Air Nigeria Long-Haul

Just heard that Air Nigeria is concluding plans to re-launch their long haul ops next year March.
Would really be nice if they can pull it off.
Any one has any info on the details?

I wonder how much their competitor over on at the dumpy old Lagos domestic terminal played into this aircraft choice.

Heard at board meeting:

With 1930's Chicago Mafia voice, "Boys, it's like this, see... we're gunna blow this town with our A340... just like that A airline... you'll see... just like 'em, I tell ya.... we'll be the Emirates of Africa... er, Africa's Favourite Airline... ya, that's the one. It'll be swell, you'll see."

Beats me why Nigerian airlines that have tried to go intercontinental have had an uphill task breaking even, talk less of becoming profitable, while foriegn carriers like BA/VS etc considers Nigerian cities, especially Lagos as one of their most lucrative destinations.
With Emrates twice daily frequencies using equipments like 777 & A340; Lufthansa/air France/KLM etc etc, some even having multiple stops, obviously there's lots of money to be made in that country, so it,s a big wonder the local carriers like Arik/Bellview/VK cant seem to benefit from this largese.

It seems a couple of the new - but old - B733s are mostly grounded due to technical issues.

Why Not.

I would...And why not!!! After investing all that money in Air Nigeria it would be very stupid not to go LongHaul.

VirginNigeria now Air Nigeria performed reasonably well on their Lagos-London Route and also into Johburg, I am sure a lot of their passengers including myself would welcome their return on those routes. And I believe the A340-300 will do the trick for them. Dunno what the issue is with Arik...beats me.. catch my drift WhiteDove2..!!!

Concerning B733 parked on the ramp in Lagos due to lack of spares, I disagree, actually its due mostly to a lack of crew for the fleet. New crews recruited from abroad and locally starting this January due to a massive recruitment drive by their DFO whom I find to be quite a gentleman from my experience in the Nigerian aviation sector. Hopefuly they will get those aircraft off the ground in a couple of days.

Lastly concerning Mr Jimoh Ibrahim et al that, guys please sit back and take a good look at all the owners of the major airlines in Nigeria Aero, Arik etc ..even the owner of one of the oldest and most referred to Airline I gather is in jail uuurrr sorry sick in hospital I rest my case guys and I'll be watching Air Nigeria closely this coming year...might just need an Oil change meself.

By the way Happy New Year people and please always fly safe.

Well he had better wake up,the definition of AIR NIGERIA now is "TYPE AND LINE TRAINING FOR ARIK",so unless he starts a rotation,he will continue this massive recruitment endlessly.

I agree with manga, right now Air nigeria is a flight school. More and more pilots are living to Arik,Aero..just for a rotation. They are willing to leave a place that pays ontime ( ok, nigerian standard) to Arik with 2-3 weeks behind or more but, they have a way home. The sad part is, even the instructors are looking elsewhere. 2011 a lot of airlines around the world are hiring again, it will be interesting.

AOC

The transition from Virgin Nigeria to Air Nigeria is now complete. Air Nigeria's AOC has been issued.

i think it is a good idea they are starting long haul flights.
the A340 is a lovely aircraft by me to be honest....
it is good to see at least Nigeria have an airline to its name and it mean we will have a full 100% flag carrier ... do you have any idea where they will be going to??

and i dont think you should look at them as a bad company most airlines these days looking for first officers with 3000 odd hours of which they want majority to be on type!! i think its all good how air Nigeria are going for young fresh pilots out of school giving us an opportunity to experience true airline flying

Air Nigeria has a realistic vision

It's a sensible decision to go long haul, not so sure about the equipment - an a330 would have done but then how would u compete product and capacity wise with the big boys?

It's all about the interline agreements which the have with Kenya airways, Qatar, and delta?? I stand to be corrected.

And as far as young pilots, I'm one of their original young recruits so I'd have to say they should continue to do this, but obviously with stringent recruiting excercises to avoid any slip ups...

good luck to them, i think they'll give arik a real run for their money...

Arik Air route expansion

Media reports indicates Arik Air is planning 9 more routes between now & October, anyone has details of these destinations?
Against the back drop of Air Nigeria re-launching their long haul ops, it appears that this is a good development for the Nigerian aviation industry.
