Serious Ryanair Rival
Financier Dermot Desmond is said to be in advanced discussions to set up a low-cost airline to challenge Ryanair.
He is reported to be in talks with several Northern Ireland businessmen with regard to setting up the airline, which would challenge Ryanair on routes between Ireland and Continental Europe, according to a report in the Irish Independent.
Desmond is expected to emerge with 30pc of the company.
In return, Desmond will put up much of the E30-E40m in start-up capital which the new airline will require.
David Keys, the Northern Ireland property developer behind the planned venture, will also put up a substantial amount of the start-up equity and will retain 51pc of the company.
The remaining 19pc will be split between a number of small investors and senior employees.
The new airline is expected to be launched in November and will begin flying in June of next year.
it will be interesting to see if this new Airline goes Boeing or Airbus and if its Boeing there may be a mass exodus and Ryanair Management will wonder Way ??. Hopefully Desair comes to fruition and gives MOL a run for his money.

Desmond's new airline is set to challenge Ryanair
Northern investment in €40m ventureFlights expected to take off by June
FINANCIER Dermot Desmond is in advanced discussions with a group of Northern Irish businessmen planning to establish a low-cost airline to challenge Ryanair on routes between Ireland and Continental Europe.
Mr Desmond is expected to emerge with 30pc of the company, the name of which is a closely-guarded secret.
In return, Mr Desmond will put up much of the €30-€40m in start-up capital which the new airline will require.
It will operate on routes from Dublin, Shannon and Belfast, mainly to Spain and Portugal.
It also plans to fly to Poland and at least one other Eastern European destination. According to senior aviation figures, Mr Keys is also in discussion with a number of regional French airports.
Although operating from Ryanair's home territory and flying to many of the same countries, it is understood that the new airline will not fly to any of the airports currently serviced by Ryanair. Industry sources said the new airline has already placed an order for two Airbus A320s, which carry 180 passengers, and has an option on a further three.
The new airline will be based in Belfast but will also have offices in the Republic.
Industry sources said that financial guarantees on aircraft being leased by the new airline will make up much of the start-up costs.
Mr Desmond will not be looking for an immediate return on his money.
Start-up airlines typically take between two and three years to break even.
Some start-up low-cost airlines have attempted to circumvent the normal regulations by contracting the actual flying to an established non-competing airline.
However, it is understood that Mr Keys' and Mr Desmond's proposed new airline has already applied for an Air Operators Certificate from both Irish and British regulators.

I'm not sure an unlaunched airline could count as a 'serious" rival to FR. Come back when the fleet count is bigger than EI - say 25 NBs.
Does Desmond still have a stake in LCY? I wonder will he be looking at feeding it some traffic in the medium term which would imply Airbus (318s) as a possible fleet supplier - all very speculative though.

Mr Desmond owns London City Airport and is one of the key figures in creating the facilities in the east end of London for the Olympics.
He owns a large proportion of Celtic and quite a few quality race horses. The guy is worth a fortune!

I have been wracking my brains to see if I can think of some destinations not already covered from BFS. (I am ignoring the harbour and am using BFS as a generic term).
The only area not covered which imho could support some sort of input would be the Baltic States. There is a sizeable labour force from this area employed by various food processing concerns in NI and the people travel via DUB (based on my watching DUB inbounds every night) there is no direct option.
I remain to be convinced.
Hello Max...sorry we got cut off the other evening(these words have been typed by an actor!!)

Come on old chaps, why does everybody have it in for MOL (ie Mr Ryanair) - he might not be charm incarnate, but he is successfully putting bums on seats and therefore keeping you guys/gals in work.
Maybe I'll send him my CV.....does anybody have a good word for him?

Paxing All Over The World
does anybody have a good word for him [MoL]
Incidentally, I try to avoid using his airline at all times.
I believe MOL is probably one the best airline CEO's of recent times, he is a great entrepreneur and excellent businessman. I wish I had achieved half as much as him in the time I ran an airline.
I say this as one that has spent time with him and has enjoyed his company and generosity.
Popularity never satisfied the shareholders.
To the new contenders, good luck and may you equal Ryanair's achievements.

from today's Irish Independent

Correction: Dermot Desmond
In our edition of 20 September 2005, we published an article under the headline 'Desmond's new airline is set to challenge Ryanair'. In this we incorrectly stated that Mr Desmond was in advanced discussions with a group of Northern Ireland investors to establish a low cost airline to challenge Ryanair, and that Mr Desmond was expected to emerge with 30pc of the new company. Mr Desmond does not have an airline nor is he in the process of establishing or investing in a new airline. We recognise that this article was untrue and hereby retract our comments on the matter. We greatly regret any distress caused to Mr Desmond as a result of this article, particularly in his capacity as owner of London City Airport. We are happy to correct our error and to apologise to Mr Desmond.

any update on this start-up? Is it going to happen or not. The guy behind it is meant to be David Keys- a wee man of 25 years from Belfast- I don't want to go down the road of questioning the integrity of this start-up because of his age (and try not to draw similarities between it and Martin Halstead/Alpha1)- but any news from anyone?

There was a report on ATI a few days ago, saying that this would be launched in January, "on a more modest scale than originally suggested." Apparently the original plan had called for 10 Airbuses but the current plan is for leased A320s to three mainland European destinations from Belfast (so I assume that's one or max two aircraft).
Interestingly it appears from the report that BBC NI have commissioned an "Airline"-type series following the progress of the airline's launch.
So much for the ATI report. Now a serious question from me: where on earth can you successfully fly to as a start-up from Belfast with A320s? Hahn? Bordeaux? Milan? (I'm reaching here...) And where is there an iota of sustainable competitive advantage, that'll allow you to defend your one- or two-aircraft airline against an easyJet or a FlyBE deciding that you've amused them enough and it's time to take you out?
