Hotel manager Anton Phillips, 44, said: "It came in very low and then caught fire on landing.
Seriously, though - glad all escaped, notwithstanding missing eyebrows

as soon as they got into the hotel ordered a bottle of whisky from the bar."
Would that represent a 'hip flask defence'?

"He said the landing was normal, but then the aircraft flipped forward and the rotor blades hit the ground, causing the machine to break up"
Considering the height of the 44's mast, it must have been a hell of a "flip forward" to get the blades to hit the ground.

sounds interesting, landed then suddenly flipped forward?
possible situation landed nose upslope started to slide on the skids backwards.still light on the skids and then decided to stuff the nose forward to compensate.
Is that more of a probable cause, also R44 different weight balance with fuel and fattys on board
A 10 hr machine the horror !!

As far as I am aware the landing area is level grass. My guess is that it drifted backwards and caught the rear of the skids, tipped nose up and the pilot reacted with far too much forward cyclic, helicopter pitched forward under dynamic rollover in the forward plane.
