Firstly GT, where do you get the time to put together such lengthy postings?
Don't really want to comment on Ryanair! It's difficult to question the methods of one of the worlds most successful airlines!!
I don't propose that you pay anyone any less. At the end of the day, if you pay peanuts you get monkeys!!! What you need to address is the productivity levels of your employees and your assets (aircraft).
I have mentioned before, Kulula averages around 40 mins per turn. If you really want to utilise your aircraft, you need to be looking at 20-25 mins per turn. This is achieved by a combination processes!!
1). Pre boarding Zones
2). No airbriges
3). Low cost trained handlers
Also a lot of these savings can be made by building a good relationship with your airports. By taking cost out of their business you take cost out of yours. It's a two way process in which both airport and carrier win!
I could go on but I don't have the same amount of spate time as you GT. At the end of the day, it's about creating efficient processes.
As for the growth of Kulula. They can't stand back and look at what they have achieved, they need to be able to build on that with more aircraft and new destinations (where ever they may be). At the end of the day Comair are the competition, they should be aiming to displace both them and SAA as the number one carrier on every route.
Do you think they can do that under Comair? I don't think so!

Hi,
On the Kulula website you can only pay "online" by a South African credit card .
BAe 146-100
I have to say its frustrating trying to book stuff in SA using a British credit card - my guess is that's something to do with either foreign exchange regulations or trying to charge johnny foreigner more money.

Firstly if there's any Comair drivers reading this I'm sure we'd all be grateful for your comments as we've taken to running Comair on this thread.
THH:
Firstly I don't spend much time writing my posts - I am however spending most of my day driving a desk at present much to my frustration.
As for your 20-25 minute turn arounds I'll speak to a few of mates flying both in the UK and SA and see if that's viable. Its not so much of a Comair issue more of an issue for ACSA.
In some cases Airbridges can make for faster turns and in others not - according to one post on pprune there's now the crazy situation at Cape Town where a/c are being towed around the apron so the airbridges can be utilised.
It appears that the use of airbridges at Jo'burg in the new domestic terminal has made for a quicker turn around time so I'm not going to make any assumptions without looking at the details.
Anyway unless we can get some facts from a comair driver or two I think we should call this quits. Next thing THH will be trying to convince me that Arsenal are worthy of a fair play award

Maybe not the fair play award, but they should get something for hounding Ruud van Nistelrooy from the pitch.
There can't be many footie fans around the world who didn't enjoy that!!!!
As for the airbridges. If you board using both doors you don't end up with the situation where the first pax gets on, takes a seat in row 3 and takes 5 minutes to sit down, thus stopping anyone else boarding. Half the pax board use the rear door.

ZS-SIP is the only remaining white South African!. No, it is used as stand-by on both BA and Kulula. As for commenting on how BA or Kulula should be run- it is best left in the hands of professionals with fifty odd years of experience in the airline bussiness IN SOUTH AFRICA. In any case we as drivers don't care about money, we ....just......want ..........to..............fly!

Is that 50 years of experience of how not to run an airline. It doesn't matter what counrty you're in. Unemployment means you no longer have a job, and net loss means you're losing money! .

It is indeed used on the PLZ route where it is reconfigured to serve both Kulula and BA on the same day. I am impressed with your knowledge of our route structure!

Comair made a operating profit, due to the strong rand the 737-400's were written down in the books, hence the nett balance sheet loss. They still paid a dividend to shareholders!
There is a demand on all routes for premium and low cost product (tickets), same as people drive expensive and cheap cars on the same roads.
Wanna buy shares? the share price has doubled in the last 3 months.

There are many peeps in this forum that believe operating profit means diddly-squat!
I personally believe it shows the health of the flight operation departments. Well Done!

This article in the news today.
Just want to know if this is the same comair as being mentioned on this forum.
Comair president resigns after fiasco
Comair president Randy Rademacher resigned after the airline's
American flights were cancelled during the festive season due to
its computer system crashing. About 1 100 flights had to be
called off, leaving thousands of people stranded.

Jaco, interesting to note that Comair (US) is the "SAX" of Delta Airlines who used to be SAA's big mate on the US routes not so long ago.

Enough of the "if the shoe fits wear it' nonsense. It means nothing! I have many shoes, they all fit, yet I don't wear all of them.
And company performance and bottom line don't always go hand in hand.
A company can perform well and still lose money.
