Daedalus Airfield - Lee On Solent, EGHF

Visited the above today for the first time and just wanted to say what a great little airfield it is. Fantastic approach up the Solent and finals over the sea onto a beautiful runway. The guys in the tower super friendly, a short walk from the tower over the road onto the beach for coffee and rock cakes at The Shack, overlooking the Solent across to IOW.

Give it a go, you won't regret it :0)

Was planning to follow your advice and go there this morning - only to wake up to 5000DZ OVC008. However I'm hoping to go later this week.

Do you know the Shack opening times? Worried they'll close for the winter...

Tried to get there on Sunday but was beaten by the weather - sounds like we must give this another crack when we can!

Managed to get there on Friday - and let me say, they were a great bunch of lads...

Seriously, nice airfield, friendly reception, professional A/G operation (no wannabe ATC types). Only minor gripe is that at £15 I would have liked a cafe to go to - but the Shack tell me they are open all year and you're right about the rock cakes, though I'm not a fan of instant coffee. But I'll be back, definitely. And although the joining instructions on the website look a bit intimidating, the disused railway line you need to find to avoid Fleetlands couldn't be easier to spot.

Agreed it's a great, welcoming place including the trusting fuel man who gives you an invoice and asks you to pay online when you get home:

One word of warning though, fuel is nothing to do with ATC so mentioning it ahead on yer PPR form doesn't always bring results:

I was directed by tower when I paid my fee last month to taxy over to fuel bowser's base: the tanker was a minute red blob in the far distance on the other side or the airfield.

When I explained the faff of starting a hot fuel injected engine, they relented and called the bowser over: This all took about an hour as he has to follow the peri track and cross the active runway twice, giving way to circuit training traffic.

This prevented me from a full stroll along the beach to an apparently very nice cafe in the village.

But the Shack bacon and egg bap was pretty good....

I'll deffo be going again.

Visited on Sunday and endorse all that others have said before - a friendly welcoming place but be cautious that the grass can be soft if you have to start a second line of parked aircraft and its hard to pull a Grob 109B when its sunk into the soft grass! Also some pilots don't seem to consider that a 109B has the same wingspan as a Mosquito!

Would recommend the airfield and the egg & bacon bap in the Shack!
