Post The Campfire

This is a trial thread which can be used by African Aviators to shoot the breeze on matters non-African or non-Aviation. Sometimes, as we know, it's easier to chat about things with folk of your own kind rather than put it to the world.

Go for it - it'll probably be a huge pot of things but there will be no restriction on whether the topic has bearing to our forum or not.

If you think it's a kak idea tell me.

Fantastic - I renew my subscribtion

Have a look at www.voetsek.co.uk and www.marulatree.co.uk - both has Afrikaans sites on them where ONLY Afrikaans get spoken. Both went on trail and BOTH stuck as it was a hughe success. Not saying we must just have ONLY Afrikaans ... ok Bert ok .... wifey can teach you ...

Both also has an "open" section for blasting of all sorts, sex, toys, nature... TOURISM .... NEWS of the day ... all important things for any pilot !

GREAT Idea 4HP - go for it please.

While today is ... uhmm TODAY ...here is a good one 4 u

Shock findings by the Institute for Global Warming and Sea Level Changes have revealed that much of the Cape Flats and the Fish Hoek valley will be submerged within 20 to 30 years as sea levels rise with global warming.

The report, which was leaked to the Cape Times, has been kept under wraps for fear of creating panic and causing havoc with property prices.

Compiled by leading international climate-change experts, the study says sea levels could rise as much as 3m worldwide in the next 20 to 30 years.

This will have devastating consequences for many low-lying countries. In Cape Town it would result in the flooding of the Cape Flats and turn Table Mountain and the southern section of the peninsula into an island.

Many residents in the northern suburbs will have seafront properties
The Fish Hoek-Noordhoek valley will also be partially submerged, connected by a small land bridge in the centre of the valley.

The Foreshore, Green Point, Mouille Point and Milnerton will be under water, as well as much of the Hout Bay valley, the Strand and Gordon's Bay.

Many residents in the northern suburbs will have seafront properties.

The report is expected to cause chaos in the real estate and insurance businesses.

On Monday the Cape Times established that several authorities were aware of the findings of the report and had commissioned confidential studies to plan for the inundation.

Robben Island, one of Cape Town's most historic landmarks, will be completely submerged
The Western Cape government is planning a series of workshops next year to inform the public about the sea level changes, and the predicted sea floodlines are expected to be published in the Government Gazette next year.

A spokesperson for the City of Cape Town said on Monday its planning department had commissioned an urgent study into the effects of the sea level changes on the metropolitan transport system.

"We're considering whether it is more feasible to build a channel linking Table Mountain to the mainland, similar to the one linking France and the UK, or whether a suspension bridge is a better option. Whichever is chosen it is expected that it will be a toll road and tariffs will be around R100 a one-way trip."

Nevil Gation from Portnet said the toll fees could be used to help finance a drawbridge so that ships could sail between Table Mountain and the mainland.

The city council will have to review the entire property rates and taxes system, Ann Plott, of the city's planning department, said on Monday.

Robben Island, one of Cape Town's most historic landmarks, will be completely submerged. The department of arts, science, technology and culture has commissioned a feasibility study to turn the site into a world-class scuba diving trail.

The good news is that rising sea levels will also create a change in wave patterns, resulting in Hout Bay, Bellville and Stellenbosch becoming some of the world's premier surfing spots. - Staff Writer

Wink 1st April

Since it is the 1st of April, there is still someone with a sense of humor. Seen today in The Repuplikein, Newspaper in Windhoek, Namibia.

http://www.republikein.com.na/conten...l/01_april.php

For all the non-afrikaans speakers, it is a report of a road around Windhoek being closed for the transport of landmine resistant vehicles to be transported via Walvis Bay to the Al Faw Bübiyan harbour in Iraq. Business owners are also urged in the spirit of national reconciliation to pay workers double pay if they do not turn up for work in time. 26 Oil boreholes at Al Nö Wh're will be the payment for the first 210 vehicles. Then is stil a further 290 vehicles that will have to be delivered.

Old Uncle Sam will be very happy to see that his army can get rid of so many vehicles and still have enough left to defend the country!

Here's one....

According to iafrica.com a bloke who was attacked and robbed at an ATM and managed to shoot the attackers has been arrested for murder. Now one would think that killing someone would have to be premeditated to count as murder but obviously not according to the geniuses in the SAPS. This is the same crowd who have drafted the new firearm laws making it just about illegal to own a licenced firearm while doing sod all about the huge amount of illegal and unlicenced firearms that the criminal element has in it's possession. They've even "had to" destroy the remaining stock of R1 (FN-FAL copy) rifles owned by the military and the police as whole armouries were being emptied by the brothers in crime to aid them in the arduous task of robbing cash in transit vehicles.

Holy cupcake, Batman, where does it all end?

Talking Drunk German pilots get the boot and a fine

Helsinki - The German captain of a Lufthansa passenger jet was on Monday handed a 60-day suspended sentence by a Finnish court for preparing to take off while inebriated at the airport in Helsinki on December 20.

The Vantaa district court also slapped the airplane's co-pilot with a fine equal to 40 days of his pay, in accordance with Finnish law.

The two risked sentences of up to two years in jail.

Police, alerted by airport personnel about the pilots' animated state, stopped the pair in the cockpit of a Lufthansa Boeing 737 passenger jet as they were preparing for take-off.

Tests later showed that the captain had a blood-alcohol content of 0,61 promille, and the co-pilot 0,34 promille. All pilots face a mandatory 24-hour ban from consuming alcohol before flying an airplane.

Lufthansa sacked the pair in January and their pilot licences were revoked. - Sapa-AFP

Thumbs up Now this is lekker!!!!

4HP,

Congratulations is definately in order for this one. Excellent!!

I'm sure we'll get enough wood posted here to keep THE CAMPFIRE going. In addition, to get my daily ration of bumph I will now visit the Jet Blast forum less.

Gunsss, what's with the picture in the Lufthansa post? I'm sure I recognise the lady in question but fail to connect it to the post - must be the influence of me reading too much Huisgenoot causing a slowdown in my assimilation ability.

Man beheaded in booze row

Manila - A 39-year-old man was beheaded by his drinking buddy in the Philippines over an argument on the right amount of liquor to be poured in a glass they were sharing, a police officer said on Tuesday.

Chief Inspector Noel Raquero said Pascual Fernandez died instantly after he was hacked to death late on Sunday by Danilo Yuson in Antipolo City, just east of Manila.

Raquero said Yuson and Fernandez, together with three other friends, were on a drinking spree when the incident occurred.

"After downing several bottles of gin, Yuson accused the victim of pouring less gin in the glass they were all sharing when it was his turn to drink," he said. "A heated argument ensued but their friends pacified them."

Raquero said Yuson quickly left his buddies but returned after a few minutes carrying a jungle bolo. The suspect, who was later arrested by police and charged with homicide, hacked the victim without warning. - Sapa-DPA

Angel 4 SA vlieëniers help in Irak

Me.

Angel Blackhawk and FA-18 down

Yo flyboy .... here is the latest casualties. "Fortunately" not blue on blue this time !

I pressume we are going to have a lot of dead people from today towards the weekend's end ...

As-Saliyah, Qatar - Two American aircraft have been shot down over Karbala in southern Iraq, with the loss of at least seven soldiers.

An American FA-18 Hornet has been shot down by an Iraqi surface-to-air missile and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter was shot down, killing seven soldiers on board.

The Hornet was the first US jet downed by the Iraqis since the Gulf War in 1991.

"A US Navy FA-18, a single-seat aircraft off of the USS Kitty Hawk, went down at approximately 22:45", said a statement released at Centcom's forward operating base in Qatar.

"The name of the pilot is being withheld pending notification of next of kin," the statement added.

The US Army Blackhawk helicopter was shot down in Iraq on Wednesday, but there were conflicting reports between the Pentagon and US central command on the number aboard and the number dead.

A Defence Department official said, "There were 11 on board. Preliminary reports say seven were killed."

The four survivors were probably picked up in a rescue operation, the official added.

However, a report of the incident posted on central command's website said only six were aboard the Blackhawk troop transporter, adding, "casualties have not been confirmed at this point...The cause of the crash is being investigated."

The Pentagon said the Blackhawk was apparently downed by small arms fire near the city of Kerbala, south of Baghdad.

Central command said the helicopter was on "an operational mission" when it crashed.

The Kerbala region was the site of heavy fighting on Wednesday and early Thursday as US troops moved to within just 50 kilometres of Baghdad, surging north in a major offensive that Pentagon officials said had left Iraq's key Republican Guard divisions in tatters.

Iraqi forces tried to counterattack but were repelled by coalition forces.

Helicopters have been at the centre of several deadly incidents during the war in Iraq.

Nineteen US and British servicemen were killed in the first two days of the conflict in helicopter accidents in the Gulf region.

Three Americans were killed and one was injured when a UH-1 Huey helicopter went down last Sunday.

The Iraqis claim to have shot down several Apache attack helicopters.

Cool THE 4TH DIMENSION

Hello Fellow African Campers,

Well, seeing as I’m at THE CAMPFIRE, having cancelled my subscription to magazines of lesser quality and not visiting JET BLAST so frequently anymore , I sit staring into the fire burning in various colours of hot. I look at the burning embers, hear them crackling and am aware of the night noises only found in Africa.

I am content with life as I also happened to have a cold frosty in my hand . I think about abstract things. Dimensions and a lot of other things I do not think I really understand. The 4th dimension comes to mind . I think about and remember days many moons back when I very actively manipulated (only but just sometimes) the flight controls of a flying machine to make it play around it’s three axis. We mortals are very lucky to be able to play with the three dimensions more than anybody else on earth. Up, down, left, right, forward and, especially for the chopper guys, backwards .

Every time we finish playing with the three dimensions we write certain numbers in a little book. The numbers written therein plays a vital role in the lives of those of us who carry on to make flying a full time profession. So what do we write down and what does it take to play with the three dimensions? Time!

Time is thus the 4th dimension and not some mumbo-jumbo or computer database software or something ‘out there’. Without time we can do nothing with the three dimensions we so love playing with. Without time we can not sit at the campfire with a cold frosty thinking about the good and the bad times long gone by. Time IS the 4th dimension.

heh heh...Bakela the Fist...have another dop there...but stop if you find a black hole!!!

Speaking of the Iraqis shooting down F18's, did you know that a MiG-25PD recorded the only Iraqi air-to-air kill of the Gulf War? It dropped an F-18C on the first night of the war--then went on to fire another missile at an A-6 and buzz an A-7, all while avoiding escorting F-14s and F-15s.
An isolated incident? How about the single Iraqi Foxbat-E that eluded eight sweeping F-15s then tangled with two EF-111As, firing three missiles at the Ravens and chasing them off station. Unfortunately, the Ravens were supporting an F-15E strike, and the EF-111's retreat led to the loss of one of the Strike Eagles to a SAM. The Foxbat easily avoided interception and returned safely to base.

There's more. When F-15 pilots were fighting for the chance to fly sweeps east of Baghdad late in the war, itching for a chance to get a shot at an Iraqi running for Iran, they weren't expecting the fight that a pair of Foxbats put up. Two Foxbats approached a pair of F-15s, fired missiles before the Eagles could get off shots (the missiles were evaded by the Eagles), then outran those two Eagles, four Sparrows and two Sidewinders fired back at them. Two more Eagles maneuvered to cut the Foxbat's off from their base (four more Eagles tried, but were unable to effect an intercept), and four more Sparrows were expended in vain trying to drop the Foxbats.

The Iraqis had a total of twelve MiG-25PDs at the beginning of the war, of which maybe half were operational at any given time. Imagine what trouble they would have caused if there had been more. The Foxbats, when well flown, proved capable of engaging allied fighters and avoiding them at will. Only the limitations of their weapons proved a problem.

Have there been any reports at all of Iraqi fighters this time round? And how would a pair of F15's cope if they were set upon by say, eight or ten Migs at once?

Snoop Yar well no fine.....

AfricanSkies,

Gave up on the dop when the fire died but, by that time I decided that I will rather keep myself busy with something else as I could not properly co-ordinate the first three dimensions. Kept on toppling over or something similar to that.... Decided there and then I will now work on the 5th dimension. Don't know what it is yet but working on it.

On a more sober note, as for the question on the Iraqi AF, heard from some or other Janes military analist on the wireless this morning that they only had about 130 combat ready aircraft at the start of the war and that most were taken out on the ground very quickly - a la six day war. The few that managed to get airborne since were apparently severly dealt with just after take-off. I cannot substantiate it but that's what I heard.

Flutter By, like your thought and will try to get something going . Will have to be careful though not to compromise identities and so forth and so on.

Devil Indian Jet crashes (again)

I asked an Indian friend to comment on allegations that Indian Pilot's always crashes into residential houses ... his comments

" ... hey C... mon .. yo know mon we have more poepel (people) than air in India ... "

India - At least three people were killed and two dozen injured on Friday when an Indian air force fighter jet crashed into three houses in the northern state of Punjab, the air force said.

The pilot ejected safely from the Russian-designed MiG-23 fighter which was on a routine mission when it hit the houses in the village of Mullanpua, 100km north-west of of the state capital, Chandigarh.

"About two dozen people received burn injuries. Several others are trapped in the debris and the exact number of injured and dead will only be known after the debris is cleared," an air force spokesperson told Reuters. He had no further details.

Cranes were brought in to lift the wreckage of the single-seater plane from the houses that were reduced to rubble as firefighters brought the blaze under control.

It was the third time since mid-2002 that an Indian combat jet has crashed into residential areas in the state. Last July, a MiG-21 ploughed into houses in Jalandhar, killing seven people on the ground. In November, a British-made Jaguar crashed into houses in Ambala, killing four people.

India's air force, the world's fourth largest, has come under criticism for a woeful safety record. Defence officials say at least 170 Russian-made MiG combat planes have been lost in accidents over the past decade.

Some Funnies

Long, long time ago, an Impala (Aermacchi 326 or also known as an Imp in SA) squadron was stationed at a civilian airport alongside a light transport squadron flying single piston engined taildraggers.

Of course, being what they are, the light aircraft pilots had a very good rapport with the civvy ATC’s at the airport and the jet jocks always came of second – well almost always. This was mostly due to conspiracies formed between ATC and light aircraft drivers in the airport pub at night.

On a specific morning a flight of 4 Imps were taxiing out for a rocket delivery training sortie when (lets call the flight “Brats”) the radio comms went something like this...

“Tower, Brats”
“Brats, good morning. QNH 1013, taxi holding point 08L. Call ready for departure”
“1013, 08L, Brats copied”
A short while later…
“Tower, Brats”
“What now?”
“Rough time check”
“Tuesday”

A shorter while later, four Imps at the holding points doing all the checks and cross-checks only jet jocks have to do, toggles, switches, armed, not armed, safe, unsafe etc… Takes ages. Civvy King Air on a charter now behind Imps and ready to go. Waiting in constipation when…

“Tower, can Brats expedite…I’m paying for my own fuel”
Five second silence…then a reply from Brats’ flight leader…
“Don’t worry mate, you’re paying for ours as well”

Eventually, 4 Imps now lined up on runway cleared for streamer take-off when…

“Tower, Brats”
“Yeeesss! What Now!”
“There’s Guinea-fowl on the runway”
Immediately - reply from tower…
“You’ve got rockets don’t you”
