moment they do not have enough work to keep me busy as a freelance captain on the twotter.

I have five years on the beast accumulating ~2200 hrs, ~1300 of them from the left seat. My TT is 5200 hrs. For the last three years or so I have been flying for both the Red Cross in Sudan, and various oil companies in Algeria.

I also have experience from the Caribbean.

I'm only looking for a rotational contract (4 wks on/ 4 wks off or similar) to keep wife somewhat happy.

If the conditions are right I would be open to do SIC work too. Tough times requires tough measures :(.

Any leads would be highly appreciated..

FT

Gooneybird 5th Feb 2009 03:56

With those hours you could try CHC (Canadian Helicopter Company). I take it you're ex-Zimex? They laying guys off at the moment?

alpha-b 5th Feb 2009 11:16

Hey mate!
Just try CHC there might be a slot available on the left seat on twin otters current operations being Cameroon and Chad on 6 weeks on and off

FlyTCI 5th Feb 2009 21:31

Gooney, things seem to have slowed down quite a bit lately for us. Even guys on permanent contract are told there is no job for them at the moment.

We had to pull out of Libya due to a diplomatic conflict between Switzerland and Libya. There are also a couple of contracts expiring around summer that they don't know if they will be renewed.

I know a lot of people are happy over the low oil price, but for us in the oil business it's killing us. Wife is in the same business so I can only hope her company will pull through this.

Here's to higher oil prices soon :ok: :).
