Your help requested for a dissertation on Airline pilot shortage

I’m conducting a study on Airline pilot shortage and attrition as a part of the dissertation requirement to complete my degree. I would sincerely appreciate if you could spare 5 minutes of your time to answer the attached questionnaire. Your responses would help me immensely to complete the study. No personal information will be collected on the questionnaire.

Responses are solicited from only 18+ and current Pilots.

Thank you very much in advance and happy landings!

I looked at your questions and the reason for the shortage isn't an option for an answer.

The reason the US is so short of pilots right now is because United, AA and Delta let thousands of pilots retire early. That's it.

Now these three are stripping other airlines bare and to to make up the gap of early retirements.

You're exploring a very complicated subject. It's a puzzle with many moving parts. Maybe too many.

I'm not in your search demographic so I can't take your survey but have one question: A shortage of what pilots ? I assume you'll look at categories other than airline pilots since other categories impact airline pilot supply. Climb150 has named one very big factor contributing to the current situation in the USA.

Here's one organizational opinion:

Pilot Supply - ALPA

Thank you both climb150 and banfanguy for your feedback.
I'm definitely including other categories as in the US the 1500 hour rule will require pilots to work outside an airline meet the minimum requirements.

But the scope of this research project is quite narrow as its a big puzzle indeed.

This is now a bit dated as it was pre-covid but this guy did a really deep dive on the pilot supply issue:

I will be interested to see the results of your study when complete. There really are a lot of pieces to this puzzle.
