erm...

...has it escaped everyone's attention that Sefofane is now training 20 of it's own fully sponsored 'local' pilots this year? (Check their website)

Maybe worth revising any optimism further Southwards (if that's possible) before getting dellusions about joining the ex-pat flying community.

Just thought I'd throw that in...

BS
not anytime soon anyways.

Any predictions on the requirements for the 2009-2010 season ?.

Thinking of heading down in Oct/Nov.

How accurate are those pay rates in the first post and how much do you reslistically need to survive down there each month ?. (need to work out if I can afford to do it with a mortgage etc to pay over here whilst I'm gone - Mrs Lj would be staying at home !!)
Requirements will still be the same.. basic CPL... hours don't really make a difference down here.
Requirements for pilots? well hard to say now, but most companies are sorted for 2010..

Pay at the mo is around 9000Pulas a month..
most of us use pretty much all of it in that month..

Judging by this page on their website, looks like Sefofane are currently recruiting flight instructors? Can anyone confirm this?

It also says that progression from instructing to charter work is possible. Has anyone got in to Sefofane through this channel?

NO at the moment

"At present we do not require pilots, but the situation in aviation at present is very fluid as a result of the volatile economic market worldwide. We may have to hire pilots at short notice."

To continue where it all started almost a year ago...

"It's that time of the year again! Coming up to hiring season in Maun"
I'll be heading to Maun in January.
Anyone else with the same crazy "passion"?

"It's that time of the year again!"

With these words started waiterpilot a year ago this thread which evolved into the best Maun info source.

And it is that time of the year again.
Is there somebody who could give a quick overview of the situation for those who've already packed and ready to go?

THX

As of August, probably unlikely on employment but then again, this is second-hand info...

I got in touch with sefofane and moremi air
both f them said they are not in need for pilots anytime soon. This is somewhat depressing.but sefofane said that some pilots are probably going to leave so their might be some vacancies coming up.
but the scene is nowhere as gud as we have over-rated it to be.

Fesh,

I heard similar too.

There is so little movement further up the food chain, that people there are staying put rather than moving on at the moment. Even people from further up the chain who are out of work, are now looking at Maun for opportunities too.

I'm giving it a miss for now, much as I'd love to go, thinking with my pilot head - It's too much of a huge gamble that I'm not prepared to take.

Sefofane jobs

There is a reason that Sefofane says pilots may be leaving.

The Sefo management has recently decided it no longer wants to honor it's employment contracts and has "asked" all of their pilots to sign a new, much less favorable contract. Despite facing possible unemployment during this recession many of the pilots are talking about not signing. These are the jobs that may be available at Sefofane this season.
All of the companies in Maun are tightening the screws due to the economic downturn, and there are a lot of unhappy pilots in town but anyone you ask in Maun will tell you Sefofane is the worst of the lot. They may have the most professional looking website but most of the information on it... The flight school, the contract work... are pure fantasy. They have an awful reputation in Maun and with their own employees which is well deserved.
There is a reason why the rest of the charter companies in town get by with 'hand shake' agreements and Sefofane has to resort to a 40,000 pula bond to keep it's pilots from leaving. Think about that carefully before signing with them.

Strange isn't it that. The original poster never got a job last year, nor did anyone else since. But to reduce terms and conditions - more pilots are needed in donkey town to achieve this.......Do you have to be a rocket scientist to work it out?

I don't know about the original poster, but I got a job in January. And in the 8 months since I was hired Mac Air hired two, Kavango hired one, and Sefo hired four pilots. Still bad odds considering at least 5 times that many people looking for jobs have come through town without any luck. I doubt more than a small hand full of jobs will come up this winter but now one really knows. IF you want to fly here and you can afford to take a huge risk than give it a shot. Just be selective about who you work for and what you sign, don't just take any job offered to you.

The original poster

He actually had some medical problems. I've exchanged a few mails with him later.

As of no one's got hired: only running through the crew list of some of the Maun based companies you'll be able to find new faces. At least two guy's who were posting here a year ago got hired in Maun in January 2009...

When I was last in Maun, the economy was great and the jobs were plentiful and my flight time was very low. Needless to say I got offered a position.

You said a select few were hired through the year despite the downturn, while 5x more rolled through. Is it that the select few had higher times, more competitive resumes?

Things have changed and my flight times have far exceeded mins (still extremely low for a US pilot)....Does this mean I'm more competitive? Worth traveling down?
