SAA First Officer Requirements
Hey Guys,
I see SAA have now got requirements for First Officers on their website and they are surprisingly low. Can anyone comment on this ? Or does anyone know how this came about ?

Asking a question about flying for SAA or anyone else in Africa indeed, should be perfectly normal and even expected on the AFRICA forum. If you read some of the other postings here, both older and more recent, it will become evident that there are a band of aviation cynics, wannabes and failures that lurk in this area and whom are bound to reply (probably after much consumption) in the childish, angry and moronic manner, done above.

Ok well guys !
So they have a requirement on their website. Its just a way of saying if you dont have those hours dont bother applying for a position.
Thank you all for the replies to the posting its nice to have such different views.
But I disagree in putting SAA down after all they are our national carrier. Yes they might be in some trouble and going through a hard time but hey if I was one of the lucky ones to be able to work for them I would. A good example is ROSSAIR what a great company and what a great bunch of people to work with, they went through some serious trouble but look at the employees they didnt take a duck ! It is those very people that make it work and that is something to be proud of.
A bit of positive attitude will make things so much better !

1)I wonder which fleet you would enter, "directly"? (unlike other web site advertisements in the UAE)
2)I wonder what the salary is? (not shown like UAE airlines on the website)
3)Would you have to pay tax? (unlike some desert airlines)
4)Would you have to wait more than 3 years for a command? (more than Emirates) Imagine sitting 12 -15 years to get a Command!
5)Do you get a cash gratuity at the end of say 4 years like airlines, in the Indian Ocean? or 7 years in the Arabian Emirates?
6)Do you get schooling paid for, or housing?
7) Is your family safe driving around and living within the borders of RSA, whilst you are out flying?
8) Is the Company profitable?
No need to wonder why so many pilots are leaving this airline.
I almost forgot to ask: Is this where you start your first day as an SAA employee? all those First offcer requirements mentioned: now we know why!!!

Cape Town - The whip has been cracked at South African Airways (SAA) where top management of the airline will be placed on a roster to perform voluntary counter duty with ordinary employees to help with passenger queries.
Oyama Mabandla, acting chief executive of SAA, announced that top management would be given duties during peak hours at big airports in an attempt to improve client service and to place top management "in touch with the frontlines".
Permanent programme
The programme will kick off at Johannesburg Airport on Thursday. Vice-president of communication at SAA, J.J. Tabane, said this would be a permanent programme to involve the seven vice-presidents and five executive vice-presidents as well as Mabandla. Top management will be on duty on busy days such as Thursdays and Saturdays in Johannesburg and on Sundays in Cape Town.
Tabane said they would mostly be working behind the counter where travellers book in, as well as in the business and first class lounges to handle urgent queries from passengers.
"We will be able to handle passengers\' problems immediately without someone first having to write a letter and a year going by before the problem is solved," Tabane said.
Nolwazi Qata, executive vice-president for human resources, would be drawing up the roster.
Management to lead by example
Mabandla said at the announcement of the programme that management should lead by example as far as client service was concerned.
This comes after the airline decided last week to introduce an internal incentive scheme for good client service.
A training programme in client service for all staff members and management will be launched soon and monitoring systems will be improved to ensure that there are fewer incidents of client dissatisfaction.
These steps came after Khaya Ngqula, appointed chief executive of SAA who will be taking up his new position on October 15, spoke to top management at the start of September and insisted that changes be made immediately.

SAA has a fine reputation in the industry as an airline who will look after their cockpit crew, and all new recruits are subjected to really good training.
So many yungsters want to be Board Commanders, and if they can start as First Officers with a good airline like SAA on lowish time,why not?
I can assure you that they will be trained well by Johnny, Scully & the other Chiefs, and in due course become good pilots.
If my son Alfred only wanted to listen to me.........
