Gulfstream down in Kenya

I know its on the main board but belongs here too.

BBC have been reporting a Gulfstream has gone down after clipping Powerlines after T/O. (G1?)

So far reports indicate crew didnt make it and some Ministers on board as well.
Sad news.
Anyone know if it was Flamingo or a Wilson Operator?

There by the grace......

Red face Kenyan minister killed in crash

Nairobi - A plane carrying four Kenyan government ministers crashed on take-off on Friday in the western part of the country, killing one of them and injuring two.

Labour Minister Ahmad Mohammed Khalif died along with two pilots in the crash in the town of Busia, Internal Security Minister Chris Murungaru told a news conference on Friday night in Nairobi.

The light plane was gaining speed for take-off when it hit a pothole on the runway, lost control and crashed into an electrical pole, Murungaru said. He said eight passengers and two crew were on board for the chartered flight to the city of Kisumu.

Witnesses claimed the plane took off, but failed to gain height and clipped electrical cables before crashing, Nation Radio reported.

Information Minister Raphael Tuju was seriously hurt in the crash, but was out of danger, Murungaru said.

Water Minister Martha Karua was slightly injured while the minister of state in the vice-president's office, Linah Jebii Kilimo, was uninjured. Two other members of parliament were also injured.

The Flying Doctors air ambulance service dispatched a plane and a helicopter to evacuate the injured to hospitals in Nairobi from Busia, 360km northwest of the capital, said a spokesperson.

The ministers have been on the job for only three weeks, having been sworn in after the National Rainbow Coalition swept to power in last month's general election.

They had flown from Nairobi to western Kenya to celebrate the party's victory over the Kenyan African National Union.

The crash comes with Kenya's newly-elected President Mwai Kibaki in hospital with complications from a campaign-trail car accident suffered in early December.

Airport officials in Nairobi said the aircraft belonged to leasing company African Commuter Services. Officials from the company were not immediately available for comment. - Sapa-DPA

Unhappy Immediate probe into Aircrash in Kenya

Nairobi - Kenya's newly elected President Mwai Kibaki announced on Saturday that an official investigation of a plane crash that claimed the life of his labour minister and two pilots.

The plane carrying four Kenyan government ministers crashed on take-off on Friday in the western part of the country, killing Labour Minister Ahmad Mohammed Khalif.

It was not clear why the two-motor plane failed to gain adequate height on the take-off from the west Kenyan city of Busia.

Clipped electrical cables

Internal Security Minister Chris Murungaru told a news conference Friday night in Nairobi that the light plane hit a pothole on the runway, lost control and crashed into an electrical pole. But Interior Minister Moody Awori later said the plane had not gained enough height.

"It veered off and crashed about 500 metres from the runway. It must have crashed on an abandoned or empty house," he said.

Witnesses also claimed the plane failed to gain height and clipped electrical cables before crashing, Nation Radio reported on Friday.

There were eight passengers and two crew on board for the chartered flight to the city of Kisumu.

Injured ministers out of danger

Information Minister Raphael Tuju was seriously hurt in the crash, but was out of danger, Murungaru said. Water Minister Martha Karua was slightly injured while the minister of state in the vice- president's office, Linah Jebii Kilimo, was uninjured. Two other members of parliament were also injured.

South Africa President Thabo Mbeki has extended heartfelt condolences from the government and people of South Africa to President Mwai Kibaki, the government and the people of Kenya on the passing away of Khalif while wishing the injured a speedy recovery. - Sapa-DPA

RIP

Unhappy Kenyan plane 'hit a pothole'

Nairobi - Aviation experts on Saturday began investigations to determine the cause of a plane crash in Kenya that killed Labour Minister Ahmad Mohamed Khalif and two pilots, as government officials who survived the crash recounted their ordeal.

Khalif (53) and two pilots were killed in the accident in Busia, near Kenya's border with Uganda, on Friday.

Ten survivors of the accident were admitted to Nairobi Hospital overnight, with two being taken to the intensive care unit and one taken to the high-dependency unit, surgeon J Mulimba told reporters.

The injured included Water Resources Minister Martha Karua, Minister of State in the Office of the Vice-President Linah Jebii Kilimo, Tourism and Information Minister Raphael Tuju, and member of parliament George Khaniri.

"I was among the last people to speak to the late Ahmad Mohamed Khalif," Tuju, who suffered chest and lung injuries in the crash, told reporters at Nairobi Hospital.

"He (Khalif) had delayed our flight for 10 minutes because he had gone to the mosque," said Tuju.

Rough runway

"I had a chat with the two pilots and I raised concern about the state of the runway. Two hundred metres of the one-kilometre runway was absolutely rough, but they assured me that everything would be okay. It was never to be," said Tuju, a former broadcaster.

Aviation experts has begun investigating the cause of the crash, police said.

"Accident experts from the aviation department are already at the crash site and investigations have started," said Western Provincial police officer Peter Kimanthi.

"The plane hit a pothole just before take-off, lost control, hit an electric pole and crashed into a house," National Security Minister Christopher Murungaru said.

The house, which was unoccupied, was destroyed when the plane fell on it, said a photographer.

The wreckage of Gulf Stream I twin-propeller plane was strewn over a 30-40m radius, about half a kilometre from the end of the runway, he said.

Fuel was still leaking from the two engines that were detached from the fuselage.

"I jumped out of the plane through the roof when the plane landed (crashed) and I walked to a road and got myself transport as the others were still being rescued," Tuju told reporters.

"I thought I was fine, however, when I reached the hospital I was coughing blood and having a lot of pain in my chest."

Went quiet

Kilimo, a noted women's rights campaigner, said: "At the time of the crash, I never knew what was happening because I was chatting with doctor (Wanjiru) Kihoro. Then we heard an impact. I thought the wheels had burst, but I heard people screaming and shouting."

"I prayed to God to save our lives. I heard Khalif scream 'I'm dying, I'm dying' and I told him 'No, don't say you are dying, say you are living'.

"He spoke about three times, then went quiet," she added.

The politicians were on their way back to Nairobi after attending a party in the rural residence of Home Affairs Minister Moody Awori when the accident happened.

Karua, who sustained multiple head injuries, several cuts and neck injuries, was operated on early on Saturday and was still in the hospital's high-dependency unit on Saturday afternoon, Mulimba said.

Junior justice minister Robinson Njeru Githae suffered back injuries and a fracture to the right hand, but was in good condition, said Mulimba.

Khaniri had head and abdominal injuries, but was in stable condition.

Martha Koome, the chair of the Kenyan chapter of the International Federation of Lawyers, and stewardess Josephine Mwangi suffered limb fractures and were responding well to treatment, the doctor said.

The most seriously injured passenger was Wanjiru Kihoro, the head of a non-governmental rural development organisation known as Abantu. She suffered a fractured skull and was still in the hospital's intensive-care unit on Saturday, doctors said. - Sapa-AFP

Busia
N00.27.13 E034.08.05 (threshold 13) Alt 4000ft rwy 13/31 length 1000x18m Surface Murram / grass. No windsock.

Above info from BW's FDS database. (He will know!)

From memory - Tall trees far end of 31. House on finals 31. Houses on either side. No crowd control. Large crowds, bicycles, and livestock all excited by aircraft. Buzzing just encouraged them. Bicycle track down centerline, uneven runway surface overgrown vegetation esp. at the SE end.
Not ideal in C402/404. OK in C208 if not too heavy. Crowd control more of a problem than runway IMHO.

I havent been there for a few years, so please forgive me if its all out of date!

Yes, a G1 is a Turboprop. looks like a 748. Has two dart engines. Very noisy on the ground! Forerunner of the G2 etc.

Here is what my notes on Busia Airstrip say (how about that for a limousine aircraft of the 1960s? ..):

Do not overfly Uganda. "Buzz" for people (sometime … hundreds!), bicycles (hundreds?) and animals (sometime attached to a pole for grazing … in which case your buzz won't be effective!). Call Police station (03362) 2101 or 2110 give your ETA and ask them to clear the strip (but they probably won't bother anyway). Large & uncontrolled crowds, bicycles, and livestock all excited by aircraft (repetitive clearing overshoots tend to make matter worse). No windsock (check for smoke around, but it's usually variable in direction in the surrounding area). Low houses and bush before Thr 31. Tall gum trees near Thr Rwy 13 (usually land Rwy 31 & T/O Rwy 13 unless light & STOL aircraft). Possible longitudinal washaways first 200m Rwy 31. Airstrip maintenance is absolutely nil and condition of runway can at times deteriorate to a real "messy" state (bushes and anthills!). 2002: 6 foot high termite hill right on edge (right side Rwy 31) of strip (which is now a meandering bicycle track) Get prior brieffing and inspect carefuly! Airstrip graded in January 2003.

Apparently one witness said the pilot wasn't dodging the potholes quick enough...Is this the G1 that's been sitting at Wilson with the bent prop???
Why didn't they take a Buffalo, or is that not acceptable transport for officials?? Life in Africa!

Sorry Gunship,,life in africa is lekker. Comment aimed at officials who even in a poor country need to take VIP transport where it's not required.
But having thought about it, I guess it's universal.
Runway closed for snow, hey, they close train services because of leaves on the tracks. Granted snow was heavy.

Lo PP,

Ja swaer and as you will see I have just posted ANOTHER possible scam .. eischh tx for positive people like Francois, Huey Fan, Tom, Bert etc as the industry as a whole looks so damn far from reality.

I was schocked yesterday to hear from my Brit boss re the leaves. When they stopped our train to "clean the leaves" - I dod not want to quirey anybody as I was sure I did not hear correctly.

All the best in the snow.

Cheers from sunny, dusty though - very dusty, West Africa !
