I got, GOT. Well, almost.

The Goo Goo search was plain enough. Windows/MS and numerous selling stuff departments. Then something. Then MS with all sorts of useful directions on which way to go. I pressed on the blue telephone number THAT TOOK ME TO 'SOMETHING.'

It's oldness, or dim eyes, or just plain dimness, but stuffed between those two MS paragraphs of info was a little ad. All about Windows support. I've been careful for years, why the b@@dy blue blazes would I fall for what is obviously a planned layout?

The voice that answered was obviously Filipino - with English learned in Italy. It's a small world now, so I pressed on. He, I think it was a he, said could I see a chat box on my screen. Yep, it had popped up. He obviously had my phone number - and so do MS. Anyway, I went over to Jasmine and chatted.

I explained that I couldn't get an ISO file of W7 downloaded for the purpose of putting it on a new SSD. She asked for my key. She said it was wrong. I turned the machine upside down and she was right. I'd transposed a 2 with a Z. Then she said it was okay. So she seemed to know her stuff. I let her romp around inside what is a machine I don't know what to do with, so not the biggest of deals. I hasten to add, I would not have let this happen with my PC. But then she said my disc had all sorts of problems and showed me masses of errors and warnings. She wanted to put them right.

I replied What's the point in putting right a disc I'm about to throw away? I even said I was totally at a loss as to her need to mend my disc before putting in the SSD. That conversation went around and around, and curious that she might make some vast improvement to my HD, I said okay.

Now, masses of time had gone by with her fishing about in my HD. My neat little warning lights of disc activity didn't show much. They stay on top of everything. If she was pulling data, it didn't seem much.

Anyway, then came the not too great surprise. Two levels of repair. One 50 quid and one ninety. I said, Now I understand, and crashed out with the power button.

Now I don't know if she was relying on making money by the charge, or if she was pulling my data. I suppose I have to assume the worst, despite it not being my main computer.

No, I can't believe I did that either. But it's done. What's the odds on stealing my data do you think?d And what are the odds of finding there are now a mass of faults?

Oh Rivets, you of all people letting a third party loose on your kit. I agree, assume the worst.

Time, perhaps, for a new hobby? Fishing is very relaxing I'm told.

I think weaving baskets is about the mark. But this is the picture. Oooo, fix it, and and 800 number, how kind.

What I'm really perplexed about is their ability to pop up with their chat box so easily. Also, 'Jemima' did know when the key I'd given was wrong. I can only assume they have access to a lot of records.

I don't think GooGoo should allow this kind of intertwining of ads. Everything but the actual url seemed part of a MS mass post. But here's the thing: these people are liars. At one stage she ticked me off for not cleaning up my registry at least once a month. Then, just before the sales pitch, she said working on the registry files had to be done by a very skilled person. The very fact she consistently argued that my fully working machine had to be fixed before I could download the ISO file is plainly a lie.

Can one complain to GooGoo?

I sympathise, I was having trouble accessing my Outlook e-mail programme, and GooGoo'd, which eventually led me to a NZ freefone 0800 number to call M'soft support in NZ.

I ONLY passed my phone number for them to call back, and the phone is not listed in my name, only Mrs Ex's which is a different name to mine, but guess what, the call-back came promptly and the so called NZ operative, who sounded dark skinned and based in a cave in Outer Mongolia immediately addressed me by my Christian name ! Frightening.

Also ... after trying unsuccessfully to locate my problem the voice offered to send me an e-mail of instructions to follow, which he did without asking for me e-mail address, and the result was totally incomprehensible to me, so I took myself off to town and gave my laptop to The Man Wot Does, who fixed the problem in a trice and only charged me half an arm and leg for the privilege, and also refused to let me in to the secret so should the problem arise again I am no nearer fixing it myself.

M'soft then e-mailed me and asked for a survey of their performance - I told them, but since then I have received 3 more requests for participation in their Customer Service, please. I have responded to the last one with a question, Does Nobody Ever LISTEN ??

Was Life supposed to be this hard, it was certainly easier before computers ?

Well, I've had a strange day. At lunchtime I was the target of a soul that is bi-polar. After a few short moments of talk of computers, his brain fused, he became utterly transformed, uttered some F words and left the club. I am totally understanding of such behaviour but wonder what happens to the hundreds of trillions of neurons that suddenly cease to function with the same end goal.

Some time about midnight I got into the laptop and it started up seemingly okay. I made sure Kaspersky was up to date and for some reason went for a restart. A few messages saying don't turn of your computer etc., and then a start. Starting Windows was as far as it got.

I like to think the best of people, but I'm sure this first ever hic-up of this Vaio was not a coincidence. I crashed out of the thing with the power button.

Next start I let it do the diags on start up. It spent a long time trying to repair itself, and then asked me if I'd like to go back with a Restore. I said, out loud, Yes please!

It did some skilled internal footling and then worked. I ran a scan and then a Malwarebytes. The latter found 7 items. Goodness knows what they are.

THEN, O, god help me, Windows informs me "You signed up for Windows 10 it will load . . ."

The answer to that is - NO I F@#$%@ING DIDN'T.

I'm not happy.
