Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7
I imaging for most medium sized helicopters with limited panel real estate the 7 inch moving map display is the best fit. I use Sky-map.de on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and am quite happy with it. Also have used a Dell Streak5 with a nice bright display. Sky Map sells moving maps for Europe and North America with a weather overlay, approach plates that pop up and so on. However, since I currently operate in PNG the main reason I stuck with them has been that you can scan and geo reference your own maps, including approach plates and even create your own airspace. To import your own way-points requires a bit of a converter but overall I am very happy with the program as it is suited for people that fly in places that the main stream software and GPS manuf./providers do not cater to. Nice thing is that this program is cross platform compatible Windows tablet, Android and Ipad. The developer is very responsive and helpful.

Ipad As Kneeboard
Hello guys
I'm after a spread of opinions here, as a recent convert to Sky Demon for aiding VFR nav, I am considering using an ipad in the cockpit on my knee - it's a full size ipad, to be used in the R22/44 whilst hour building in the open FIR.
Any experiences out there good/bad? Of course I will carry paper charts should my ipad fail etc (before I get mobbed)

iPad is too large for a knee mount. Mini is ok, but try get a mount where it tilts toward you for a better viewing angle. Or just get a Ram slider and bolt it on somewhere. Viewing surface of the Mini is about half what a standard paper approach plate does, but it is backlit, and zoomable, which kind of makes up for it. Sort of. Best would be display on one of your full size MFD, with own position on the approach plate. Umm, maybe not on the R22/R44. I wouldn't bother with paper. Been there done that on the R22, not enough hands.
Hi,
malabo is right - a normal iPad is good for a copilot but to big for PIC
I adapted...

I use a full size I-pad in the Zagg cover with keyboard. It wedges perfectly on the dash of a Jet-Ranger, Long Ranger, Huey and an Astar..... Works great, you can also then open up the camera function and take pictures and video with out having to hold a camera.
I took this video with it in the position shown:

Hi Gordy,
would shake to pieces in the the helicopter I fly mostly....
Spending too much time H.O.G.E. - with a little bit of wind in the area of translational lift......

I have been using one and the same strap for years now; I could adjust it from iPad2 to iPad4, and it still gives me undiminished service. I found no need to buy a new accessory every time I changed the iPad model. Viewing angle can be adjusted, giving its flexible nature, by packing out the side that you wish to be lifted - this could well be a 28V radial fan that keeps the iPad cool and prevents it from switching off in the most inopportune moments.

Mygoflight Dual Micro 28V USB charger
Yes, it does. While it works. Mine died after a few weeks of use. Luckily, it just died, no damage to aircraft systems or connected devices. Others have reported (on Amazon) that a failed Mygoflight Dual Micro 28V USB charger had passed thru unregulated 28V ship voltage to the iPad and iPhone connected, and had fried both beyond repair.

iPad Air 2
I use an iPad Air 2 bubble-mounted with a standard suction type mount. I find the bigger screen really helpful and like md600 driver find the weather update on Runway HD really useful. The Air is much lighter than the standard iPad so other than on startup doesn't vbrate too much.
It is full of strong magnets though so don't mount it to close too the compass!
I also carry a cigarette lighter charger, which works fine and means battery life is not an issue. I also use my iPhone 6S (the small one) as a backup GPS again running Runway HD, which is a bit small but fine as a backup.
I won't fly without them these days.

Has anyone found a decent place to put an iPad Mini in an AW109? Not a lot of free real estate on the dash, and the visibility already fairly limited, so dont really want to suction it to the windows..
Try putting it on your upper thigh. I am using the MyClip knee strap. This products doesn't add bulk to the iPad.
