The Autair service from Luton operated into Leuchars. They carried out one proving flight into Riverside with a 748 but problems with the grass runway meant that they moved to Leuchars for the start of the service.

I agree with the points about the potential of seaplanes at Dundee, the sea is right beside the airport, what more could seaplanes want?!

Also agree that long term the runway could be extended, as long as it was not just for the sake of having a longer runway.

Not so sure however it is necessary or viable a new terminal would be. Even if Dundee had the level of services it should the terminal would probably be sufficient. If services did increase then the provision for emergency services would adjust accordingly and the apron would probably be increased to cope, as it was recently.

It is one for the great minds in the City Council to decide if yhe airport warrants a longer runway. Do they take the gamble and spend millions extending on the hope of getting new business ?

You could probably guarantee that a low cost airline would come in, but Ryanair etc are'nt renowned for there generosity to airports !!

Isn't Dundee a small town of continuous decreasing population where the main 'industry' is Social Services, poor students and Ninewells hosp - why would anybody invest ?.

Last time i looked it was a rapidly expanding city ? with healthy passenger numbers on its LCY-DND service and a busy private/leisure jet base.

The population of Dundee, in line with the whole of Scotland, is decreasing. This is clearly not something unique to the city. If this is a problem for Dundee to attract airlines then so it should be for every other Scottish airport, which doesn't seem to be the case.

No, the main 'industry' is not social services, no more than it is in any other significant city.

"Poor students" have in Dundee Uni (voted Scotlands top university) and Abertay, massive amounts of continued investment and improvements to enjoy. It creates jobs, benefits the whole city and the students it helps to attract bring significant amounts of money into the local economy.

Ninewells Hospital is a fine teaching hospital, one of the best in Scotland and the UK as a whole and again has a similar impact as the universities.

Loganair's problem is putting on a service at price that passengers can afford, or is competitve with other airlines, such as Eastern, Flybe, Easyjet and the rest. If Dundee was economical and viable they might well have done it, although they have never been very good at providing services that customers want.

Dundee's runway has already been extended once.

I had a discussion with the ATC controller about the possibility of 737s using DND,and was told that it isn't just a length problem,but lateral as well. Apparently,under current regulations,the runway is too close to the airfield boundaries on either side to permit that size of aircraft.

Does anybody remember the DND--GLA service flown by the Heron G-ANNO? I think it was McDonald Aviation? No really!

Also,not many know that the airport fire service has a rescue BOAT (and it has been used in a real emergency)

I think the rescue boat at Dundee is actually a hovercraft because when the tide is out in the Tay there are large sandbanks which would stop a boat getting to an a/c in the water further out.

More of a hovercraft than a boat is it not?

IIRC the time it was called upon it had to make two trips to rescue 3 people?

Latest titbit in the local paper. While the local council's commitment is highly commendable, I wonder if it is in the airports best interests to have an independant operator for the airport?

Evening Shed

Sorry to read of the financial difficulties.

Maybe HIAL would be a good bet,would you be happy with them taking over the running of DND.Or a private operator-would anyone come in to buy the airport?Certainly enough exec trade.

Is there anywhere else around the Dundee area(Leuchars,Glenrothes etc nothwithstanding)that a new airport could be built?

I'm sure Dundee would rather keep its own airport than share with Fife!

Hear that they are losing a number of captains and quite a few first officers over the next few months, with more pending resignations to come before the end of the year.

Loganair BA Franchise

Anyone comment on when the BA franchise agreement is up? I can't see much point in renewal as there is no BA (or any really!) competition to fear and it would be nice to see Loganair come out from hiding behind the Speedbird. BA just don't do this stuff anymore.
