Hi-viz yellow to be banned
Brought a smile to my face....story from BBC News (and reminds me of the days when Camel sponsored motor racing - bright yellow outifits quickly turned black with insects at Silverstone. And as for Jonathan Palmer's yellow B206....) :
Lollipop men and women in Somerset are to swap their bright yellow jackets for orange uniforms because they are being plagued by bugs.
Patrols have complained that tiny black insects are attracted to the traditional high visibility clothing.
Bath and North East Somerset Council has ordered orange uniforms to trial over the summer.
Diana Barkes, school crossing patrol co-ordinator, said: "The bugs have been a real nuisance to our patrols."
A number of school crossing patrols are to test the new uniforms over the next few weeks.
Ms Barkes said: "The bugs have flown into their eyes and mouths as well as getting up their noses and caught up in their hair.
"Drivers should be warned that school crossing patrols wearing orange coats carry exactly the same powers as those in yellow ones."

Once at Liverpool airport I was spotted not wearing my hi-viz waistcoat as I stood next to the helicopter and between the helicopter and the bowser by a vigilant apron supervisor some 400 metres away. A ramp controller was sent across to repremand me. I argued that if the supervisor in his office could see me at 400 metres then I was visible enough.
It is my belief that the wearing of these hi-viz jackets is getting out of hand, and soon all pedestrians will be required to wear them at any time when adjacent to road traffic.
Yes they are an aid but eventually the eyes will cancel the awareness effect of these and flashing lights will be the next craze.
The traffic police in Japan have light flashing waist and shoulder straps and are excellent warning devices.
The attraction of bugs to yellow in as old as history itself. Mother nature thought of this millions of years ago to enhance the reproduction process. So watch out all female wearers of the hi-viz clothing.
Would you believe that there is a hi-viz blue which is highly fashionable and doesn't attract bugs and is hi-viz.

A little while ago we had a dispatcher run over. He was wearing full hi-viz and was standing in a back-of-stand road to stop the traffic so an aircraft could push back. The driver of the vehicle said 'sorry, didn't see you standing there'.
You just can't help some people. Fortunately he was sticking to the speed limit...

As I was saying, eventually the safety aspect of the hi-viz jackets will be eroded.
This is only the health and safety executive covering it's back and generally eludes from the insurance companys. Reduced premiums etc.
Therefore hi-viz yellow helicopters mandatory festooned in white stobe lights squarking mode 'C'. Gotabe safer!
