Lightbulb It Happens!

atedo,

we have a lot of expatriates guys flying in Naija without any probs. Please do you have a good example of such incident.
Maybe you should read up on the Rotorheads forum about the Bristow helicopter which just got hit by a bullet near Escravos (luckily no injuries). I personally know 3 Nigerians and 5 expatriates who have been hijacked and held hostage in Nigeria when hijacking was de-rigeur a few years back. I was slightly damaged during the last (unsuccessful) attempt to hijack me

Avionco has nothing to do with this contract! They have been out of there for almost a year! Check your facts!

Question New Arik Routes

Has anyone heard any information as to whether Arik will be opening a route to Douala or Yaounde from either Port Harcourt, Calabar or Lagos?

I ask the question because yet again Virgin Nigeria tried to rip off my wife on her return from Douala and she never wants to fly with them again. Just looking to see if someone other than Bellview will be operating that route (because they too rarely used to run on time).

Quick query

What is the criteria for employment on the NG.
I was initially told that no spaces on the NG only CRJ900/DASH8400
I later learnt a few people were emloyed directly onto the NG,and did not perform to well?

Hmm getting on the NG's is easy.... have a 737 type. If you are low time pilot with no jet experience you will most likely end up on the dash 8 or crj. I got put on the 733 and hope to get the NG upgrade soon. I know 90% of the 737 pilots and i dont know of any case of anyone that “did not do so well” that has lead to Arik not hiring for the ngs straight! The only factor i know off is that if you have low jet time its a 60% chance you will end up on the crj first. the reason is simple 8 out of 10 guys on the crj would like the ng. Its unfair to bring people from out side and slot them in on the Ngs except if they have previous experiance. However arik has 8 737 now expectin another 4 before the end of the year thus i would expect more slots to open up on the 737 cos the have more of them.

Alright...here we go again. It's good to know that one doesn't have to look too far to get "objective" commentary about aviation in Nigeria than to read the ignorant statements generated by a buffoon who obviously has more than a passing interest about what goes on in Lagos. If you have so much contempt for aviation in Africa in general (or Nigeria specifically) then why are you on this forum? Or does the anonymity of broadcasting your biased contempt half-way around the world from Canada give you some sense of superiority? Like people are flocking to Canada to pursue their aviation dreams...give me a break!

Arik Air, like every other startup airlines, has its growing pains and Lagos, like every other major metropolitan city in the world (with a 7 million plus population, a highly educated workforce, a thriving business/financial center, and a downtown skyline that rivals many major cities in the world), has its positives and negatives. At the end of the day its all about choice and the freedom to seek employment wherever in the world opportunities arise, and making an honest assessment as to whether one can deal with the positives/negatives of living in a particular country or working for a particular airline. I don't work for Arik but if you've got a beef with the airline or Lagos for that matter then try to articulate your reasons why in an intelligent manner on this forum and skip the childish and adolescent verbal assaults...and stop flaunting your ingorant commentary for the rest of the world to read!

Biased content!

I can tell you are a Nigerian that lives in New York. Nigerians love Lagos when they live in London or other cities. It is the toilet bowl of the world! I have to say people are a lot nicer than what you expect. A lot nicer and I mean it, but still that city sucks!

Gentlemen, There is a simple solution to the problem "dont come and work in Nigeria" let the Nigerians and those who are willing to take a risk work there. Coz I dont know Y all this holla balloo over a simple job. If your (ref to all expats) countries can run the aviation industry and airlines better Y come over, is it you all need to build hours and get experience to go back home and get real jobs.
Nigeria has problems it is not too safe but the companies provide security to/from work and at the accomodation, the pay is great (or you wont be thinking of coming), and if you dont go out to fraternise with the natives you will be safe (from what i dont know). Nowadays the Aircrafts are well maintained and refusing to fly over 100hrs is your right ( worst case you get fired!!!). All companies have cleaned up their acts to an aceptable level and I have flown with the best and worst in the country. companies always pay, a bit late sometimes but they all pay.
Cant say more, it's all up to you individually to make up your minds.

There is a saying if you have nothing good to say dont say anything.

Good luck

To WestAfricaDash8 and Westcoaster;

I guess you guys got together to discuss strategy before launching your verbal attacks. Yes I live in New York and fly internationally and have spent more than enough time in Lagos to be able to form an opinion about Nigeria and its way of life. What if I were a Nigerian that lives in New York..SO WHAT?!? I have also been been on this forum long enough to see that people like you both have turned bashing Nigeria into a full contact sport...and like many of my fellow aviator brothers (and sisters) who identify with what is good about Nigeria, are sick of the baseless and rhetorical attacks that take the negative actions of a few and make them representative of the entire country. Enough already!

It's amazing how this thread has transformed itself from an informative commentary of the pros and cons of working at Arik Air to ad hominem attacks on Nigeria and its aviation advances. Since you both seem to be reading from the same playbook (i.e. How To Criticize a Country From A Distance) it is comforting to know there are others on this forum who do have some understanding and affection for Nigeria and will not sit idly by and let you malign the country (thanks for the verbal comeback from NIJASEA and LongJohnThomas..you took the words right out of my mouth..well said!).

I'm not trying to sugarcoat the problems that are in Nigeria..they are real and tangible. Just like the same social issues and societal problems that are prevalent throughout the rest of the world but not addressed on this forum. Lagos is not New York, London, or Frankfurt...it's Lagos. A city that is making great strides in aviation (sorry if we aren't moving fast enough for you). Instead of solutions you offer criticism..instead of understanding you act sanctimonious...yet you all want to flock to the motherland looking for flying jobs and wonder why the layout of the landscape isn't to your satisfaction. So for the likes of you who have nothing to offer by way of "constructive criticism" (i.e. offer some solutions to problems you see as opposed to saying "it sucks" or "don't look for a job in that part of the world!") I say to you this...STAY RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE!

....... .. .-_l_...........

This entire thread has been difficult to gather accurate information from.

Simple question, I fly the Q400 for a regional airline in the northwest and since I am being furloughed later this year, I am looking for a Q400 job anywhere in the world.

What can I expect working at Arik Air, do they have the Q400s yet?

Thanks in advance for a accurate and honest response.

Actually, Arik Air has a couple of Dash-8's. you could apply, apparently they have too many aircrafts parked on ground without pilots to fly them, you never know, Dash 8 could just be one of them. try them too, as second choice by the way, Aero is still no 1, and NO too, i am not an Aero pilot.

Ok I'll apply with them, although they fly Dash 300s, its still the same type rating though - but still they are different aircraft none the less.

Any info anyone could share about either of the companies would still be greatly appreciated.

Not quite

5 Q400's being delivered in 2008 and 2 more in 2009

This was a guess from two years ago.... only a total of two Dash-8-Q400's were delivered in 2009.

None in 2008

None so far in 2010

Yes, planes are painted up and ready to go, but not paid for.
