Flybe signs historic franchise deal with Loganair
14 January 2008
Flybe is today announcing a landmark franchise Agreement signed with Loganair, the Scottish regional airline, that will see it take to the skies in Flybe colours on 26th October 2008 at the start of the IATA 2008 Winter Season. As a result of the Agreement - that becomes effective once Loganair’s current Agreement operating as a British Airways franchisee ends on 25th October - 3.2 million seats for flights with Flybe flight numbers will go on sale in June 2008.
The Agreement with Loganair – the first of its kind ever for a low cost carrier - is in line with Flybe’s innovative philosophy and strategy of continuing to build a market-leading position as Europe's largest regional airline following last year’s acquisition of BA Connect. It is also further evidence of the airline’s commitment to building a significant presence in the Scottish market and to expanding its route network there, extending Flybe’s low fare model throughout the UK - including the Highlands and Islands - which have not previously benefited from low cost airlines.
`Flybe Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Jim French says: “This landmark agreement, the first time a low cost carrier has entered into such a franchise arrangement, is an exciting development in the evolution of the low cost model and one which Flybe sees as a valid strategic option for the future.”
In further comment, Loganair’s Chairman Scott Grier says: “This is an exciting time for everyone at Loganair and a significant step for the company. The move to become a franchise partner with Flybe provides certainty and removes speculation about the future of the company. We continue to be committed to operating throughout the Highlands and Islands and this will benefit our customers with a greater choice of connections to UK and European destinations.”
Mr French adds: “This is a win-win for both airlines. For Flybe, we will see our presence in the key Scottish market greatly enhanced and will benefit from increased passenger traffic into our existing network. For Loganair, the alliance is a major opportunity to bring the recognised brand of Europe’s largest regional airline and the benefits of the low cost model to over half a million passengers.”

Well Flybe are true to their word. They said they would dominate the Domestic market by 2010 and it looks like there well on their way. I think it will be bye bye Ryanair and bye bye easy and bye bye every other Airline from the domestic market.

Loganair Orkney Inter-island service
Loganair seem to be a bit coy about their Orkney Inter-island service. It isn't even mentioned on their home page and the timetables are hidden away at the bottom of the "reservations" web page.

Any expansion plans in the offing for loganair, either in their own right or in conjunction with flybe?
More Saab 340s on the cards or a different aircraft type? Could they take on any ex-flybe Dash 8-Q400s as they come off lease? Or even look to 175s?

Nah, they'd all pile off the end of the runway at Kirkwall!
Seriously though, without any great insider knowledge, now isn't the time. The Saabs will need to be replaced at some point but not in the near future.

Loganair Expansion Plans
Just read the previous posts mentioning plans of expansion and wanted to know if there are any plans to reinstate the CWL - ABZ service that was lost at the beginning of the year.
Think it was a great loss to both Aberdeen and Cardiff and surprised because I had heard the loads were good. Would be great to get up to Aberdeen with a direct service without having to fly to GLA or EDI and then getting a 2/3 hour train.
What do the Loganair PPRuNe readers think?

Thanks for replying Wellington Bomber
Have done research in the past to fly Eastern but the cost and time taken during transfer at NCL does not make it ideal. Looking to fly up to ABZ at the end of Oct and the cost of Eastern would be £325. At this price would be more cost effective flying with Baby or Flybe. Loganair used to be a flat £150 return.
If Eastern could drop the prices it would be great, or if they could take on the CWL - ABZ route that would be alot better. I am a bit surprised Flybe haven't taken it on with one of there DH8D considering the success of both the GLA and EDi routes out of CWL.

Cardiff - Aberdeen
Did seem strange that the airline were reporting loads ahead of expectations not long after starting, the next thing is the route being dropped again. Perhaps the yield just wasn't there.
Given ABZ has had something like 27mths of consecutive drops in passenger numbers, it's maybe not so surprising.

Loganair / Flybe - Benbecula
Anyone know what the increase in activity at Benbecula is all about? FLights to Inverness and Aberdeen (both via SYY) yesterday and one to Glasgow all with LOG flight numbers not scheduled passanger services with BE flight codes. Assuming Inv via Syy was just normal mail freight but what were the rest?

Loganair Website covers off the increased serviced.
They have won the long-term operator of the inter-island service between Stornoway and Benbecula taking over from Highland Airways.
