FAA ATP FLIGHT Test

Hi boys and girls,

Can any of you suggest a good company and cost effective company that can conduct my ATP flight test in the States?

If you're coming to the US to fly for a regional don't worry about getting your license. If you goto Piedmont, Skywest or PSA they will switch your license over as part of your type ride. You just need your FAA class 1, letter of verification and TSA clearance.

PDT or PSA are probably the better options with regard to pay, flight benefits amongst other things

I'm not joining any company in the US. I need the FAA ATPL to get command at my current company elsewhere.

Hi,

I am in the same boat. Not a US citizen but have the FAA CPL, need to obtain the ATP in order to get my command on the current job (outside US). Unfortunately my company will not sponsor the required check on the Type rating that I hold at the moment. Need to find a flight school in US in order to adquire the ATP certificate.

The ATP flight test can be done by any examiner approved to do the test. It doesn't have to be with an FAA examiner. No instructor recommendation required (but strongly recommended. The US does some thing differently to ICAO). The catch is that the new requirements (from 2014 or so) require that you complete a prep. course before you can do the multi-engine ATP theory exam. Only after doing the prep. course, and multi-theory exam, can you do the flight test.

In addition to this you must also be approved by the TSA before you can start training. Only schools that hold a SEVIS approval can get you this approval.

In that case I think King schools offers a package for ATP-CTP then some prep flying and your ATP ride

I only require the ATP check ride. I have done the CTP and theory exam.
i'm looking for a flight school that can do the flight test at a reasonable price.

It's not the flight school that does the test it's a DPE. So just ring around then and find the cheapest rate you can for an aircraft do a few hours just to get comfortable in the airspace and the FAAisms and schedule the DPE.

Florida seems to have the cheapest rates in the country.

No. FAR 61.64 addresses using simulators for training and testing. In order to use a simulator for training or testing it has to part of an approved 141 or 142 program. Part 141 schools can use sims and training devices for training but I've never heard of one that can use a sim for checkrides. That is done under 142 with level C and D sims.

Can you do the ATP check ride in a B737 simulator without having an FAA type rating?
I wonder because it would be the easiest way for me since I hold an EASA ATP with a B737 type. If it's not possible what would be the most likely sim/ plane to to the check ride on?

If you do the checkride in a 737 sim the ride would be for both the ATP-ME and 737 type. Because the ride is being done in a sim it falls under part 142 and that requires an approved training program of both ground school and flight training. The 737 type is probably the most common type in the US and many training centers offer it. Because you have time in the aircraft you should qualify for a reduced training program.

The other option if you don't need the type on your FAA cert is to thrash around in a Baron or 310.

Something to keep in mind, is that in the FAA world the ATP practical exam (checkride) is the same as a type rating practical exam. They use the same practical test standards. In fact now if you had a type rating(s) on your commercial certificate, it automatically transfers over to a ATP type rating when you get your ATP, no matter what you took your ATP checkride in. So I would say that if you have an appropriate knowledge exam (written exam) that is current, then find an accelerated type rating course and get the ATP and a type rating at the same time. Kill 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak. The cost difference will be small.

Be careful, there are a couple of type rating schools in the Miami area that offer a sim based ATP course in a B737 sim, but you do not end up with the type rating. Some how they talked their FAA inspectors into approving the courses. IMHO it is nothing more than a way to get more money out of students.

Thats exactly what I thought too. however, after a bit of google research...

I can hire a small twin for $300 an hour. Having not flow one for a few years i presume i would need 3 or 4 hours practice to get back into the swing of things ($1200). The test goes for about 2 hours ($600). Not 100% sure about the test fee but lets say its about $800 bucks. Total $2600.

The cheapest type rating (A320/737) I am able to find at the moment is just under $9000.

That is a bit of a difference for me.

Is my calculation off?? are there cheaper ATP + Type ratings available?

You will also need to complete an ATP-CTP course prior to being able to take the written (assuming you don't already have the written completed). That in itself is about $6k +/- 1k plus lodging for about 4-5 days.

And don't forget the verification letter for your foreign license and TSA approval for both the ATP-CTP course and your type rating/ATP ride

ATP checkride on simulator

Hi, am told that there are some sim training facilities that have FAA approval to conduct training and checkride for the FAA ATP without a type rating. Does anyone know any of such training facility? Pls let me know. Am told they are mostly in Florida.
