AN-2 in active Service in Africa

I have an AN-2 sitting in Accra, Ghana, and I'm looking for other AN-" owners, companies in Africa, operating this type of plane.

An2 Active in DRC

Air Kasai in the DRC have several An2's flying in the DRC....they are based in Tshikapa in the Kasai region and fly passengers and cargo to the small bush strips in the surrounding area. They have been using them for more than 15 years from memory and don't look like stopping any time soon....

Avgas in DRC.....

There is Avgas still in DRC but it comes in drums and costs an arm and a leg if your lucky. Air Kasai run their An2's on normal gasoline 90LL and it seems to work just fine for them.....

anything better than 87 octan will do, on our trip from Germany to Ghana, we had to buy AvGas where sold, but coming to Freetown, Monrovia and Accra we went to the petrol station, no difference at all!(oh yea it makes one in your pocket!)

Was it built in Poland ?, this makes a big difference to the EASA status and thus to many other CAAs.

Would like to know out of sheer curiosity.
Thanks

Some AN-2s were built in Ukraine and others in Poland. Poland is in the EU so aircraft built in Poland can be certificated or permitted under EASA regulations. Aircraft built in Ukraine are of Soviet origin and do not have the correct paper trail so they can only be registered in countries which accept Soviet aircraft certification.

All of the AN-2s flying in Europe were built in Poland.

Ghana mean time

Hi!

Is nice to see such a nice project as basing an AN-2 out of Takoradi (Am I correct?), what are you going to use it for?

There are several ways around with Ghana CAA and it all goes down to Ghana cedis... sad but true...
If what you need is written in a book, they have no other option than accept it, but they have no rush... so be wise and don't face the big heads... find a weaker link...

You can always use the other technique of knowing somebody who knows somebody... that will help you out to speed up things...

Hope it helps!

AN-2 Takoradi

Thanks for the supporting words, I'm in Ghana for some time, so I know some people who know some people, but I have also learned in those years that it allways pays to have a plan B. The plane will be for fun and privat use, you can follow this project on FB under Firefy Club Takoradi. Cheers

Off thread slightly, but is there a DC-3 in DRC with AN2 engines which would make it the equivalent of an LI-2. Might be a good idea for operators as the R1830 may be getting a bit rare and that engine is a licensed built Wright Cyclone and easier to source.

No there is no DC-3 in DRC with PZL Kalisz ASz61IR engines - the misconception comes from a static display by the same company Air Kasai outside the head office at Ndolo, Kinshasa's smaller and friendly airport.
They fitted AW2 four blade propellers to one of their DC-3's that was retired from service 20 years ago to make the aircraft look more complete.
Do not despair though you are not the first person or the last I expect to be "Fooled" by this attempt to preserve this amazing aircraft for future generations to admire!

Not sure which Ghana CAA you are talking about , maybe 10 years ago Cedis would get you approved, but not these days, from what I know, they are ok with Russain aircraft coming in on ad hoc charters, but not happy to have them based there in the country, plus they still have a ban on single engine aircraft for commercial operations based within Ghana. The DG is a very professional ex pilot, and a "brown envelope" will not get you approved there, if you make the criteria you will get approved , they are not the best CAA by far, but certainly making steps forward, they also have an ex FAA guy there, Jim, who is involved with improving standards and procedures. My hat goes off to the GCAA, they are improving

AN-3

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has seen any AN-3 aircraft operating in Africa, escpecially in South Sudan of recent.

It is the turbine version of the antonov 2. Very few made, but I understand one is doing the rounds in South Sudan.

Any info would appreciated, operator, what its doing etc.
