Arik Air creditors in London panic over repayments

A London – based financial institution has entered panic mode as Arik Airline, Nigeria’s newest start-up airline has shown signs that it would default in the first due payments to it leading the bank to begin looking for ways to recoup its loans said to be in the tens of millions of dollars .

It believed that the airline – ARIK Air- is owned by President Obasanjo and Governor Peter Odili of Rivers State - It has been speculated that the name “ARIK” is a combination of President Obasanjo’s middle name Aremu (“AR” ) and Governor Peter Odili’s Igbo name, Ikechuckwu (“IK” ) - ARIK airline was established in April 2006 when the Bureau of Public Enterprises in an unprecedented deal handed over properties of the old Nigeria Airways Limited to Sir Arumemi Ikhide –Johnson the infamous Chairman of Rockson Engineering Company for a paltry sum of N950 million. The new airline inherited NAL hangars, buildings especially the Murtala Airport – based headquarters building and old aircrafts.

ARIK airline without any known capital base began an aircraft buying spree especially an order with Canadian-based aircraft manufacturing company Bombardier for new aircraft worth $69 million. Late last year, not long after takeoff, the airline was rocked by raids by the EFCC which led to the arrest of its Chairman, Sir Arumemi Johnson who was accused by the EFCC as serving as a front for Governor Peter Odili of Rivers State in the massive looting of Rivers State treasury. The EFCC amongst other allegation stated in an interim report published by Saharareporters that monies belonging to Rivers State were diverted to help the airline purchase jets that were used in its operations.

Such business deals according to Saharareporters investigation were beyond what the EFCC reported, according to our investigators; ARIK Air had used funds laundered from Nigeria by top officials in Rivers State to act as collateral for several loans that we arranged in the UK.

The major concern of the financial institution is that funds may not be available to repay the loans which it describes as being in “tens of millions of pounds” especially as the EFCC clampdown seems to have slowed down the movement of funds out of Rivers State. EFCCC Chairman, Nuhu Ribadu said at a public forum in Washington DC that in December 2006 the EFCC recovered over N23 billion from Governor Peter Odili and later returned it to the treasury of the Rivers State. Saharareporters learnt that this huge amount of money was meant to be siphoned into offshore accounts to pay for ARIK Airline businesses.

Don't believe everything you read on Saharareporters.com. Besides and as someone said above, the article was published in April 2007, predicting doomsday for Arik. Where's Arik today?

Try CHC

seac,

My opinion would be to try and get a job with a well-respected company like CHC which have quite a lot of fixed wing in Nigeria now. Remember, Arik is a Nigerian company in Nigeria and if I were you, that woud give me an uneasy feeling.

How utterly arrogant, and racist. Typical of your Texas folk, as ignorant and self-centered as ever!

Do youtself a favor and visit the appropriate websites to unload your dated garbage and hatred towards Nigeria.

Which planet are you from you arrogant little ? You're the giuy who was advising pilots to join companies like Virgin and Aero (i.e. CHC) yourself only a few posts ago or have you forgotten that

Where on earth do you get the idea I'm Texas folk? What, you're Whitehaven folk - dipstick

Where have I said anything the slightest bit racist in my post? Have you read what many other people have been saying about Arik on Prune? Your assumptions of my ehtnicity and origins are totally wide of the mark . Now take a hike

Seac

I will like to add my own opinion and will advice you to go to aero or virgin Nigeria. I am a Nigerian that trained abroad as well and I am yet to come across a company that prefers to keep more aircraft on the groung than they have flying. It will be very naive of us to pretend as if this is not an abdnormal thing and everytime I pass by and see thier crjs on the ground (at any time you see at least four parked).

Most airlines I have come across recruit and train pilots prior to getting the aircrafts or schedule the crew raining in such a way that the aircrafts spend as little time on the ground as possible. My guess is its not thier money and thier backers have no aviation experience this has been confirmed by some of thier pilots that I know. However we live in a country whereby to understand some things you have suspend the part of your brain that deals with logical reasoning.

Imagine British airways having half of thier 238 aircraft or ryanair having 64 aircraft on the ground on a near permanent basis. This aircraft will have to go for checks and thier annual insurances will have to be paid. Wherever they are getting thier money from good luck to them but I am sure its not going to last forever.

Parked Arik CRJ's

I believe the reason you are seeing parked CRJ's is that the initial order of (3?) CRJ-200's have never been used in service. These aircraft have/are being sold and they will be leaving LOS.
