UAL mid sixties

About fall of 1960 a group of co-pilots went to ORD to upgrade to left seat on the Caravelle. Some of those pilots went to LAX in the fall of 63 to fly 727's. But, I think that UA didn't take delivery of the 727 until Jan, 1964. So, what did those pilots do in the fall-winter of 63?
Bob.
